This should get you going for less then 100 bucks.

herm -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/23/2007 5:20:27 AM)

this is the motor I intend to use in my Sr:

https://www.unitedhobbies.com/UNITEDHOBBIES/store/uh_viewItem.asp?idProduct=4569

Mr Freas recommended the 7T version that will turn a smaller prop. I like the 8T version and a larger prop.

I have two of them, about equivalent to a glow 90 2strk, 120 4strk... I really dont need all that power but I already have the motors, will use a 10s1p A123 pack, also have several of those packs. I HIGHLY recommend this motor.

This motor will do up to 1200watts continously, and is just as powerful and efficient as an axi 4130-20, wich I also have.. perfect setup for the Sr should be an axi 4120 series at around 900watts, it is a shame Tower does not make one. In any case the Sr will ignore the extra few oz of the bigger motor.

JJeter1954 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/23/2007 12:31:12 PM)

Thank you both! I have just put my order in and hopefully by next week-end I will have this monster in the air! I am SO looking forward to seeing this Big Bird slowly rising and soaring like it should...Have a Great Day all...Jerry

herm -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/23/2007 1:23:06 PM)

UH orders usually take 3 weeks, they come by burro from China :)

JJeter1954 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/23/2007 3:45:09 PM)

I paid xtra for the 3-5 day shipping so hopefully ot will get here quick enough...lmao! Thanks again guys for all your help...Jerry

MikeFreas -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/23/2007 6:30:08 PM)

Good to see you placed your order to get your bird in the air. I know labor is cheep in China but UH is still turning a profit selling that motor for 39 bucks. Why then did my AXI cost me 120? I don't think my motor is THAT much better. I'm all for supporting local business but it cost me almost twice as much with my Jeti and AXI setup then it's going to cost your for the ESC,motor and battery!

Did you order your pack from TrueR/C? You really can't beat the price and the service is great.

JJeter1954 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/23/2007 7:35:44 PM)

I don't understand that either. $287.00 for the AXI Combo, mtr & ESC. And you fly yours a lot harder than I do I'm sure (new pilot) and it still works as well as the high dollar mtr. Oh by th' way, if anyone needs a TT .61 for a Telemaster I have a decent one, reasonable! I'm hoping by next week-end to have mine put together and trimming it back out...Jerry... no I didn't order that battery pack, I have 2 4000mah packs already made up so I'm going to trim it with what I have first and see whether to invest, yes invest, in 1 big pack or buy a bigger charger...lol...

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/23/2007 8:18:20 PM)

Since you are all excited about this Telemaster, follow this link to a video I took. I just strapped a small video camera ontop of the thing and let it go.

The sound you hear is the wind over the camera, the flybys are me trying to land the darn thing. It just doesn't want to land.

I modified mine by having bolt on wings, no elastics.

MikeFreas -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/23/2007 10:26:14 PM)

Hey Al!

Your link doesn't work but I'd like to see your video. One of my first can be seen here

http://www.rcuvideos.com/item/JRQFJ9W33PCT690C

You will be happy to know your gift is still flying and always gets comments at the field. I have buddy boxed several people interested in getting into RC.

For those who don't know Al gave me a NIB STM ARF after my kit STM had a wing failure back in April of 06

vmsguy -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/24/2007 12:13:31 AM)

I didn't have any problem with the link..

At least you didn't try to force the landing....

I would've been really bummed if the video ended with a smash into terra firma.

vmsguy -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/24/2007 4:37:25 PM)

Pretty cool Mike,

A couple times I could see the plane's shadow. That was neat.

It look like you have some kind of ability to actually move your camera. Yes?

That got me to thinking.. I wonder if Heli gyros could be somehow used to smooth the camera movements. Say you make a aileron or rudder tweek, that translates into a camera jerk. Maybe the gryos could "smooth" that movement out...? Just a thought, I have no idea how heli gyros work...

OH... yes, I did see the parachutist!!!!

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/25/2007 6:04:16 PM)

I hate to say this but the Telemaster is not the best plane out there of that size. I presently have a large size Cub tha has windows all over the place and looks like a real airplane, and flies really nice. Nobody ever asked to fly the Telemaster, but, everyone stands inline to fly the cub, and I let them. The camera can be mounted inside the cub, and a larger camera could be used.

Anyway, I thought about more in flight videos, however, unless there is a crash or something exiting happening, most people get bored watching. With the cub, I thought about getting inflight video of other RC planes, that would be neat, but, I need to improve my flying skills first.

Bottom line, the Telemaster with elastics holding the wing on, flies reasonable good, but, the 100" Cub is much better with the same electric power setup. My Senior Telemaster is now retired in the rafters of the garage, the Cub has taken it's place.

JJeter1954 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/26/2007 5:21:54 PM)

The only gripe I have about my STM is that it os a kit w/o collapsable wing, but i have a truck so the wing still sits down inside quite nicely. It has been changed over to bolt on so that's not a problem either. I have flown the Centennial Cub and both are sweet flying planes. It just happens that I am changing over the STM now so either one is a Great Flying plane. Mine was powered by a STT .61 so it was just a good slow flyer. We all have our favorites and the designs are pretty much the same so it's mostly what you are used to that keeps us going back for more...Jerry...btw Algutkin...any plans to get rid of your STM?...is it the new one or the solid wing?...

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/26/2007 6:22:32 PM)

I'd love to get rid of my STM, it comes with 4 wing halves, two are screw on, two are just the stock elastics. I did not glue the main wing together, both halves are attached with nylon screws. The plane is powered by an AXI 4130 or 4120 (I forgot) and 6S cheapo 8C lipos wired together in parallel.

The problem with selling anything like this is the boxing and shipping, it's a financial killer unless you are in the business.

Al

JJeter1954 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/26/2007 9:51:53 PM)

What do you think it would take to ship to texas? Let's talk...Jerry
Al, check your PM's

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/27/2007 3:30:54 PM)

I am interested in selling the Telemaster, however the actual shipping cost might be a deal breaker.

First, let me take the plane down, clean it up, post some pictures, measure it for shipping, and then I would be interested in talking to anyone that might want to buy it.

Give me some time to accomplish all this stuff as I still work, also we are going away for a long weekend. In addition I am presently finishing up two other projects that have build threads on the other major site, RCgroups, in the conversion forum , under the name of scalefan.

Bobhend -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/30/2007 3:27:05 AM)

I am a flight instructor and took a student up on his 6 Foot Telemaster Electro ARF tonight. According to the student , it was balanced correctly, but the CG point was was further back that any plane I had seen before, way aft of the spar. We got it back down OK but it took power and a huge amount of down elevator to fly it. Can anyone send me the manual for this plane ? The student went on vacation and I am dying to know how to make this plane fly correctly. Despite the problem I am VERY impressed with this aircraft. We usually fly nitro trainers. The Telemaster just floats. Flaps and crow programming would really be cool on this bird. thanks, BH

asm_ -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/30/2007 8:26:05 AM)

Since we have been discussing the Sr. Telemaster (8 foot) in this thread, I don't have the manual for the 6 foot Telemaster. However, if you think the CG is too aft, why can't you simply add weight to the nose until it fly to your liking? Manual's CG value is merely a starting point for most plane anyway. It is always fine tune during the first couple of flights. For trainier type model like Telemaster, power off dive test seems to work fine. Give that a try.

~asm

herm -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/30/2007 11:09:31 AM)

for the 72" Electro, CG is best right in the middle of the wing servos, I tried it at the spar and even further back and did not like it. Not dangerous or unstable either way just did not like the feel. I dont think there is a manual for this plane..

Power-off CG dive test in a TM is very weird, totally different from a normal plane.. that lifting stab is there for a reason and it definitely changes things.

Bobhend -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (6/30/2007 3:05:34 PM)

I have concluded that the manual that came with his plane must have been for a larger model Telemaster (such as the 8ft) and it evidently says "the CG is X inches" where X is way too far aft for the 6 ft electro. Center of the servos makes sense. Thanks, I will let you know how this turns out.

Power off dive test is for decalage evaluation, I will settle for level flight with a flat elevator.

JJeter1954 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (7/1/2007 11:06:40 AM)

Now I have 1 more dummy question, the motor maufacturer recommends a 15 x10 prop, is that a normal nitro prop, APC prop, Electric Prop and where do I find these props? I wish UH would say what kind it of props to use with that big b/l motor. Thanks for your help...Jerry

asm_ -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (7/2/2007 6:42:27 AM)

I would not count on UH's prop recommendation. Considering most of their motor spec. is largely approximated. Value such as IR and KV changes from batch to batch and they don't always update their web page with updated information.

That's why I always put the UH motor on the test bench to meausre their value before procee with the power setup design.

~Brian

JJeter1954 -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (7/2/2007 12:22:51 PM)

Thanks for the input! Surely someone that has actually used the UH motors and flies basic to mild acrobatics can let me know what kind of prop and where to get them will let me know about them. I Thank all who have been so helpfull in my search for these parts and will continue to guide me in my quest for the ultimate fun flyer...Jerry

vmsguy -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (7/2/2007 8:20:59 PM)

In case anybody's interested.. THere are two STMs on ebay right now. Both from the same seller. The gotcha.. They're in Kansas City, MO. Local pickup only....
