I'm trying to design a small glider. What is a good starting point for an airfoil?

Thanks,
Eli Liechty

Take a look around at the kits and scratch build plans for roughly the size of glider that you are thinking of.

See what they are using and the kind of proportions (span, chord, moment arm, areas) involved.

Then find a foil that fits pretty closely to what you see.

My first design and scratch glider took about two years of research to get "right" on paper before building. It took three builds to get the bugs worked out.

Good luck...

Hi Eli

It depends on what you want to do with it. I have got good experiences with the RG 15. It is a perfect allrounder.

Armin

This would be the same one as in the aerodynamics forum thread then I assume......

So just how small is small? 60 inch handlaunch or 1 meter mosquito class?

Go read what Ollie said in the other thread. Good words about the difficulties in building accurately. The RG is a great airfoil but the shape is critical if you want it to perform as advertised. If you're just making up a few ribs and spars and then covering it then you may find you're better off with a plain old ClarkY. Or perhaps one of the free flight airfoils that work well at low speeds and loadings. Just don't expect most of them to penetrate very well.

So we are back to the same question..... How do you want your glider to fly? Fast, slow or inbetween? How big is it going to be and how heavy do you think you can make it?

You're question all by itself isn't much better than asking "I want to design an airplane" without telling us if it's a hang glider or a mach 32 transport.

1M is small yikes, what have i been doing the past 6 years lol
you'll need light gear to thermal, or a good hil to soar if you go much smaller.
this is what happens if you go too small and get aero towed to a dot, courtesy of Cartman
