Hey Calixto, how ya doin?

It's been raining and extra cold in Southern California the last 3 weekends, no flying for anyone.

In addition, I have to work extra hard this time of year, I am a public accountant. This is how I make the big bucks to spend at Hobby Lobby. No weekends off for me, even if the sun comes out.

I have a garage full of planes with fully charged Lipos and no time to fly. I am not a happy camper right now. I really need to get out and crash aa few planes so I can build some more. LOL

Take Care
Al

Hi Al, good to hear from you again. I guess we are very lucky, we are in the middle of the dry season so we get to fly every week end, and some times we (the old guys) that don`t have to show up at the office every day, get to fly thursdays too. I have put about 20 flights on the Telemaster so far, it is a very fun airplane that even does some aerobatics and lands on a mail stamp with
tlaperons.
Well don`t make too much money and enjoy the hobby.

Calixto:

That little camera is sitting right by the computer, just waiting to be strapped onto the Telemaster. I'm really afraid that the end result will look like my normal family videos. You know, where the camera moves around and gives the viewers a head ache. Guess I could bring it to the office and take some pictures of the exitement, once in while my pencil falls off the desk, or the stapler gets jammed. The camera would also pick up alot of foul language and threats to elimiinate some of our troublesome clients. Actually the best time of day is between 10AM and 2PM, that's when DHL shows up with the Hobby Lobby or FMA order, also the US mailman comes with checks to be deposited. My retired clients call it "mailbox income"

I think it would be fun to use the Telemaster to film another plane, while flying side by side. Today is Thursday, perhaps you could try it out. I've looked through Putfile and haven't seen anything like that. I'm sure it would work if the planes were slowed down.
OH, I forgo something, next time you see one of the smaller cruise ships going through the canal, hold it for me.

Take Care.
Al

Al.
The film I took looking for my glider, came out very clear and steady, and the camera was straped to a 40 size Telemaster with a .70 four stroke engine, yours with an electric motor and a bigger airplane, should come out better.
If I was in your shoes, I would go flying every morning, show up at the office at 10Am untill 2Pm to pick up the checks and the DHL or UPS deliveries, and go back flying in the afternoon, and have my kids or wife do all the boring work. I am training my family to accept that, either they will fire me from work and trow me out of the house, or they will learn, will see, either way I will have a lot of time to fly.

I'm building a hangar 9 J3 Cub. I've got a AXI 4230/16 I'm putting in. Kokam 3200 6S pack, a UBEC and a 15x8 prop. I hope this combo will work well.

Hi Larry,

Yes, that combo will work well. It is exactly what my friend is putting in his H9 J3 Cub. Remember that you can use a 6v UBEC for no additional weight but your servos are faster and stronger.

Hangar 9 continues to make the most incredible looking scale planes!

Mike, I'm real sorry to hear about the wing failure. I was looking forward to seeing movies of the bomb dropping.

I have a son, much older than yours, and many things similar to your joint building project have happened to us over the years. We felt really bad at all of the unexpected failures, but, they did nothing but to strengthen our relationship, instead of hurting it.

When he got older we built RC helicopters together, some crashed, then we souped up and swapped engines in his first trucks, some engines didn't make it, then we got into dirt bikes, then we hopped up jet boats for the river, now it's building a sand rail for Glamus. In all those projects, there were tears expended by both of us, there were angry fights, however the one thing that survived it all is the friendship of father and son. It's OK to shed a tear, kids need to see that their parents are human.

Mike and Al,
Sorry to hear about the crash. I know how your sons feel, my dad crashed my Sr Telemaster on landing once and I had to rebuild it. Luckily it wasn't as bad as a wing failure accident. I'm still flying that same Sr Tele 25 years later with the original covering on it! A few years ago I converted it to electric to fly at SEFF #2. I'm now building a SR Tele ARF for SEFF #5. I'll get some pictures up soon with some stats.

Dave

P.S. Hobby Lobby is giving away 2 each Sr and 40 Telemaster ARFs In the raffle at SEFF this year!

Al was kind enough to offer me a new ARF and I'm going to go pick it up this week. I plan on starting a new thread documenting the mods and to say thanks for an act of generosity.

Hi everyone,

I have been silently following this discussion for some time, and am happy to report that my TM will hopefully make its maiden voyage in two weeks, weather permitting. I am new to electrics, and am having a tough time wading through all of the different LiPo packs and specifications available. I could use some help! I have the Axi 4120/18 motor with the Jeti Advance Plus 70 amp Opto controller. Prop will be the standard APC 14x10 eProp. The LiPo pack I am considering is the "Twenty" PQ44004 4 cell 14.9v 4400 mAh pack, along with the PCM Guard for 4s LiPo packs, and the TPC425 charger. Like I mentioned, I am new to electrics and am not totally sure if this is the right direction to go, LiPo wise. I am also concerned that this is the correct charger to use. I am willing to entertain any other ideas from more experienced electric users out there. I am sure that there are many, many more combinations out there that might be better, and any input will be greatly appreciated!

I am also working on several ideas for mounting the wing struts. Sure wish the manual touched on that. I will also post pics of the finished airplane on the ground and in the air. Thanks, in advance, for your help!

You already bought the motor?, it seems to me that 4 cells is too low, Hobby Lobby calls this a 5-7 cell motor.. it will fly well but with a kind of anemic (in my opinion, many people would be satisfied) climb rate.. your setup is around 500 watts. Bump up the prop to a 16*10 E apc, this will boost power to 630 watts, 45amps and about 60 watts per lb.. even better go to 5 or 6 cells and a 800-1000 watts. Your esc can handle up to 6 cells so that is the limit, good choice of esc btw.

4 cells, 33amps, 14*10 prop, 475 watts at 50watts per lb
4 cells, 45amps, 16*10 prop, 630 watts at 65watts per lb
5 cells, 48amps, 15*8 prop, 820 watts at 80watts per lb
6 cells, 44amps, 13*8 prop, 920 watts at 90watts per lb
6 cells, 49amps, 14*7 prop, 1000 watts at 100 watts per lb

two 3 cell packs would give you versatility, you could use each pack individually in a 40 class plane, or both of them in the TM

I dont know about the 425 charger.. can it do 5-6 cells (otherwise it will limit you in the future)?..if not consider the hyperion chargers or the astro 109.. instead of the pcm charge guard get the more versatile hyperion lba6 balancer/charge guard.. it will stop the charger if any cell goes overvoltage and also balances the pack, and it plugs into the battery you are considering. I own one and it gives me peace of mind when I charge my packs while I am sleeping. It is a better deal than a pcm charge gard.

400-500watts is about the power of a sport 40 glow engine (old K&B ringed 40), about what the senior TM was originally sold for.. very gentle.
