I recently bought a coople of used planes and parts and with it came a fairly ne looking KDS 46. The problem is the mount where the carb goes has a couple tiny cracks so the carb tighten in there securley. Can the cracks be fixed if so how? I also got and extra K & B .61 This doesn't look as new, in fact it had silicon caulking around the carb and many of the fittings. I cleaned this one up and got it running. After I got it started I would take off the glow plug and it would die. I then left the glow plug and for about thirty seconds and throttled it up and then took it off and it ran for a couple of minutes and then died. It didn't seem to leak at any of the fittings. I don't know what this caulking was for. Is this motor okay, or junk? by the way I have never flown a airplane before so all of this is new.
Thanks
Scott.

Sounds like a bad glow plug in the .61....

as for the MDS....if it is fairly new you might want to check on a new crankcase or if it has a detatchable fron housing.....a new housing.....or.....you can use JB Weld or PC7 and weld it back on there......most of the time that works....

The only DUMB question is the one ya DON't ask....

The caulking was to prevent airleaks....Sounds like you cleaned it up too good...Was the caulking RED?? If so it was to stop or prevent air ....
Good Luck,

No the caulking was clear, and in bad shape. How do I know if it has ans air leak and what should I use if it does. What glow plug do I look for. I'm really new to this.
Where can I purchase parts for the MDS?

Scott

A lot of times the parts aren't machined correctly to make that perfect fit.
Some pilot will take the red sealant...NAPA, and attempt to seal around the carb.
I would try this sealant where you saw the clear stuff.. Tighten all screws..(NOT OVERTIGHTEN)(silicone)....I am not familure with this make of engine, as I fly other brands...
If I am not mistaken...Tower sells this brand...If not ask your local hobby shop )LHS and thet can help....do you have an instructor??? I strongly suggest you get one...It will save you a lot of heartache.

I use the Fox miracle plug...about 3 bucks...If you go to an event..(where Fox puts on a show)..you can buy them for 2 bucks each.
Remove your plug, and attach your glow...see if it is glowing bright..This is not a guarantee but you can see if you are getting fire....Some glow but aren't good...If it is dead...It will not glow at all.
I would replace the glow plug with a new one anyway, and seal where it was..use good fuel...NOT OLD FUEL! Make sure you glow starter is charged,
open 2 1/2 turns on the needle valve and start it! Hold you finger over the muffler (WITHOUT GLOW STARTER) and rotate the prop until you see fuel come up into the line. Attach glow and start.
Adjust accordingly...cw for leaner...ccw for richer...
Good Luck,
