With all the discussions of whats good and bad about the AMA
I thought I pose a question in the form of a poll?

Guidlines Insurance is still required to fly at the clubs its just that the AMA would not provide it. AMA membership would therefore not be a requirement for membership in the club

Yes, I would still join the AMA WITHOUT the insurance. Since I joined the AMA in 1937 I belonged long before they had any insurance plan.

I do not trust the AMA insurance to protect my personal estate. If I had an accident with liability involved, I would not mess with the AMA. I carry $300,000 liability insurance on my home owners policy and another $3 million in an umbrella liability policy for a total of $3,300,000.. The umbrella insurance is inexpensive if you have a substantial amount of liability insurance on your home owners policy.

If you have an accident and there is liability involved, it is up to the AMA to determine if you were flying by their rules and safety code. If they decide you were not, and I think they could always find some rule you violated, you might very possibly be out of luck as far as their insurance covering the loss.

With my insurance it does not matter what I was doing. I am covered whatever I do and whenever I do it - period.

I am covered up to $3,300,000 no matter how the liability arose. The airplanes are a very small part of the reasons for a liability to arise.

I think a lot of the dissension within the AMA membership is centered around the insurance. They use it to keep everyone in line. If you don't have a membership in the AMA with their insurance you cannot fly at most R/C fields nor enter any AMA sponsored events.

What would be the point of joining them then?
They do serve a few other purposes, but I bet they would have less than 25% of the members they now have. Just my 2 cents.

Of course I would. Who joins "just for the insurance?"

The insurance is nice, but it is just supplemental. My home owners would take the brunt of any claim. I would still join the AMA because the AMA does support our hobby sport. Sure, we all have issues with the AMA (I personally wish the NATs traveled); however, when it comes down to it the AMA is needed. They offer flying site assistance, sanction events, lobby on our behalf, the list goes on.

I have never joined Specificly for Insurance, I have my primary coverage, but it dosen't hurt to have extra. I would support the AMA reguardless if anything to have a universal set of safety rules , competiton rules and records , a voice for our hobby, A place to advertise our events. And assist with promoting the hobby.

Yeah, I would. I kinda like having a uniform set of safety guidelines, a representative that keeps the FAA from regulating my flying, a representative that makes sure I have access to my little corner of the radio spectrum and a national body to manage competition rules and represent my interests for international competition.

The craft, hobby and sport of model aviation has achieved the present state of the art because there has been a national body promoting it, and that is a role that the AMA should never abandon even though doing so irritates a tiny, vocal minority.

Besides that, for $58 I get unlimited access to 25 years of back issues of Model Aviation. That, in and of itself is worth far more than I pay to be a member.

Yes indeed Art, Perhaps there is hope for life after the mindless procession of Extra-cap-hoi's.

Absolutely - positively YES! I have been a member of AMA since 1941, and that represents 61 consecutive years of enjoyment in this model airplane hobby which I dearly love. I design, build, and fly in my retirement years - and I thank the AMA for all it has done to enhance and promote this hobby during my lifetime. If it weren't for this great hobby that keeps my mind and fingers busy every day of the week, I'd probably be six feet under by now. Yes, I will continue to pay dues to the AMA - no matter what.

Ok, let me be one of the few who would NOT join if the insurance went away. I ask the simple question: what has the AMA done for the U$58 they are getting? Bring out the great magazine? Like I'm really interested in the latest developments of navy carrier profile scale indoor U control. A national flying site? Sure if I drive 24 hours to the place in the middle of nowhere. Lobbying efforts in DC? Haven't heard a thing. Getting the FCC to provide frequencies for RC? Oh yeah, secondary users, no rights and lots of commercial interference. Liaison with RC manufacturers? Does Futaba / JR even know the AMA exists?
So far all I get out of the AMA is insurance (yes secondary but my 100k homeowners liability isn't enough to pay somebodies hangnail they got while watching my heli fly) and all the writeups in the mag about how great the new offices in Muncie are and how they need more space for the 500th collectible freeflight model in their museum.
Sorry AMA, no insurance = no dues unless I actually get something else for my $$$.
PS - Don't even get me started about turbine helis and the AMA.
Fritz

Of course I'd join. Gee, I remember when the AMA helped with the narrow band issue. I remember at our site when some of the pagers used to shooot us down. Don't have that problem anymore. Who will fight the FCC and help us keep our channels available only to us. Yes I suppose I could go to DC and fight, but not for $ 58.00 a year.

We need a national organization that will stand up for us. But then again I suppose we don't need a fancy building to tell people we are a "real" organization. We could go to Washington and operate out of a cardboard box!!!

I wonder how many people complaining here have actually gone out of there way to see the headquarters building. It's not "over done" and fancy. I've said it before here and I'll say it again....if you don't like it, don't join. It's funny how people will spend money for something they don't like....gee.....donesn't make a whole lot of sense to me!!!!
