I guess I don't know for certain that it is discontinued. All I know is that Tower lists it as "quantities limited".

OK, I just sent Great Planes an email asking for verification or denial of the rumor. Let's see what their reply will be.

OK, here is the reply from Great Planes:

Dear Bruce,

Thank you for your recent e-mail. I do not show that this kit has
been
or will be discontinued soon. I just show that it is out of stock.

If you need further assistance, please contact us. You may contact
us
by email at partssupport@greatplanes.com, by phone at (217)
398-8970, or
by fax at (217) 398-7721. Thank you for your time.

Sincerely,

This is good news of course. Cease the panic modes. It just means that Tower inventory is presently low and also at the Mfg.

Past 100 posts! Yes, the kit not being discontinued is real good news

Everyone,

I'm looking at building the wings soon. My building board is only 48" and I see the wingspan is 57". GP doesn't make a building board bigger than 48". What can I use as an alternate building surface? I've seen alot of posts on this, but they are either really expensive (metal) or too big for my tool shed (shop). Any ideas?

Do you have room to lay down a hollow core door? You may be able to find a shorter than std one, meant for under stair storage room.

Section of counter top @ 5 ft long?

I built mine entirely on a 4 X 2 ceiling tile. Build the wings in halves, and join accordingly.

Hi Mods,

Your build seems to be progressing nicely. The wings build even quicker than the fuselage, so you have the hard parts finished. Regarding the landing gear. I was initially worried about them flexing too much, but the stock gear has I think saved me some more serious damage since it is quite forgiving on those less than perfect landings. I've even stalled and pancaked from about 4 feet up and the gear simply flexed and took the slam, with no damage to the fuse.
I've got a small website setup showing a bunch of the building steps for all my planes if your interested. My RC Website

I'm sure you will enjoy flying this one as much as it seems you are enjoying building it.

True, I really enjoy building this plane. This is the most challenging model I've done so far. Really getting tired of cookie cutter builds. I actually have to think in this one. Of course I have the advice of many builders who have been building more years than I have been alive so I'm gaining knowledge years ahead of my age.

Deadeye,

Thanks, I think I going to stick with the 4' building board I have for the wing assembly.

Finally finished with the fuse portion of the build. I did find that the aft fuse bottom corners required bending to match the fuse (this step wasn't in the manual). All that remains is to attach the control surfaces then, on to the wing(s)!

1. Shaped and installed the turtle deck as described in manual

2-5. Once I razor planed the aft corners, I found that the surface weren't level. Had to wet it down and bend it to shape. Held it in place with strapping tape. Followed by securing the entire corner with thick CA.

6 & 7. Razor planed and sanded to shape.

At this point I am still debating whether I should fill in the gaps with balsa lite now and sand or when the control surfaces are attached. Doing it after would expose the sheeted surfaces to quite a bit of dings moving the fuse around. Thoughts?

It will be much easier to fill and sand before the tail feathers are on.

Afterwards you can just give it a touch-up if needed

Well, according to UPS my Skybolt has made the trip from NV to IL. Now it just needs to make it up to MN. I can't wait!

Hey guys!
Some very nice stuff here. Im moving so slow on my SB that I would forget I have it except it sits on plans on a spare work bench. I spend hours on it for awhile and other maintaince and repairs etc took over. I hope this thread last a long time!!!!!!!!

Nice job all
Bill
