Hey guys, I need a little help...

See the pic below..

I thought I was going to be ok, but tonight when I went to test fit my mount to my firewall box it looks like it's not going to fit. No matter how I turn the mount I have at least one hole that's not going to fit on the box. The pic below I think is my best senario... in this orientation I can get four to fit cleanly but the fifth is off, if I turn it any other way I have two that are very close to the edge of the box but they don't have enough clearance for a blind nut. In the pic the mount is centered on the firewall as it's supposed to be even though it appears to be off center.

Any suggestions?

The DA fits easily on this bird because of the square mounting pattern. It didn't occur to me that the 5 hole radial could be a problem...

Camss69, I use 10-32 SHCS into blind nuts for all my installations except for the larger engines.
Now for your install. All you would have to do is drill another hole either to the right or left of the top hole that is there maybe 3/4 inch away.If it were me I would put a hole on both sides in case I ran into another small firewall. I would suggest that if you haven't already done so to pin the firewall. Taurus has a lot of torque and some of the ARF'S I have seen could use a little more
stiffening in that area.
Have fun and I hope this helps. It's what I would do.

Glenn, those are some great shots. I'm anxious to see the final result. I hope you will let me know when you intend to fly the "Stuka"

Thanks for your reply T-one... funny it didn't occur to me to drill new holes in the mount... hey that's why I posted right? What size holes are in the mount now?

In the pic you see the four screws on the box already, on the inside of the box in the two corners they have aluminum angle iron with 4 screws in the front and 2 on each side. Do you think that would be good enough for pinning the firewall? I took a pic to make sure.

Also I'm not real hardware savy what does SHCS mean?

Thanks for your help!!!

cammss69, Bill is talking about "socket head cap screws" hence, SHCS. Didnt mean to butt in but just wanted help. What plane is that you are mounting the TS-52 on? Also, how long before you thinks she'll be ready to fly? Would love to hear more experiences with the TS-52. Good Luck!!

Thanks tms,

It's the Hangar 9 Extra 260, I'm trying to have her ready to go by this weekend, we'll see though.

The weather out in cali has been bad the past month anyway so even if she is ready the weather probably won't be.

camss69; I too ran into the same problem..shorty ago', with my Stuka Build going on. But the advice is sound with Bill's idea'.. Yes, go ahead and drill one or two holes in the mount in line with the corner bolts. 8 or10/32'swould be more than enough. I ended up making a flat plate mount for my 4.2 to fit the Stuka firewall. I'll just save the radial mount for another day. Glenn

What is the diameter of the mount on the 52? I want to see how it would work on a Hangar 9 80" Cap 232.

camss69,

What about longitudinal spacing? I was under the impression that stand-offs for the radial mount were needed to get the drive washer out past the cowl opening.

Also, the aluminum angle plates inside the box are going to interfere with proper blind nut placement.

T-one, I seem to recall you telling me about a beam mount avaliable for the Taurus 52?

camss69, we're in the same boat; I was planning to put a Taurus 52 on my Extra 260, but was wondering about the mount fit.

Now, I dunno...

Yeah I'm kinda in a delima here, the two bottom holes will work fine (referencing the above pic) The two middle holes interfere with the aluminum angle plates, the holes need to be drilled right on the edge of the plates which is going to be difficult. The diameter on the mount is 4". I think for this plane (extra 260) it may have been better to go with the rail mount ts52 that bill mentioned when I called him. That would be a much cleaner easier installation. I really wanted to go with the taurus on this plane becuase of the low vibration of the engine, and the smallish size/light build of this plane.

I'm thinking I might drill the holes throught the angle plate, then just use a washer and locknut up against that plate. I could get more aluminum the same thickness to go under the unsupported side of the washer. (the bolt hole would be right on the edge of the existing plates) I was thinking I could use two smaller bolts up top (smaller being ok since there would be two) that way I could get the holes closer to the top of the box.

OR maybe I'll call Bill and see if he'd do a swap for a rail mounted version, being as mine has only been out of the box long enough to get the engine mount off.

Or if someone want's to make me a flat plate mount I'd gladly pay you, I don't have any equipment to make one myself. That would actually be the easiest soulution!

Steve I had a friend of mine make me a standoff ring out of plywood for the radial mount, I think it's 3/4" I can't remember I can send you a pic of you would like. He put some really thin fiberglass on it to hold it together and coated it with finishing epoxy. He did a really nice job on it.

I cant wait to hear about how the Extra 260 flies with the TS-52. I've seen it with a Brison 2.4, and even though the engine was beautiful, started easily and ran well, it just didnt have the pull that the pilot or spectators were hoping for. A TS-42 would probably have been a better choice.

As far as the mount, if you cant get by with drilling the extra holes in the radial mount or trade with Bill for a beam mount version, just take some measurements and maybe the engine to a steel fabrication shop and have the plate cut and drilled for you. It should be very inexpensive.

The TS-69 I just ordered has a 5" radial mount. I dont have the P-51 that its going in yet, and am wondering if i'll have the same issue. I may make a plate mount myself.

Good luck, keep us posted!!

Tim

camss69- I would do exactly as you described. I have had similar issues on other planes and I drilled through angle aluminum and used nuts.

To whom it may concern- I just looked at my H9 80" Cap 232 fuselage and a 4" bell mount would fit with room to spare. That's a good thing.

camss69, there are many options to you.
your best bet is to call me or pm me your phone number and I'll call you.Our main objective is to have a satisfied Taurus owner. In our opinion you have the best engine on the market so lets get it running and flying. If we are running engines we will not stop to answer a phone,(safety) thats what voice mail is for. So just leave a number and I guarantee we will solve the problem.

Fair enough

I am looking at the same problem to mount my TS52 on an Ultimate. All I plan to do is cut a piece of 1/4" ply big enough for the radial mount, bolt the engine to that and bolt the ply to the original firewall. You already have 4 bolts that you can use that hold the metal bracing on, what could be simplier. If your at all worried about the integrity of the whole thing epoxy the 1/4" ply to the firewall as well as bolt it, I might sandwich a piece of CF between the two, lots of alternatives.

Well I got everything mounted tonight. I spoke with Bill on the phone, and he gave me the rundown, very nice talking to you again Bill.

It came out pretty good. I went with two additional holes up top, they are pretty much as far towards the top as I had blind nut clearance. They are also 6-32 instead of 10-32 like the others, but there are two of them. I'll pick up some socket heads tomorrow for the top two. I'll put a washer and locknut on the one running through the angle aluminum.

I have lock washers, but should I put lock nuts on the back of them all also? I'm thinking I'm going to.

Steve, it's kind of a tight fit but it fits.

camss69. that install looks just fine.In my opinion what you did was the simplest and quickest solution. And speaking with you was my pleasure.
Anytime anyone has any question regarding a Taurus or for that matter any other 2 stroke gas engine I'm familar with, don't hesitate to call or email,I'll try to help you. Quadra's Zenoah etc.

camss69, yes it does look good.. I like the angle corner plates too. Nice and solid'. Have you
run your engine on a test mount yet? Just curious.. Drilling my flat plate mount for the 4.2 tomarrow. Wish I could use the radial mount ! Oh well. G. McIntosh

No I don't have a stand big enough to put it on, from what I understand gas engines there isn't much of a break in so I was figuring I would put it on the plane, run it a couple minutes with a highly experienced friend to help me tune it if necessary and I'd be good to go.

You shouldn't have to tune anything. the engine was tuned here with a 22X8 prop and 50:1 fuel mix.
No offense but the biggest mistake for modelers is to try and adjust a new engine that has already been tuned at the factory. At least every Taurus has been tuned before it leaves here.

Please run it on the ground to get the hang of starting it. It is set a little rich and will run just fine. If you have questions please call.

Field engine experts are dime a dozen, please be careful.

Hi Bill,

I'm not going to tune it, I'm going to fly it out of the box like you said, he's there to help me get it running the fist couple times as I have no gas experience. I'm going to start it just like you said to do over the phone. No worries, if we have problems which I don't anticipate we will, we'll give you a call before we go messing with stuff to much. I've known him 11 years, and he flies everything, lots of giant scale gas experience.

OK, didn't mean to sound excited. Just concerns me when I see questions about needle valve settings. I do have a concern regarding as I call them "field experts" after sixty years of observations. Particularly when a person makes an investment in a product and the field experts start making their suggestions.
I doubt you will have any problems. But one never knows.
In the meantime have fun, enjoy and fly safely. And send a picture to the website gallery so we can all see your plane.
