I had a similar problem with Battlefield2. It worked well a few times, then got unstable 9 out of 10 times. Then finally crashed every time i started the program (while loading). Crash to desktop. I tried everything. Without any luck. All my other more graphics intensive games (Doom3, Americas Army, HalfLife2, Flight Simulator 2004) was working with no trouble whatsoever. I was about to return the BF2 game to the shop, but tried one last thing --> a complete and clean reinstall of the operating system (WinXP Home SP2). After that everything worked flawlessly. No problems whatsoever after that clean reinstall. As a bonus, startup time was reduced significantly and everything else felt better. It is a pain to do a clean reinstall, but in some cases it is absolutely worth it. If it is more than a year since last clean reinstall of your OS, I would consider doing it before giving up. Yours Nixxon BELOW IS WHAT I WENT THROUGH TO FIX MY PROBLEM WITH BF2: Subject I have a Dell Dimension 8300, P4 3 MHz Prescott, 1 gig ram, ATi Radeon 9800 PRO... Discussion Thread Response (Landon F.) 08/19/2005 02:20 PM Hello, Sometimes the advanced features of the ATI Radeon series of video chipsets can cause issues with the game you may be experiencing. To disable these features please go over the following: This issue can be avoided by setting the Wait for Vertical Sync to always off. To do this, follow these steps: 1. Right-Click on your desktop and select “Properties”. 2. Click on the “Settings” tab on the upper right of the display properties box. 3. Click on the “Advanced” button just below color quality. 4. Select the “ATI 3D tab”. 5. Click the “Use custom settings” check box. (Skip to 6 if a check mark is already displayed in the box.) 6. Click the “Custom button”. The ATI 3D Properties window will now displayed. We will not set the Wait for Vertical Sync is now set to Off. 1. Set the Wait for Vertical Sync: to Always Off, by moving the slider all the way to the left 2. Click, Apply 3. Click, OK. The Wait for Vertical Sync is now set to Off. If the trouble continues, repeat these steps 1 – 6 and set Antialiasing and Anisotropic filtering to 2x On the ATI 3D Properties page: 1. Uncheck Application Preference for Antialiasing and Anisotropic filtering 2. Set them both to 2x, by moving the slider all the way to the left 3. Click, Apply 4. Click, OK. If for some reason you need to restore the defaults to these settings either because they did not work or they are affecting other games please follow these steps: 1. Follow steps 1-6 on the above to get to the appropriate screen. 2. Simply click the “Defaults” button in the bottom right of the properties window. 3. Click “Apply”, then “OK”. Let us know if you need further assistance. Customer 08/19/2005 04:23 AM I have done the following changes in the registry (regarding optical drives). Still CTD. Click the Start button, click Run. In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK. Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE. NOTE: When you click the plus sign (+) next to a folder, it will expand displaying the folders it contains in the left-hand pane of the Registry Editor. When a folder is highlighted, its contents will be displayed in the right-hand pane of the Registry Editor. Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM. Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet. Click the plus sign (+) next to Control. Click the plus sign (+) next to Class. Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}. On the right side of the window, click UpperFilters. Click Edit on the menu bar. Click Delete, and then click OK. On the right side of the window, click LowerFilters. Click Edit on the menu bar. Click Delete, and then click OK. Click File, and then click Exit. Restart the computer normally I also updated the firmware for my CD/DVD drive without any luck. I also tried running BF2 with no DeamonTools virtual drives activated + reboot. No difference, no luck... L o o k i n g f o r w a r d t o t h e 1 . 3 patch ! ! ! Customer 08/19/2005 02:11 AM I have also, as the game salesperson suggested, uninstalled my current video drivers and installed Catalyst 5.1 drivers. They are supposed to be the best regarding framerates and sturdyness. Still no help... CTD every time while loading. He informed me that there is a new patch coming soon... Is this correct? Customer 08/18/2005 12:22 PM I checked BIOS, pressing F2 at startup, selected "Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options)" --> "Primary VideoController". It was set to "AGP" and not the other option "Auto". This seems correct. I tried turning Hyperthreading off in BIOS, but that did not make any difference. BF2 still crashes to desktop on me Customer 08/18/2005 04:46 AM You wrote "...your new video card to function correctly" I have not installed a new video card. The machine was delivered with the very same ATi Radeon 9800 Pro card that I use today... I also believe that the only video ports on my computer are the 2 ports on the ATi Radeon 9800 Pro card. There are a lot of video drivers in my system. How do I know which ones I can delete? And how do I find them all? Response (Bret D.) 08/17/2005 01:15 PM Hello, Thank you for contacting EA technical support. I am sorry that you are having difficulty. It is possible that your system has onboard video that might be conflicting with the game. After looking over your system settings it seems that you have an onboard video chipset that was never disabled in your BIOS. You will need to disable this in order for the game and your new video card to function correctly. Some times people will recommend Loading your Windows Device manager and disabling the Onboard video chipset from there. This is NOT the proper way to disable an onboard video card. This step cannot be done inside Windows, it MUST be done in your system BIOS. If completed correctly, it should not even show up in your Windows Device Manager. You will want to contact your computer retailer for help with this step. If this solved your issue, please update your incident and let us know. Your feedback is useful to us and the EA community. -EA Bret Customer 08/17/2005 12:52 AM I installed the newest ATi drivers (5-7_xp-2k_dd_cp_wdm_24085) and tried both "advanced" --> "drivers only" and "express install (recommended)". I tried as is: no change in game behavior - crash to desktop while loading map. I minimized every value in screen properties, 3D, "custom", se enclosured file # 7. It still did not work any better. Even if I also minimized all values in video setup in BF2 to "low quality". I have made a new DxDiag report, encl. # 8. Maybe BF2 is not meant for my machine? (I run BF1942, HL2, Americas Army, Wolfenstein ET etc. in highest quality modes (1280x1024 32BPP) without any problems. Doom3 I had to return to the shop due to in game crashes every now and then) Any more clues? Does the DxDiag report look good now? Response (Ariel Y.) 08/16/2005 12:29 PM Hello, Thank you for contacting EA technical support. I am sorry that you are having difficulty. I have looked over the system information included with your email and it appears that you are in need of an updated driver for your video card. Go to the following website and follow the simple instructions to download the latest drivers. The following instructions are solely provided as a general guide as each manufacturer may utilize a different method for installation. Your video card driver can be obtained by taking the following steps: 1. Go to: http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html 2. Click on Drivers and Software on the left hand column (if you do not see a + sign in front you should see the nest step below) 3. Click on your Operating System (again if you do no have a + sign scroll down to find out Operating System) 4. Click on your Video card type 5. The Right Pane refreshes to give you the current drivers for your video card. 6. Click on "Download". 7. Click on "Save" 8. Set the drop down box next to Save in to Desktop and click the "Save" button. 9. The file that has been copied to your desktop is a self extracting executable, meaning you should be able to double click on it and follow the directions to install it. It is normal to have to restart your computer after this is complete. If you need a previous driver, click on “Previous Drivers and Software” Customer 08/15/2005 02:24 PM What is the correct link to submit to ATi or Dell for access to this very error history / troubleshooting log? Customer 08/15/2005 02:23 PM I have made a new DxDiag test with all possible tests executed successfully, see encl # 5 I also have run an ATi error tester (AtiInsp.exe) with an enclosed report, encl # 6 Is the DxDiag report more complete and comprehensive now? Does the "ATi error report.txt" enlight anything? Should I contact ATi and report the problem? Yours Nicolai F.
