I have one of the Super Sport 40 engines that I used in Standard class Racing here in the midwest. That class has kind of gone by the wayside and I want ot use my engine for something else. I know I need a regular carb for it but I wanted to get an idea of how the engine can be ran. Is it going to be stricly a high rpm engine? Should I stick with props similar to what I was using on my Quickies or can I load it down more?
Thanks,,, Matt

Right now I'm leaning towards putting it on my Diamond Dust but that won't last long from what I understand.

Hi Matt....

If you have the CAPS configuration SS40, sure, you can use it as a sport engine. The muffler and rpm are the big considerations.

With the exception of the carb and muffler (and in the caps version, the nelson head button) its the same as a regular SJ-40 inside.

The carb, as you may have seen, will actually allow the engine to run in midrange and idle (3000 rpm or so ). That was done on purpose some time ago for some regional rules that required an engine that could idle for 15 seconds. For a DD or Shrike or Magnum or something similar that is probably ok. If you want a tick-over idle, you would want to swap the carb, head button.

The SS muffler is tuned to run around 17,500 to 18,500 rpm. With the 8.5" props we get up around 20K for racing, but the primary tuning range is more toward 18K. Prop the engine to run anything over 17,000 rpm on the ground, and it will run great. A standard blade 9x8 , 8.75x8W, 8.8x8.5 are good choices for sport use. Even a 10x5 or 10x6 are worth playing with

Let me know how you make out

Bob

Mine is the CAPS version. Is swapping the head button really needed? I knew it would be just fine on the Dust but I was more wondering what to do with it after the Dust dies. I'm not real picky on idle but the SS carb won't transition for nothing. I was just wondering about use with more common 40 size props. An APC 10-4 or 5 may be the ticket if I can get it to turn close to the 17K.
Thanks,,, Matt

Hi Matt....

actually its the nelson plug that makes it hard to transition. especially the HD plugs... they are kinda cold. Get them a little wet (rich) and they go out during transition. That is why I mentioned the head button swap as part of the fully-functional package.

I had my old SEMPRA SS-40 on a Ultra Sport .40 for a while. (the SEMPRA engine was basically the same as the CAPS engine, just had a regular glow plug). Worked fine in the sport roll with a 10x6 or 9x7 up front. RPM was ok, and it unloaded nicely in the air.

I still have a couple of CAPS SS-40s sitting around too.

Put the engine on a test stand, and play with it a bit

Bob

Do you have part #s for the head button and carb. I may as well order them while I have a few extra bucks.
Thanks,,,Matt

The best way to do this is to send the engine to Dub, and let him fit the head button with the sleeve. He may be able to use some of the SS carb to build up a sport carb for you too.

Otherwise, order from the website - simply note on the order form you want a SJ-40 head button, SJ-40 carb - and that you are converting a CAPS engine to sport use.
