22nd November 2005. The build commences. It is will have a Wren Supersport which should be enough urge and I am going for the non scale Main UC. I am a Scotsman and the scale UC costs more than the kit.

Initial impressions are that it is a real builders kit. In fact more building than I had anticipated, but the mouldings are light and with the exception of the main hatch everything seems to fit.

And yes those are the wings not the elevator halves.

Hi J.

I built an Avonds F104G a few years ago. It took me 3 weeks to complet building (less painting). It's all goes together well, and I'm quite sure you will have plenty of power from you engine. I flew mine with a 12 lbs Simjet 1200. Good luck.

I built the Aeroloft version with panel lines. Builds very quickly and flies great. Keep a bright color scheme in mind as it is very hard to see in the air. Mine is now over 5years old and still going. Yours should fly fine with a super sport, mine started out with a Ram 750 and weighs 20.5 lbs. Yours should be much less and the Avonds glass work is much lighter.Get a gear door kit fromPA, easy to do and makes the airplane look much better. The airplane flies fast and will slow down to a crawl for landing, much more than you would think for an airplane without wings. You are going to love it!

The work is progressing slowly because I am measuring three times checking, agonising about fitting or cutting things in the wrong order before doing anything. One thing which I nearly got wrong even though it is highlighted in the build notes is making sure that the bulkheads and formers are a loose fit. Any force at all and the light glass mouldings distort very badly. I had a 12 mm bow in the main hatch on my first trial fit.

I've built one and painted a couple for friends. Flies great. The only modification I'd make is to the main gear mounts. They will break on a hard landing since they are ply and very long. I'd make them screw-in so you can chage them out at the field. As designed you have to cut the old ones out with a Dremel to change them. At least make a couple of spare sets for later.

Was this the scale gear or the Springair standard fitment?

The temptation to go to town on the cockpit was resisted. Although I did spend time in ToysRus looking for a suitable alien or possibly a tiger.

Got it altogether for taxi trials yesterday at RAF Cottesmore. Thanks to Jason who spotted my BOOBOO on swapped gas and fuel lines.

It has been a long build but it is a good kit, things fit, the accessories are good and Philip Avonds has been quick to respond to any queries I have had.

Here is my Avonds F-104

I built it over the course of 3 or 4 years lol, can't remember how long ago it was. It started out as a .91 DF for Dynamax. I-Nav "Mike" helped me finish it, I however still need to put the decals on and some black paint. Im flying it with a Simjet 1200/18 AES and it flys great! Good airframe, good turbine.
Thank you Mike!!!

Pics by my Wife Jill C. Canon Digital Rebel 400-100 IS zoom

Keep up the good work J. Duncker

Um Duke,
Could you possibly WAY shrink those pics down in size? I can't see them on my monitor and it makes you have to scroll the entire page left to right to see everything
Thanks

Maiden flight in primer 7th August at Long Marston. Empty weight 14.3 lbs [ 6.5 kg. ] CG on the button with the 1800 nimh RX pack in the nose. My idea of using a tube up the le for the aerial was shown to be a bad one when I did a range check. Whip aerial installed instead. Used the settings suggested in the manual including the flap>elevator mix.

All checks complete, I had run out of excuses and had to fly it. No problems except for a dutch roll on full flap if the speed was allowed to drop. The manual and other 104 flyers had warned of this so I was ready for it.

Despite knowing about the dutch roll problem I reduced the power at about 6 feet above ground and it was wobbling a little on touch down.

I lost the nose wheel on the landing roll out so that finished flying for the day.

Yippee, the missile with wings flys!

Thanks Mike for inviting me to your field.

Hi mate

I have one of those. Was originally built in 1999 and has been flying ever since. I have an original AMT Mercury 7 kg for power and it weighs 9.1 kgs (20.2 lbs) dry. It is painted in 'The-witch-and-broomstick' colour scheme. The contrast White/Yellow/Black with stars work very well.

Enjoy, it's a great jet.

Here is the colour scheme I am working on. It was flown at one of the tiger meets and I believe it was the last Starfighter flown by 21 squadron.
