At out last fun fly I took my Patroit XL. This bird is one that I dearly love. I have retracts, Jett 90, flaps, on board volt checker with down plane finder, and she is covered in Worldtex (white) and ultracoat (colors). I hand cut every star. When I pull her out I am very proud of my work.

Status: offline 		Sorry, I Mod. the fuel system by putting the tank over the CG (larger tank and balance) with remote fueler. I fully sheeted the wings aswell. I spent a long time on this one. I am sure there is more, but just wanted to post my pride and joy.

Status: offline 		John, take all the ideas you want. One I highly reccomend is moveing your fuel tank over the CG. I can post a photo if you would like to attempt it (not a real big deal). jlingrel, thank you for your comment. She flys super. Fast and smooth in the air. The flaps are a must. I flew her and landed on the first 2 flights. took more runway than I like and landings where some what fast. The flaps took all that away. With a little power I could bring her in nose up. Looks awesome! with flaps she makes me look a whole lot better than I really am. Here is another photo of the top and side.

Quick question for the reference of others......

Did you use a standard tank ?
Is there a hopper tank installed up front, or are you drawing fuel direct?
More details on the fuel system.

Status: offline 		The stock tank was somewhat small. I really wanted this Patriot to be as perfect as possible, so I called on the advice of a friend that has been in the hobby for over 30 years. We brainstormed and came up with this set up. It really works very well on balance, feed, and more fuel. I used a larger tank. I up-graded the clunk to ¼ scales size. We then constructed a mount over the CG point. I used a stiffer fuel line to the engine which gave it a straight way with no bends to the engine. I thought about a hopper system, but I am glade we did it this way, because the hopper can mess with CG and all line must be real tight and perfect in place. Hope this helps and is really worth the effort to do.

Approximately how far from the carb would you figure the fuel clunk is located ?

Status: offline 		I think it is around 18". I know that is a long line but never had a second of pressure of fuel flow problem. I also use a remote fueler which fueling and un-fueling is a snap. Knock on wood, never had a single dead stick or even a sputter with the nose up. At our last fun fly we had a larger than normal crowed. I flew the Patriot around with some low high speed passes with the wing Whistles doing their thing. I was feeling froggie and went almost full on flaps. she came in very very slow with the nose up. She touched down like a real jet (nose up) . I pulled her into the pitts and she was still running smooth. The engine was not lean, rich, pressure lost, just running as smooth as when I first cranked her. The fuel system me and my friend did on this patriot works very well. I promise

Didn't you use any perry pump or something similar ?

And your tank is not insulated with foam at all Did you fly with a near empty tank ???

Status: offline 		Pump, why. The fuel line is actually industrial air line. Very stiff and works well with the nitro. With this straight line to the crab there is no need for a pump. Why do I need foam around the tank? There is less vibration at the location. It is mounted flat bottom, flat sides, flat top, flat back, and flat front (not a risk of puncher). Bubbles, I have yet to see one single bubble caused from vibration with the ¼ cluck( line is dark red) . No bubble problem so no need for foam. Of course if any reason occurred after running I would added foam or a pump, but I have yet to see any reason for either. This set up work extremely well trust me. One thing that did worry me was all the connection at that location. 2 Flaps, 2 ailerons, not to mentions the two retract servos. I secured and insulated them all with industrial clear thin water line as you can see in the photos.

What is the purpose of moving the tank to the CG? Is the weight shift that noticeable from full fuel to low fuel?

Status: offline 		IMHO, that only makes sense on contest pattern a/c were flight behaviour shall be as consistent at possible throughout the whole flight.
On such a bird, and above all for average pilots that we are, a slight cg modification due to tank getting empty is manageable, if noticeable.

The reason for the fuel system set up was for tank size and balance. If you are planning on staying in the air for more than a few Min. install a larger tank. space is limited up there, so the cg is the place to move it. Also anytime you can put weight over the cg the better it will track and fly over all. imagine a stick that takes weight to one end to balance it. The slightest movement in any direction causes it to move extremely slow or fast in opposite direction. On the other hand take the same weight and put it in the middle while remaining balanced, then the extreme movement is lessen. The patriot was a project that I wanted to be perfect. So far I am 110% happy with all the mods and build. Goodluck and if I can help or give advice with the Patriot XL I will be happy to.

Status: offline 		The manual recomends a 12oz fuel tank, I'm going with a 16oz fuel tank and it is in the fuel tank compartment because it fits some what, I think ( like SkyKass said ) the diference is minimum if you locate the fuel tank over the CG. I have a ST 91 for power plant, sprinair retracts, BVM wheels with brakes ( I had those laying around sooo ), and a few other modifications of my own ( when you have build for so long you tend to do your own things )

It's almost ready, probably it will fly ba next Friday, I will be using a 6V system to get more juice out of the servos, I'm using 2 Hitec 225 mini servos for the elevators, they put out 67oz at 6v. ( plenty )
