I have been away from the Falcon doing household jobs. I am back. All my main components are now completed. See picture of the main wing on top of mfuselage. There will be very little adjustment needed. I added steering to the Falcon. The gas tank is sitting right. The engine installation also complete. I will start the final sanding and covering soon, judge for yourself.

Received my OS Max III 15 for the Skylark.
I have been reviewing a few details on my fuselage. Final sanding in the week end , may have enough time to start covering.
Bad news for my Kraft, it refused to work when I tried to do some testing.
Eclosed a picture of my little OS

I messed up my week end plan. It took me forever to do a couple a minor adjustment and I had a lot of sanding overall and on the wing tips to bring them to the airfoil ( no more )
Also I quit early because I was spitting balsa dust.
I mounted the airplane on its legs. She looks pretty racy
I had a pilot , a survivor of a prior air disaster, waiting for his turn to fly again. Once he sat in he could not close the cockpit. He said his little brother will fly it. OK by me.!

Bob, I am getting to the interesting phase of my build with the covering. I have a question, - not as bad as How do you iron on the silk and dope finish. The white stripes should be very thin, they will stick on. Now how do I seal them so they stay on the plane?
As you must have seen, I did get an old OS 15 ( post 131 ) to power my Skylark. My Skylark is the narrow nose version with multi pieces side.
Physically, the Veco is twice the volume of the OS and much longer in front. No surprise now that it is tight.
Thanks
Ray

Ray, on my monokoted version I used stripeing tape from an automotive paint store. Again cleaning the film with denatured alcohol before applying. Then where the tape would possibly see any fuel residue I used a tiny brush and applied just the slightest amount of thin CA to the edges of the tape. Worked really well but you have to be very careful. Here is a picture of my prototype Falcon 56 in Monokote.

Hi Ray,
The pictures are nice, but your plane looks better in person.

Thank again, Paul

Paul, today I added a little color to the Falcon. In this set of pictures, your see the wing taken it final shape as I put the silk on. I used Nitrate to glue the silk and to fill in the weave. Four coats is doing it, thinned 50%. I also used a bit a the Florida Sunshine at time to speed up the drying. There was some wind, the smell was not bad. Next I switchj to Butyrate full strength 4 coats, some light sanding in between coat. Second color and striping, and two final clear to seal everything. That should do it. I enjoy the day. Me and the Falcon. It is a little challenging, I like that. I use a 1" brush, my index and my right thumb. The silk takes the wing tip p;retty good.

Hi Ray,
From the pictures, it looks like you have a little blushing of the clear.
Sig sells "retarder" in small bottles. Use a little in some very thinned dope to get the blush out.
If you put too many coats of dope over the blushed areas it becomes very hard to get the blush out.

Paul, Right you are but when I did the first coat of thinned dope, it disapeared. The pictures are the gluing part. 2 1/2 hours in all.

A little more red silk tonite. I did the tail area. With now, a little more experience, things went pretty fast. The pictures showing the silk glued on with Nitrate. I have now 4 coats of thinned Nitrate on the wing plus one Butyrate full strenght. I will do some sanding in between coats.
My wing after 5 coats of dope weights 15 onzes. The target is 3.5 lbs. I only have a play of 2 lbs 9 onzes to go for the rest of the airplane.
Butyrate dope smells stronger than Nitrate, and I think it is a little thicker. Maybe I dream !

Now I weighted the rest of the plane

Plane, engine gas tank, gear. wheels.tail weights 1lb 10 onzes
Flight pack receiver, 3 servos, battery ( 700 ), switch 6 onzes - I cannot use the Kraft on this plane _ problem _ I have to send it to get it fixed.
I have 8 onzes in the bank to finish. Can it be done? We will see. I wish 7.999999

Very nice flying plane those Falcons. Got one too, bought it in flying trim from an elderly gentleman years ago - Not build very well, can drop a brick through the aileron and elevator gaps BUT it flies like a dream.

What type of nitrate are you using? I was told that one can use it to shrink Oratex/Solartex and want to test it but dont know where to get the nitrate. I'll appreciate your input.

Hi, I am using both Nitrate and Butyrate. Nitrate to start, four coats thinned 50%. Then I switch to Butyrate full strenght 4 coats also. Then ready for trim and stripes.
I use silk. The dope shrinks it. The dope I use is made by Sig, bought at my hobby shop.
Good luck
Ray

Anyone know what the airfoil section was on the Falcons? I built one from kit in the early '80's, and it seems like I remember the section being referenced on the plan (NACA2409 or something) I know it was a pretty generic semi-symmetrical, but would like to know the exact section, I'm considering using it on an upcoming scratechbuild. I built 2, they were very popular around here back then,m and flew superbly

Paul, tonite I though I was gone to show you the FaLCON all done except for the final clear coats. Not to be, my striping in white is causing me heaDache.
The thin plastic ( great planes ) refuses to take the sharp turns 3/16 wide.Later I will try heat some bit and see what it does.
Ray.

If somebody knows a secret I dont, Please tell me. The plastic sticks very good to the fresh dope. I will do my final coats with a spray gun. The dope does not touch the plastic ( I tested)

I have used the plastic tape and ever so lightly seal around the edges with thin CA. Make sure everything is room temperature. Also pulling it slightly will allow it to lay flat for a while then hit the edges with thin CA.

Bob, I will find a solution to the strping saturday. One way or another.

To finish the year, I want to make some old timers like me smile a little.
I dug out a picture I did a while back , not posted , of the silk covering of the fuselage.
I think it was the third side ( the top was last) I was using nitrate to stick the silk ( thinned 50% )
Nitrate dries very quickly then a simple razor blade cut the excess easily.
Happy New Year to all of the Falcon lovers and others!

Hi ! today, new year day, I came with the brilliant idea of doing my stickers on the fin. Tomorrow like I wrote the striping.
The stickers looked very good on the sheet, however when I used my scissor to cut them apart, it was a different story. The top layer broke down in many little parts. I took the challenge and wet the paper. Twice as long as normal. Then the transfer to the fin. It became a puzzle game , 25 pieces. Armed with a pointed knife, a wet towel, my nails, my thumbs, I placed the bird and name the best a could. You are looking at the end result. I will have a clear sprayed lignly over it, and this is it. One side is enough for today, I'll do the other one tomorrow. I dont want to start the year with pressure like that.

proptop, when I started building that plane, I stated I would try to duplicate the plane flown by John Wisnieswski ( picture =black and white, page three),
except for the glue and the silk and dope, all of it come from my kit box. The color of the wood sometime was not even, and I could have had better match, but I resisted any temptations. Whatever the end result, it is Goldberg to the last little stick.
Little brother pilot is fresh out of flight school (TH) he said she will fly good because she is straight and true. Last I seen of him, he was painting his helmet.
Have a good evening.
Ray
