Are you looking for free flight towline gliders? If so then an A1 size or A2 size? (about 50 to 60 inch span or up around 70 to 80 inch span).

Of is this RC and you will either hand tow it up or use a High Start.

I'm asking because usually "towline" is a free flight term when used in a general way like you have used it.

Hi B Matthews,
I am looking only for free flight hand towline gliders of 36 inch wingspan.
Can you give any plan or suggesstion for this type of glider.
If you basic proportion diagram then it is more benificial but with it aerofoil is also recomended.
Manish,
India.

36 inch span is an odd size. It doesn't fit any normal contest standard sizes. Is this just for sport flying? If so why not design your own that's sort of semi scale? If it's for a local contest event then you'll want something a bit more serious. An undercambered wing will provide a longer and slower flight time but it'll make it harder to build and cover. A flat bottomed model will be easier to build and cover but not fly quite as long. In other words you would be more dependent on finding a thermal.

For a contest style something with about a 36 by 4.5 to 5 inch wing or make the chord to fit the maximum size of wing area allowed. The stabilizer should be about 12 x 3 and the fin with hinged auto rudder that clicks over after the release should be about 3 x 3 with the rudder about 1/2 to 3/4 inch wide. Overall fuselage length should be about 24 to 27 inches with a 5 inch long nose. For a simple model I'd use a flat bottom section about 3/8 to 7/16 inch thick. Spars would be 1/16 x 1/4 flat top and bottom spars with 1/32 sheet webbing front and back for the center panel and back only for the tips. Dihedral would be tips only with a flat center panel. A 19 inch span center with two 9 inch tip panels and the dihedral set to 3 inches under each tip panel would give you a nice 36 inch span. Keep the weight to about 3.5 to 4 oz and it'll fly like a champ.

Manish,

If you would consider a larger size there are plans available. Bruce was pointing out that a 36" wing span is rather small for a free flight tow line glider but is possible. From our flying experiance we have found two meters to be the minimum for most types of tow line gliders both free flight and radio controlled.

I will look through my books and see what I can find.

If you don't mind a fair amount of building with a result that you end up with a beautiful model then there's plans for download for the 60 inch Super Sinbad at this page....

http://plans.rcmodell.hu/plansport.html

There's also a couple of old timer glider plans you can download from www.theplanpage.com . Look around in the various areas.

If I have some time over the next few days I'll see if I can do up a very simple sketch of a sort of Jetco A1 type glider scaled down to 36 inches.

Because this is obviously just for fun given the size a flat bottom section would be fine and a lot easier to cover. It WILL need a DT timer as well. Either a clockwork type or a DT fuse.

PS: This sort of thing will be a lot faster to build....

Manish,

Bob Holman sells the Super Sinbad plans and laser cut parts for under $50. He does great work. I don't know what shipping would be to India, but it's worth a look at www.bhplans.com
