ka0hyz -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (12/16/2006 5:32:50 PM)

Hi all
I been keeping up with this thread since it started and I orders and got one here saturday.
everything looks great but theres a bag of lasar cut ply ,its not the tank floor, its another bag, nothing in the manual telling about it or no one nows!Looks like a battey box maybe.
I love the Telemaster and this is my first ARF ive been building for years, since about the early 60s. The manual is worthless,is all about gas but hay,its simple..So I can see how someone just getting into the hobbie might run into..
So any thought here will be great.
Mines getting 4130/8 motor,Jeti70 Advance 3P opto battery will be the Dan true pack of 5s2p 8000mah lipoly..I cant wait to fly her..
Take care
thomas(ka0hyz)

The ply wood is for the servo tray.

ka0hyz -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (12/17/2006 4:00:01 AM)

Hi again
i found out its the new battery box that there putting in the ARF but nothing about it in manual but thats what it is,.,I also have the servo tray tank bottom too..
thanks for the help..I think I found a fairly simple way to mount the electric motor or my idea I should say.will let you know.
thanks
thomas

Hi Al.

A friend wants to sell his Transall C-160 in the box, and I am tempted to buy it, will it fly with two O.S. FP .19 engines? or will it be way underpowered, I would like it to fly scale.
Please let me know what you think, allso how does it fly?
Regards
Calixto

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (12/27/2006 10:08:35 PM)

Hi Calixto,

I can't tell you about the nitro motors, however, the 9X6 props need to turn 9,000 RPM in order to get his baby to fly nice. Some others are using 10 inch props, however, I found the 9X6 to be a good combination with electric. Yes, I know you are considering nitro, but, the prop size is limited by the distance from the fuse, so 10.5 is max, and they need to turn 8,000 to 9,000 RPM.

The plane flies good if you check the wing incidence, some planes were manufactured with negative wing incidence and were hard to fly. The CG point is 80MM back of the leading edge, disregard the what the manual says. The Transall looks good, but, lands on the fast side, it does not float.

Hope I helped.

Al

Calixto -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (12/27/2006 10:35:49 PM)

Thank you Al.

Just what I needed to know, I will buy it because I have two .19 engines and they turn a 9x6 prop at over 10.000 rpm so I should be fine.
Thanks again.
Calixto

Calixto:

Read this thread on the C-160. Be carefull reading all this crap will give you one big head ache. However, we all have had more than one Transall and there is alot to be learned. This plane is not forgiving if you loose a motor.

I linked you to the last page which gets off the subject, you might want to skip back several pages for more info.

Thank you Al.

Read a few pages of the thread and should help me a lot. I found out that if you install the engines on a twin with the right engine pointing to the right 7º and the left engine pointing out to the left 5º it will give you a much better chance to survive an engine failure on take off and also would make it much easier to fly on one engine.

onimac38 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (1/17/2007 6:05:51 AM)

i just brought home my senior last night and after 3 hrs trying to figure out how i was going to get the rear stabilizer into the fuselage ( im not impressed with the so called directions) i took it upon myself to cut open the rear and fit the parts. i wish id seen your thread first. directions said pre built so i figured it wasnt going to be a real time consuming project. i now see i was wrong again. the plane looks great and i hope its worth the trouble im having. i have a 71 glow engine i'm planning to run in it and im intending to use air brakes and flaps as well. i have a telemaster i bought used and its a tank, it has a solid 1/2 plywood fuselage and the only thing ribbed is the wing and rear stabilizer, everything else is solid. im running a magnum 47 and the plane flies great at 1/4 throttle. ive drove it in the ground a couple times and except for a few tear's in the wing covering and some broken rubber bands it is always ready to fly again. im hoping the senior will fly just as good, but till that time comes i'd gladly welcome any tips on putting this plane together.
thanks,
KINDA CONFUSSED

Go to the first page of the SENIOR TELEMASTER ARF thread, and you will find everything you need to know about problems encountered assembling the Telemaster arf. there are some pictures by Greg Covey explaining how to solve your problem.
Good luck.

KenS -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (1/18/2007 1:43:26 AM)

Hello,
I have been thinking of a Telemaster Senior for some time and finally ordered the ARF version. I would have prefered the kit, but at $149.00 for the ARF I couldn't pass it up. I ordered the ADVANCE PLUS 70 AMP OPTO AXI 4120/18 OUTRUNNER MOTOR and the ULTIMATE BEC. My plan was to use the 16 cell rc 2400 ni-cad packs I have made up. I have been thinking I may have made a mistake as I have 3 16 cell packs which would allow me to split one and have 2 24 cell packs. What does everyone think, should I use what I have, or return the 54120/18 & 70 amp opto and replace them with the 4130 & 77 amp opto setup? Thanks for any input, KenS

Any one know the top speed of Telemaster Airframe? I am trying to select a prop with fastest usable pitch for this plane.

Calixto -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (1/18/2007 2:14:08 PM)

I would not use anything more than a 15x6 at 9000 rpm on a Telemaster.

onimac38 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (1/21/2007 12:59:09 PM)

ok thank you,
i checked out some of the pics and they were indeed helpfull in a couple of areas. im hoping to have plane ready to fly next weekend if all goes well.
thanks for the reply

Hola David.

Calixto -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (4/2/2007 4:02:40 PM)

Hola David,

dgliderguy -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/17/2007 8:21:23 AM)

Thought you guys might like to see my mods to the Senior Telemaster ARF. It's going to be a glider tug, so I'm gonna drop my Magnum 1.20 Pro two-stroke engine in it, for plenty of go.

I made a removable wing, with a ply tongue off the wing root leading edge (like some other posts in this thread), and a nut retainer plate under the trailing edge. I also wanted a removable tail, so I can carry this thing along with my gliders to the various aerotow events inside the cartop carrier. To do this, I cut out the stab over-structure and glued it down to the stab top, with two dowels sticking out facing forward. Then I installed a stab mount platform on the fuselage aft end, with a nut retainer plate. Pics tell the story.

I know from experience that the Senior Telemaster has a "wobbly" tail, so in order to give it more torsional stiffness, I stripped the covering off the aft fuselage sides, and will sheet the aft section with 1/64th ply. This will also facilitate the mounting of the elevator and rudder servos in the tail. I will make servo wells in the side sheeting, and run short pushrods to the control surfaces. I can put up pics of the tail-mounted servos and sheeting when I get that far. To remove the tail, all I need to do is pull the two stab bolts, and unhook the clevises from the elevator and rudder horns, and unhook the steerable tailwheel pushrod. I've also enlarged the rudder area, for more yaw control.

The tow release mechanism will go on the trailing edge bulkhead-- just a simple "croquet hoop and pullwire" release. Then all I have to do is mount the engine on the hardwood rails, install the tank and rx/batt, and it's all done. Should be a fine tug for light-duty (3-meter to 4-meter gliders).

Don.

vmsguy -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/20/2007 8:16:33 PM)

OK...

I'm all but sold on buying this plane.

Why? I want a tail dragger trainer, and I have a 4130/20 at home still in the box, waiting for wings.

I have just a few questions for all of y'all that have flown this electric version.

1. What drivetrain (Prop, motor, ESC, and batts) have you settled on?

2. How well does it fly with this setup? By this I mean does it cruise and move well at 1/2 throttle? Or do you have be running wide open to get it go?

3. How have you set up the flaps / ailerons? Dedicated flaps with ailerons separate? Flaperons? Etc...? And how, if you can answer, has this influenced flight characteristics?

Thanks in advance,

Lyndon

MikeFreas -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/20/2007 8:58:58 PM)

For the setup I have on my bird I fly at less then half throttle. You can hardly tell the difference between gliding and WOT on this bird unless your tring to climb. I had flaperons programed for a while but had to use the extra channels for the camera mount. If it's dead calm then they help some but not enough. If your thinking about modifying the wing then you need big flaps. These aren't to help with lift but to slow the bird down as it wants to glide. A 10 mph wind is really fun to play in with this bird. With your motor I'd bet a STM would fly with an AUW of 15 lbs very easy. My bird weights in at 11. This is a perfect trainer and it's really fun gliding around in the thermals with the glider guys. I've flown for more then 45 min with most of that time motor off.....that is until the Sherif landed their heli at the field to shut us down. [>:]

JJeter1954 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/22/2007 9:16:45 PM)

I have a Sr. Telemaster and am wanting to convert to electric. I can find prices on everything but the Li-Po battery packs. 6000mah sounds like ut works very well but I don't know how much and where to get them. Any help would be greatly appreciated...Jerry

MikeFreas -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/22/2007 10:06:50 PM)

Jerry.

The best bang for the buck by far is TrueR/C's packs. Like I said in my e-mail above my 5S2P 8000 mah pack only cost 180 delivered to my door including a balance tab. Here is the site. Oh, they have several different ratted packs. The cheep one is the 10c version. Your not going to need any where near 80 amps with a STM though. My setup only pulls 60 at WOT.
