I finished up the first panel. After I square cut my wing tip. Using the shape part I trace for the second one. I made a paper patern using the plan. Then I glued the block in place. Fitted my # 1 rib at the prescribed angle. Sanded leading and trailing to match angle. Panel was done except for the sanding of the wing tip.

I will spare you the second panel. Identical but reverse. I was a little faster because of the experience I gained on the first. When I got it to the same stage I dry joined the panels to see how I did. Pretty good ! only need a little extra sanding on the leading and trailing to have my two ribs matching good.
8.50PM I called it a day.

the last two for the day. This is going like I have expected. I also ran to my RC store to buy what I needed to finish but for the covering materials.

It's good that you are using the Veco .19 engine as the original wing design is a bit weak for bigger engines, even with silk. Mine flew very well with it's Orbit (3 PS-4 servos, same size as the KPS-12) and the OS .19 power. It also did pretty well when I added ailerons after 40 or 50 flights.

The ST G21-35 combat motor might have been a mistake though it's Kavan carb did work pretty well considering. However when I added more elevator throw to try to get it to spin...

Oh well. 39 years later, I have another half built, (same version of the kit), and have built the same wing without any addition structure. But this time the engine is limited to an Enya .25

The wing of the Falcon 56 is plenty strong enough for its purpose. Mr Goldberg designed this plane to be light, and it is a primary trainer in RC. This little plane should weight 3.5 lbs. Of course if you put a 46 in it, you may experience structural damage pretty soon. If you own a 46 and you want speed, build an Ultra Sport40. If you insist on the Falcon then obtain a digging permit before you go flying because you will bury her pretty deep ! Kidding!

I want to reproduce the original as much as I can.

Hi, Last night, I did get a panic call from my youngest boy ( 20) he said he heard a netallic noise in his rear brakes and he felt he could not wait and they needed to be replace the same night.
He needed help, ( car is a Tiburon 05) first he needed financial aid to buy the parts, and then my jack stands and tools and some advise. $82.00 later he started the job. He was a good worker 2 1/2 hrs in all including the bleeding. And then thank you dad, i'll repay you. Sound familiar11

Back to the Falcon. My two panels done I proceeded to adjust my dihedral to the number on the plan. 5 3/4" first I made sure all the joiners and slots in the ribs were nice and smooth.
That was the first job where I had to pay attention, and sand here and there. with a popscl stick I did a nice little sander and carefully adjusted all. That was it last night.

Tonite I epoxied one side and then glue the other side. Hysol epoxy does not dry quick, I left the clamps on 3 hours. and then put the wing in my wind rack to dry overnite. Need only the middle sheeting to finish the wing, ready for final sanding and covering.

Next I will go with the stab and elevator and I sorted all the wood.
couple of picture of my wing, the middle joint, pretty good. The white stuff you can see is hysol. Hysol grips, never let go. Plus it does sand easy.\
Last picture is the plan fuselage side , between former B and C, the diagonal must have been the old cut for the two pieces fuselage.

The Falcon is looking good! About the brake job...bleeding is good. My son and I have a running gag now that if someone bleeds the project will be a success. There is much rejoicing at the shedding of blood. (as long as we don't have to take a time out to visit the local emergency ward) So when you get back to work on the Falcon be sure to poke yourself with a pin or knick yourself with a knife!

Cheers

Gord, a little blood is fine cause the main color of my Falcon will be red. So far I zap one finger on a piece of wood, when I pulled, a little skin was left behind and there was a trace of red. The I drilled 5/64 on the tip of my left index when the wood was really soft. I wish I can survive this build.
Serious now. When you did your III, do you remember doing the stab if ribs # 1 & 2 where fitting good over the triangular brace glued to the leading edge. Also # 2 is not cut deep enough to connect into the notches of the leading edge. It is nothing serious but ?, is it different now.

Actually I built the MKII and had to tweak those ribs as well. I looked at the Falcon III first but was a little disillusioned with the quality of the wood. I would really like to get a look at the Early R/C version of the Falcon.
I found the MKII new in the box in the forums here. Not everything fit beautifully right off the bat but it was close enough that some sandpaper and an X-acto knife was all I needed. The wood in the old kit was really nice. I think I recut one piece of the sheeting because it was a little soft as well as the rudder.

Cheers

You see my kit is + - 39 years old. I think good balsa was easier to get then. I stored mine in my garage( Hot and humid ) for many years. I never looked at it.
When I opened it to look at the wood and snap off the die cut, I was pleasantly surprised. All was nice and straight. A couple of little things broke off the fuselage framing the ones half size, Zap fixed that. otherwise it was fine. Leading and trailing edges were just very good. Like your saying a little sandpaper and Xto is taking care of the misfit.
The Falcon was the first kit ever I built. it took me then a whole winter. All white glue, two sticks, then wait for tomorrow. I should frame this one in one week. I will finish silk and dope, I dont know how long this will take me. I want to do her light, she will fly better.
I am right in the middle of summer, I can go the field anytime, 600X50 paved. City maintained.
2.00 to get in in the week end. free week days, no membership. AMA only

If you plan on finishing the plane with silk and dope, I'd take a little extra care to fill the cutouts in the fuselage sides with balsa.
The holes for the tabs on the formers to be placed into will show after the dope shrinks a little.
If they are filled 100% with balsa they will only show minimally.

I have a newer Falcon on the shelf and I plan on cutting new sides to eliminate those cut outs.

I plan on making my new Falcon look like my original from 1963.

You are also correct, the old kit has better balsa. If I get another one, it will definitely be from Early RC.

Your's looks great. Nice job.

It is funny that you bring that up now. Last night I assembled my fuselage with elastic bands and I was thinking about that. Some of the holes are pretty sloppy, in front. I will have to pay special attention.
An original 56 has to be done with silk and dope !

I will also do the original colors, on the kit box

Tonite I mounted the stab. The construction is pretty similar to the main wing, but I should have made this one first as a practise for the main. Pretty straightforward. Uou will note that I inserted the fin in its place before gluing the rib #1 on either side. I had a little adhesion when I went to remove it so I ran my Xcto carefully along the part I suspected and it worked. It came out nice.
Last the picture of my fuselage assembled. PD1 you can see the slots you were talking about this area will need attention before finishing. I hope I get delivery of my silk in time.
This project is progressing nicely. Tomorrow I will glue the wing tips on the stab, sand them and sheet the middle, getting ready to finish the parts. Then likely saturday will attack the fuselage. Not much wood left in my box now

To day I finished my stab ( middle sheeting ) sanded my wing tips, prepared and elevator ( inserted a pice of hard in the middle to join ) and cut the rudder space. i also finished the middle of wing sheeting on the wing. I also sanded the rudder,
Now the interesting part was adjusting my Veco to the shear plate. The lenght of my engine is about 5/8" more than the OS 15 shown on the plan. To keep the prop about the same as the plan I have to back up my engine. There is only 1/4" from the back of the engine to the firewall. The engine is 1 3/16 wide . My engine is filling the nose area = the funny thing is that it is the smallest engine I have here but for a Cox 10. If you want to install like a 35, you need to rethink the nose of the Falcon.
Also worth noting, you can see my new muffler in the picture. The exhaust opening is equal to the fuselage top - the plan OS 15 is also very thight for exhaust.
I will have to create relief on the fuselage side and the front of the hatch to use a muffler. The exhaust will go directly to the front of wing and my nice canopy !!

I had a K&B 19 on mine. Wasn't a lot of room, but it fit.
Eventually after a lot of crashes, the K&B 45 fit in just fine.

These pictures were taken in March 64.
By March 65 the plane looked a lot different.

PD1, great pictures ! I enjoy that.
The finish on your Falcon looks very good. Your radio equipment is somewhat mysterious. The antenna must have been 10' tall.
Your K & B 19 must have been pretty close to my Veco 19. The Veco is the performance engine of K & B at that time.
Also your flying field is close to water, making retrieval of 'forced' landing difficult at time.
My first contact with RC planes was in 1966 in Toronto.

The radio equipment was home made. My dad even made the reeds in the receiver.
At that time, there wasn't a consensus on where to put all the switches.

Later I modified a Falcon 56 for water.
kind of ugly, but did the whole class three pattern without ailerons.

I see the rudder and elev are much bigger so is the engine.
Your pictures and date dont make me any younger.
Very creative work anyhow. Good job ! In 1970 I was flying a Kadet with 4 propor , yellow and blue , silk and dope

Hi, more of the Falcon. First my Cherokee, it did its maiden flight on Sunday. The only thing, my SF 46 did not like Great Planes enclosed cowling. The engine was overheating so I removed the cowling until such time that the engine has a little time. The flight went good, took off in 30 35 feet, 10 minutes of getting used to and the plane came in nice and easy for the first landing. Perfect. Sorry for the blurred picture
No that the tail end of the Falcon is done but for the final sanding. I put the focus on the fuselage, and most of it is done. Nose area, main landing gear, braces done.
Here is some pictures of what I did last night and tonite.
