I know these are closer to toys than real RC hobby equipment but at their age I don't want to spend huge $$. Running a distant 3rd is the mini mauler due to price. But the MM has the added advantage of limited outdoor use. Does anyone have any of these three and care to tell me what you thnk if it/them?

i have a zipzap from radioshack they are fun to mess around with and would be great for little kids they have a small amount of upgrades u can get for them like spare rims new bodys motor upgrades i think u can buy little cones to drive around not sure but yah they are fun and would be great for a 7year old well good luck on your desscion

How large is your budget? If it high enough, I would recommend something like a rustler, or any off-road mini, such as the mini-LST

yea i have a e rusty (esc) and its cool
very very very very very reliable i have one from 6 years ago and all ive done is replaced rear tires and batteries
u get a decent runtime too about 15mins with a 2000mah batt
i have a emaxx and i tell u its the funest electric mt u can get (imo) with a 2 speed manual trans (very cool) and a 30+ top speed its great
something similar is a hot bodies ezilla A(rtr with pair of 2000 mah nicads for $310 on ultimatehobbies.com)
similar to the emaxx (dual motors,4wd etc) ecpept is a bit cheaper (comes with batts unlike emaxx) for $310 like i said
companys out there have special dual packs of batts for emaxxs there like $50 for 2 3000mah batts wich will give u close to 15mins

Since you were looking at the zip-zaps and microsizers(which I have one, they are fun to mess with a little) but Id say check out ebay for around 70-80 bucks you could get a ready to go HPI Micro rs4, itd be good for indoor still since I'd imaging thats what you were planning looking at the little tiny cars(tried outdoor but my microsizer will get hung up on any little thing, where as the mrs4 wont be quite as bad)plus as the kids grow in skill you can slowly hop it up a bit(which is limited with the microsizer type cars) not to mention it be a car you wouldnt get bored driving either...thats my opinion(and yes it would blow away an x-mod or mini-z)

Seven year old kids guys. When I was seven I liked to wreck all my cars, so I think this guy wants somethign really cheap. The microsizer is pretty sweet because it has a turbo button and has really simple controls. The zipzap se is more realistic. There is also a zipzaps monster truck that can be run outside and is very durable. If you want something a little bigger and faster look at superslicks. All of them are fun. Later.

7 year old? Skip the ZZ & MS. Even the Gen1 Xmod is only going for around $25 now and though it can't steer very well, it should make a good basher/beginner car. The Xmod Evo ($60) is also a large improvement over the Gen1 Xmod. Of course, by sticking to the Shack, replacement parts should be easy to find though they are probably still being released for the Evo. Then after they out grow it if they out grow it, something better can be purchased. I write if since I also own a lot of minis, including both generation Xmods, a ZZMT, Kyoshos, Iwavers, Losi, Xray, AE, and so on.

I'd say dont spend money on an X-mod, yeah they are alright, and with the AWD drive could prolly beat mini-z, cept the new one which is AWD. but when the x-mod evo is 60 and min-z's arnt that cheap either than you can get the used micro rs4 much cheaper and have a much better car and gear, also if it has a stock motor, stock batteries and stuff I think you could teach a 7 year old to drive it without much problem, plus then theyd be very good drivers early on, plus the fact than an rs4 fully modded could top out near 80(not cheap but it could do it)more realistic goal is 40-60 which I think my Micro Street Force with the mamba, and other mods will be doing. Ill let you know how I like it

Around here there is one problem with owning an HPI MRS4 or an Xray M18, it's called getting replacement parts. It's difficult enough since one has to order tires. Of course, a young child may not care if he has to wait for replacement parts.

Just curious, but why did you get a Duratrax Micro Street Force over an MRS4 or an M18 if you are pushing the MRS4 or do you also own an MRS4? Then again, it seems like I recall you asking about whether or not an MRS4 ball diff will fit a MSF, so that seems to state that you don't own a MRS4.

Yeah I have(or would if the guy would ship the darn thing already) a micro street force, but I have read up on all kinds of stuff about 1/18th stuff because I have always liked them and now especially since i have one comming, reason I push a micro rs4, simple, they are easy to find used, MSF is dicontinued but the make all the parts yet, and also its so close to a Mrs4 that for about 20 bucks you could convert it, I think the rear pod is the same which is why I asked bout the ball diff, since mine is recieving a mamba comp-x package, and those stock diffs wont last to long, already have the aluminum CV shafts that duratrax makes(which for 17 bucks they are really nice pieces of machining, I'm a machinist(manual, CNC programing, basicly eveything) full time at the moment and know nice work when I see it)i got them right away as a mamba with thrash the plastic ones very quick, I bought the MSF cuz a guy had three on ebay he was selling and for 70 bucks it was a ncie deal, with the fuatab radio, ball bearings, a HPI viper body plus the stock one, I like the Hpi's they are nice simple little cars, the M18 is probably more reliable but is more expensive so If your gonna let kids drive it why buy a real race car like the M18, all Im saying is for what an x-mod evo costs(i looked at some before I bought the MSF) You can get a Mrs4 which is much better quality, and im not ripping on x-mods, but when I get my MSF running and setup with that mamba no x-mod will come close at all. and if you wedged a big motor in the x-mod wich is limited then the MSF would still handle better, All Im saying is its probably the best value for the money, not the best not the cheapest but for the money for a nice used one its a good deal...oh and tower stocks all the parts for the MSF and Mrs4, my last order got from IL to PA in one or two days, so just order stuff before it wears out, and stock an extra few of the parts that break more often(which arnt many on a stock Mrs4.

No experience here on the microsizer, but I do have 6,7 and 10 yr old boys. ZipZaps SEs are on sale now for about $13.00. You can drive up to 6 at once together with your kids on your table top - nothing to get hung up on. Just put something around the edge to keep them from driving off. Steering on the SEs is somewhat proportional over the standard ZipZaps, though nothing like larger scale cars.

Some of the internal batteries on our ZZ SEs went bad after about a year so I called up RS and order some more.

We build our own little ZipZaps tracks and have a little fun father sons time. We have XMODS too, but when we don't have space to lay out the XMODS track we get the ZipZaps. Here's a little video -(Hi 9.9 MB and Lo 2.9MB.

Good luck with what ever you decide.

for a seven year old, zip zaps are awesome... sure, there a little small to try and mess with... i mean, if you kid gets interested in the mechanics... (which would be one reason why a larger car would be cool... but costly and risky)

i mean, you can just set some things out in a table, and race around them with your kids... get a couple extra so when they have some friends come over they could race... that could be kind of expensive... but it makes a spectacular christmas gift

dads fun~ One of my batteries have gotten low as well... it would be really really cool if i could pick up a cell thats like 150mah but i cant find any... did radioshack send you one? would they know if i could get one?

xmods are also a good idea... but less kids that are 7 years old (ie. his friends) would be able to afford one, so it wouldnt be as fun i dont think... sure, if you have a decent sized table, you could still race them on it... more upgrades... prolly would last longer... and he might get intrested in upgrading parts and rc cars in general...

18th scale cars are awesome too... if you one, you could run it outside and indoors...

id say stick with the zipzaps .. nice and cheap... and expendible...

thats just my two cents...

I ordered replacement cells just yesterday so they aren't here yet, but I called the Radio Shack number and give them the car's catalog number (from their web page) and they were able to look up the replacement. They're a little over $3 each. I'm sure they're available other places too.

I was looking at Mini's for my 5 and 8 YO daughters.... They both asked for "R/C Cars' For Christmas. I got them these.. They also asked for a Nintendo Game Cube and Mario Kart. So they kind of fit the theme.
