Yes, I would still join the AMA WITHOUT the insurance. Since I joined the AMA in 1937 I belonged long before they had any insurance plan. I do not trust the AMA insurance to protect my personal estate. If I had an accident with liability involved, I would not mess with the AMA. I carry $300,000 liability insurance on my home owners policy and another $3 million in an umbrella liability policy for a total of $3,300,000.. The umbrella insurance is inexpensive if you have a substantial amount of liability insurance on your home owners policy. If you have an accident and there is liability involved, it is up to the AMA to determine if you were flying by their rules and safety code. If they decide you were not, and I think they could always find some rule you violated, you might very possibly be out of luck as far as their insurance covering the loss. With my insurance it does not matter what I was doing. I am covered whatever I do and whenever I do it - period. I am covered up to $3,300,000 no matter how the liability arose. The airplanes are a very small part of the reasons for a liability to arise. I think a lot of the dissension within the AMA membership is centered around the insurance. They use it to keep everyone in line. If you don't have a membership in the AMA with their insurance you cannot fly at most R/C fields nor enter any AMA sponsored events.
