There seems to be a lot of references to planes flown in R/C combat circles running engines that don't necessarily Shut Off per rule 3.5 R/C Combat regs.

Does the Contest Director have the descretion to waive this rule, and still maintain AMA insurance coverage in good standing?

Of, the other way, Does AMA insurance coverage demand strict adherance to ALL the rules, especially the engine Shut Off rule.

Our hobby is precious to all of us. AMA insurance is a strong community selling point for many clubs in populated areas. We should not take this for granted.

So, what's the official AMA position on this?

Icarus, The AMA CD is going to need an AMA Rules deviation for what you just asked about,,, I think?

If its a club Combat thing with NO Real AMA CD at the helm,,, its a free for all and anything goes,,, but now your AMA coverage just went out the window in the event of a mishap because there was NO written Deviation Approval from AMA.

If I am wrong, I am sure someone out there will correct me

While I can't say the *official ama position* as that is tough to obtain, I can say the documented CD/Sanction procedures.

Rule Book events: CD can change any rule other than Safety Code rules that he so desires as long as those changes are pre-event announced, such as the "flyers' sent out advertising the event.
Non Rule Book events: CD can call all the shots, however he is expected to comply with whatever he advertised.

If you don't like what the CD does, then refer to Competition Regulations, General, Sanctioned Events, paragraph 18 -- 18.3.2.
