More pictures of the big wheels and some detail on the struts, you will find that it lands a lot easier with the big wheels I don`t know if it is because of the weight or because they are softer.

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (2/21/2006 9:48:30 PM)

Greg:

You just iron it, it has no backing. I spent at least a half hour trying to find the backing to pull off, there isn't any. However, when you iron it, the backside sticks just like regular covering. If yours doesn't stick, it's defective. I used some of the yellow to fix an area that I punched a hole in while moving the monster from house to garage and vice versa.

Note: The covering on the Telemaster is the Hobby Lobby Lite Polycover (formerly Oracover), it will melt much easier when using a sealing iron or heat gun.

Greg, Al.

I tried to repair a hole I made in the wing trying to screw the left strut to the hard wood block, and that material would hardly stick using an iron and also the heat gun, it barely held, so I ended using some CA to keep it from flying away. I guess it requires some special knowledge to apply it.
Greg, I meant to use your idea to hold the strut to the wing with hinges, but changed my mind, because there will be a lot of leverage on those struts, and if you are not carefull, handling the wiing pannel you may breack the hinge or the hard wood block. I used electricians eyelets and regular #4 sheet metal screws.

Calixto -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (2/22/2006 2:45:03 PM)

Al.

Seems that the Telemaster electro, is the same as the Telemaster 40, I have one with a .70 Magnum 4 stroke but it needs to have the tail feathers repaired and a new covering, I have flown it at least 100 times and definitely it is a lot of fun but the Senior flyes slower which I like.

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (2/22/2006 5:25:34 PM)

Calixto:

The spare yellow covering is made of a different material than the ARF is covered with, it is the think stuff and the ARF is covered with really light weight thin stuff. I used approx 350 degrees to get it to stick, however, with that heat some of the original material melted and I had to enlarge the repair. Painted works better I guess.

Let change the discussion and talk about on-board cameras for the senior Telemaster. I have bought two of the mini units, one 900mhz and another 2.4mhz. Neigther worked very well, lots of interference and static, I didn't even try to put them in the airplane. I also bought a Canon video camera on sale, however, even the small camera seems large. Any ideas or advice?

so what is the actual replacement covering? does Hobby Lobby carry it?

Calixto -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (2/22/2006 9:27:02 PM)

Al I think I have the solution for your camera. A year an a half ago, I lost a glider in the jungle around our field, and a guy that works at Panasonic, lent me a very small video camera that I attached to my 40 size Telemaster with rubber bands, turned it on before take off and filmed all the area aronund the field from different angles untill we found the glider. and had no problem with glitches. I just called him to find the details and he was not inn, I`ll get back to you tomorrow with all the info on the camera.
Do you think that regular monokote will stick to the Telemaster covering material? I wouldn`t like to try to mend it again with that stuff

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (2/23/2006 12:39:36 AM)

Calixto:

Looking forward to getting the camera info. Lost your plane in the jungle huh? Darn, I'd like to see pictures of a jungle. We have a jungle here in So. Cal, a different kind of jungle, lots of people acting like animals, myself included.

A few months ago I flew one at the local middle school up on the hill, and lost it in the fog. Never found it, spent hours that afternoon when the sun came out. I suspect that it flew over the fence right into the school dumpster. How did that plane know what the ultimate conclusion of that flight would be, even before I finished. LOL

Yes, I think the covering can be ironed over any other covering. The only problem is the heat. The new types of covering are now "low heat". Check out the Hobby Lobby covering.

I will look in the pictures and CD dump I have at home and see if I can find the CD with the film of the jungle, if I find it , I will make a small clip and post it.

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (2/27/2006 11:50:09 PM)

Calixto,

I am posting this message in the forum because I think others might be interested in video photography in a Telemaster. In an email to me you suggested the Panasonic SV-AV25 D-Snap camera as being the type used by your friend. It ends up that he actually used another version for his airborne photos, however I bought the camera that you first suggested. Let me tell you, this Panasonic is just perfect for airborne photography. It is small, it has a Lipo battery, and uses SD memory cards.

Your advice and research seems to be just perfect. I have bought several small wireless cameras and even a full sized Canon video camera, only to be greatly dissatisfied. The wireless cameras at 900 and 2.4 mhz picked up so much interference that they were unusable, they went right to the trash pail. The Canon video camera is too large, even though it's a mini, so it was just put aside. The Panasonic D-snap was purchased new on Ebay for 125 bucks and appears to be absolutely the cat's meow, perfect for airborne photography. I just want to pass that on.

Mike, pay attention, never mind dropping the dolls, this camera will work just perfect in your bomb bay door. Take some shots of the aircraft carriers in San Diego Harbor, forget the doll drops. LOL

Algutkin, I haven't used still cams, but I've had good luck with a couple of different camcorder setups. First, soft-mount the engine. Then mount the camcorder in foam or bubble wrap. I've used a SuperTigre 90 and a YS 91 AC, and with this setup vibration has not been a problem with either. It is critical to locate the camera at the CG, whether it is above or below the fuse.

A few years ago I took a heavy (8.5 pounds) camcorder and hung it under the belly of a Senior Telemaster, and lengthened the landing gear with aluminum channel. It looked like a stork, but took off with the ST90 in about 20 feet with no need for flaps. I got lots of video this way. That plane was lost in a midair while trying to get air-to-air video. Amazingly, the camcorder caught its "killer" on video. The camcorder fell about 200 feet, but the tape survived. The camcorder was trashed and the airframe was "reduced to kit form".

Then I built another and put a smaller, cheap 3-pound camcorder on top of the wing. This setup worked better, and allows me to face the camcorder either forward or backward. Either engine flies it effortlessly. If you are going electric, you shouldn't have to worry about vibration. You'll just need a motor with power equivalent to a 90-size glow.
Incidentally, I've also flown camcorders with a Kadet Senior. The results were not even close. The lift of a Telemaster wing is like no other. So I'd encourage you to try a camcorder again.

Calixto -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (3/1/2006 8:20:21 PM)

Al, let us see de results and post some video clips.

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (3/1/2006 9:31:57 PM)

Calixto:

I will post pictures as soon as I get my son to operate the external video camera or I get the "on board" video camera setup properly. Up to now I have had my friend Jim operate the camera. My clear instruction to Jim were to turn the camera on and let it run, no matter what happens. I told him clearly, "don't turn the camera off, no matter what happens". Jim is really bad at following instructions. I have had some really spectacular crashes that Jim should have gotten on video, only he didn't follow the instructions that I gave him. Jim turned the camera off when he heard me yell OH S%$T when I knew the plane was going to crash.

Now with "on board video" I will be very proud to show off my expertise in flying radio control aircraft. I only hope the camera will survive.

Work is getting in the way of RC flying right now, as I am a public accountant buried in tax season However, at my first opportunity I will be happy to post some very interesting airborne flight video. Until that day comes, you can find me hidden in the little room of our house taking a break from work, soldering Dean's connectors onto electric controllers and batteries.

Hi Herm.

In my Senior Telemaster I am using 5-3/4" from the leading edge.

Greg:
Is it true I must buy a "strut installation kit" for the plane before I can complete the wing assembly? Also: how do I join the two horiz. stab sections?
Thanks.

Calixto -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (3/9/2006 1:18:06 PM)

If you look at the end of page 5 of this thread, you will find a couple of ideas on how to install the struts. Te ARF Senior Telemaster comes with one piece stab, you will have to cut some balsa on the fuse to install it.

You can see a movie of the new Hobby Lobby Telemaster Electra here:

turn the volume up, great music..

still working on the STM..

algutkin -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (3/15/2006 10:50:19 PM)

Hey Herm:

I like the music, great video. However a Telemaster is a Telemaster. it can land in a grass area the size of a football field without a problem. Next, let's try a sidewalk 4 feet wide, 100 feet long. LOL

What size is that Telemaster? My Telemaster is a big yellow ARF, with one honkin prop on that 4130 Axi motor. It can easily land itself in the desert while the pilot is explaning to the park ranger that it won't really hurt anyone to fly it in a National Park.LOL

Greg Covey -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (3/15/2006 11:13:59 PM)

Wow! I missed a whole page of posts while I was away traveling. Life is too busy this time of year in R/C as I have a trade show or competition every few weeks. In case you haven't heard, my two pilots placed 3rd and 5th at the Blaine Austin Extreme Aerobatic Championships in Memphis last weekend. They made me very happy!

I finally finished my strut mounting project for the Senior Telemaster. It is all ready to test fly and I can now do aerobatics. :)

I could not get the spare covering in the kit to work properly. There seemed to be no backing to peel off and no glue to hold it onto the wooden strut so I spray painted mine black with Tamiya acrlyic.

For the wing end, I used Dubro hinges with the metal pins so the strut would stay permanently connected and be able to swing. I slotted the strut, then glued and pinned the hinge in place. It is held to the wing with 6 screws.

For the fuselage end, I wanted a quick disconnect without any tools needed in the field. I choose a 1/4" clevis pin and hitch pin clip from Home Depot.

I made a diagram of my metal bracket to be screwed into the bottom of the fuselage where the thick hardwood block is for the gear mains. The cut off clevis pin will connect the strut to the metal bracket using the pin clip.

After securing the bracket to the fuselage bottom using 3 screws into the hardwood block, I drilled 1/4" holes through the bracket and strut ends. The clevis pin was shortened using a Dremel tool and I took up the length slack with a thick 1/4" washer.

The wings feel strong now and the struts connect or disconnect easily without any tools.

Next up...my wing mount mods.

herm -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (3/15/2006 11:55:43 PM)

Greg, thanks for the very clear pictures.. probably will use your setup on my 1/4 scale cub for strut attachment.. a couple of comments. The pin and clevis you are using, and perhaps the metal strap can create electrical noise with vibration when they rub against each other. The solution is to make a pin out of brass rod and the strap also, the clevis clip can remain steel.

Also, how strong is the hinge that you used?..perhaps replace it with a small brass hinge out of home depot also. Probably ok for this plane but definetely not for the cub.

Herm

Greg Covey -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (3/16/2006 12:39:35 AM)

Hi Herm,

The hinge is a metal pinned Dubro nylon hinge so it should be strong enough for this application. I wish I could make brass hardware like you suggest but I am not much of a machinist. I often prefer to create a repeatable solution for others to copy or buy from Home Depot for my reviews.

Regards.

herm -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (3/16/2006 1:56:09 AM)

no machining required, buy an 1/8" brass rod from the K&S display at the hobby shop, drill 2 holes thru it, this replaces the steel clevis pin and you hold it in place with two of the steel hitch pins that you bought. For the steel strap, just replace it with the same size brass stap out of the k&s display. You could leave the steel strap if you used a nylon washer to insulate steel to steel contact. Many possible ways to do it..

Al,

I actually had a blast with the kids last time out with the TM. I cut up an old T-shirt and made my own parachutes for my son and daughters toys. Unfortunately now I'm out of a field and looking for a club to join. There is one school around the corner that leaves the gate open on the weekends but the field is below grade and there are tall trees all around. I don't want to take a chance of loosing my investment in a tree. I live at the edge of a very large cannon and I could easily hand launch my TM but I don't really have a place to land. I guess I'm in a holding pattern for now with it.

Calixto -> RE: Hobby Lobby Sr. Telemaster ARF (3/22/2006 8:11:10 PM)

Hi Al, how is your aerial photography coming along? have not seen any clips yet.
