Try this: go to "Start" > "Control Panel" > "Display" > "Settings" > "Advanced" > "Monitor" then change the "Screen refresh rate" to 60 Hertz.

I had a problem with the screen freezing in AFPD and that sorted it, so you never know it may work for you.

BW!

Greg.

Interestingly Greg I have tried all sorts of different setting for the refresh rate - in my case both monitors start at 60 - but I tried a wide variety of different numbers / settings - not any change (well, nothing good I mean) - and I went back to the default / start of 60.

I can relate to your frustration. You have described my problems exactly the only difference is that I am using Windows XP Multi-media hme. I too am using it on my older laptop with xp pro, works fine. My video card inside the desktop is Radeon X800XL on a super computer. Every once in a while I try to figure the problem out if I ever have any success I will let you know. Sorry I can't help you out right now but at least you know someone else is working on the problem also.

First of all, there is no way that you have 500gb of storage in your laptop, I believe that the biggest they make right now is 120gb, you must have an external hard drive (are you talking about your ram? 512mb?) Ok now, please tell us your specs on your laptop, I'm running on a laptop as well. Please go to start, all programs, accessories, system tools, then system information, expand components, click around and tell us what you exactly have. If that doesn't work right click my computer on your desktop and click properties, then click on the hardware tab, then click device manager and expand some of the components like processor, video, etc... Also, press ctrl alt delete and tell me how many processes you have running, it's at the bottom of that window. Now lets figure out the problem...
Good luck.

Matt

bdunsire,
I am sorry but I find your attitude to this problem a little unbelievable.

You say that you are well versed in handling computers but that your XP Pro system was never set up to be a games machine.

AFPD is fairly intensive on the graphics requirements and needs full OpenGL support with the correct spec card and fully updated drivers.

I take it that you are not that much into computer games? If you were then you would know that your 5200 card is woefully underpowered in a high end system and as I and others have tried to tell you, it is most likely this that is causing the problem. The fact that you have two screens set up is only dragging your card down further.

I run the occasional high-end game on my home system including Doom 3, Half Life 2, a couple of driving games etc and I can tell you for certainty that my otherwise stable system often suffers hanging, self-reboots and every other problem relating to locking up problem you can think of. It is the nature of high end graphic apps combined with varieties of hardware and drivers. I even had a problem where one of my office computers with microsoft Word was crashing with one particular document - finally the problem was solved with new drivers. Weird but true.

In a couple of your posts you have stated categorically that it is not a graphics problem but you have not stated why you believe this to be true. As I already advised you, when you read the troubleshooting advice at IPACS forum, the vast majority turn out to be graphic card issues.

If you are not prepared to accept the advice that several people have been trying to help you with then you really are NOT going to get this thing solved.

I had this topic notifying me of replies because I was interested to see if you would solve the problem but as of now, I am unsubscribing - its a waste of time.

I guess all my answers are running together now..

Matt - it does run just fine on my laptop - you're correct of course - 512MB not GB - sorry 'bout that, I guess I dumb thumbed it. But on the Laptop it runs fine.

Umm archibald - bye - I guess.. I guess you haven't actually been paying attention - I do know this system is NOT gaming optimised - I find it very unlikely that the software would run with a hung intro screen, if the hardware issue of my very limited graphics card was causing the problem - and I guess you never paid much attention to the 'official' patches target solutions - which caused my system to immediately fail??

I have ordered a new, and very powerful graphics card for this system - whatever software I end up with here will certainly run faster with a better card.

My big issue is not that problems exist, I fully understand how and why that occurs (lots of years doing this) - I just find it incredible that there is not any way to actually get support for a problem, and of course I am 'impressed' that this software actually kills XP pro..

I was / am just trying to get some software that I happen to think is pretty cool running on the system I bought it for - and along the way I discover this dirty little secret - that there is no support.. And people like archiebald don't like my attitude... because I ... I give up, I guess it is because I am still trying to get it to work without killing XP pro, or having a hung intro screen??

Life is too short .. (and I have cancer - again )

I should explain - not looking for sympathy at all..

9 months ago I finished chemo - 6 round of (5 days in hospital for each) - plus 3 surgeries (one really big) on my spine.. And yesterday, I found out the cancer is back again, and growing fast.. I'm fine with this - I will live for a while longer, and enjoy life as much as I can - heck I may live for years - but whatever, I will enjoy my time as much as I can and I will continue to have a good attitude..

This nonsense - people being rude because... well, I guess because they don't like that I publicly state my disappointment with the lack of support for this (good) product - I don't really care to participate..

If you want to attack me in private (still) that is fine, my email is easy to find, I actually see way more than a million visitors a month on my most popular web site, so I am very easy to find on the net..

If you want to berate me here - I don't care (never did) - but I won't play any more..

I too am done with this ..

Thanks (really) very much to all the people that have offered suggestions, and have tried to help - I will continue to play with the software, and at a minimum I do have quite a Windows system where I can use it.. And I will have (tomorrow) the high performance (they're pretty expensive!) card for this system, so something will be blindingly fast..!!

Cheers,
Bob

As folks following this know, I DID NOT buy the new video card expecting it to solve the problem (as mentioned, I was confident the problem was NOT the video card) - but here, and offline there were folks that seemed certain I was a nutter, and the only issue was the video card...

The new card is WAY faster, at a minimum it is 3 times the frame rate (ATI Radeon 9600 Pro with lots of memory) - but the AFPD problem is (of course) exactly the same - the Intro screen hangs, and then I have to move it an out of the way place, so I can start the software a second time, to use it on XP Pro.

The only other choice is to apply the 'fix' and have XP Pro crash immediately..

Wow..

I had a similar problem with Battlefield2. It worked well a few times, then got unstable 9 out of 10 times. Then finally crashed every time i started the program (while loading). Crash to desktop. I tried everything. Without any luck. All my other more graphics intensive games (Doom3, Americas Army, HalfLife2, Flight Simulator 2004) was working with no trouble whatsoever.

I was about to return the BF2 game to the shop, but tried one last thing --> a complete and clean reinstall of the operating system (WinXP Home SP2). After that everything worked flawlessly. No problems whatsoever after that clean reinstall. As a bonus, startup time was reduced significantly and everything else felt better.

It is a pain to do a clean reinstall, but in some cases it is absolutely worth it. If it is more than a year since last clean reinstall of your OS, I would consider doing it before giving up.

Yours Nixxon

BELOW IS WHAT I WENT THROUGH TO FIX MY PROBLEM WITH BF2:

Hello,

Sometimes the advanced features of the ATI Radeon series of video chipsets can cause issues with the game you may be experiencing. To disable these features please go over the following:

This issue can be avoided by setting the Wait for Vertical Sync to always off. To do this, follow these steps:

1. Right-Click on your desktop and select “Properties”.

2. Click on the “Settings” tab on the upper right of the display properties box.

3. Click on the “Advanced” button just below color quality.

4. Select the “ATI 3D tab”.

5. Click the “Use custom settings” check box. (Skip to 6 if a check mark is already displayed in the box.)

6. Click the “Custom button”. The ATI 3D Properties window will now displayed.

We will not set the Wait for Vertical Sync is now set to Off.

1. Set the Wait for Vertical Sync: to Always Off, by moving the slider all the way to the left

2. Click, Apply

3. Click, OK.

The Wait for Vertical Sync is now set to Off.

If the trouble continues, repeat these steps 1 – 6 and set Antialiasing and Anisotropic filtering to 2x

On the ATI 3D Properties page:

1. Uncheck Application Preference for Antialiasing and Anisotropic filtering

2. Set them both to 2x, by moving the slider all the way to the left

3. Click, Apply

4. Click, OK.

If for some reason you need to restore the defaults to these settings either because they did not work or they are affecting other games please follow these steps:

1. Follow steps 1-6 on the above to get to the appropriate screen.

2. Simply click the “Defaults” button in the bottom right of the properties window.

3. Click “Apply”, then “OK”.

Let us know if you need further assistance.

I have done the following changes in the registry (regarding optical drives). Still CTD.

Click the Start button, click Run.
In the Open box, type Regedit, and then click OK.
Click the plus sign (+) next to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE.

NOTE: When you click the plus sign (+) next to a folder, it will expand
displaying the folders it contains in the left-hand pane of the Registry Editor. When a folder is highlighted, its contents will be displayed in the right-hand pane of the Registry Editor.

Click the plus sign (+) next to SYSTEM.
Click the plus sign (+) next to CurrentControlSet.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Control.
Click the plus sign (+) next to Class.
Click {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}.
On the right side of the window, click UpperFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
On the right side of the window, click LowerFilters.
Click Edit on the menu bar.
Click Delete, and then click OK.
Click File, and then click Exit.
Restart the computer normally

I also updated the firmware for my CD/DVD drive without any luck.

I also tried running BF2 with no DeamonTools virtual drives activated + reboot. No difference, no luck...

L o o k i n g f o r w a r d t o t h e 1 . 3 patch ! ! !

I have also, as the game salesperson suggested, uninstalled my current video drivers and installed Catalyst 5.1 drivers. They are supposed to be the best regarding framerates and sturdyness. Still no help... CTD every time while loading.

He informed me that there is a new patch coming soon... Is this correct?
Customer 08/18/2005 12:22 PM
I checked BIOS, pressing F2 at startup, selected "Integrated Devices (LegacySelect Options)" --> "Primary VideoController". It was set to "AGP" and not the other option "Auto". This seems correct.

I tried turning Hyperthreading off in BIOS, but that did not make any difference.

BF2 still crashes to desktop on me

You wrote "...your new video card to function correctly"

I have not installed a new video card. The machine was delivered with the very same ATi Radeon 9800 Pro card that I use today...

I also believe that the only video ports on my computer are the 2 ports on the ATi Radeon 9800 Pro card.

There are a lot of video drivers in my system. How do I know which ones I can delete? And how do I find them all?
Response (Bret D.) 08/17/2005 01:15 PM
Hello,

Thank you for contacting EA technical support. I am sorry that you are having difficulty.

It is possible that your system has onboard video that might be conflicting with the game.

After looking over your system settings it seems that you have an onboard video chipset that was never disabled in your BIOS. You will need to disable this in order for the game and your new video card to function correctly. Some times people will recommend Loading your Windows Device manager and disabling the Onboard video chipset from there. This is NOT the proper way to disable an onboard video card. This step cannot be done inside Windows, it MUST be done in your system BIOS. If completed correctly, it should not even show up in your Windows Device Manager. You will want to contact your computer retailer for help with this step.

If this solved your issue, please update your incident and let us know. Your feedback is useful to us and the EA community.

I installed the newest ATi drivers (5-7_xp-2k_dd_cp_wdm_24085) and tried both "advanced" --> "drivers only" and "express install (recommended)".

I tried as is: no change in game behavior - crash to desktop while loading map.

I minimized every value in screen properties, 3D, "custom", se enclosured file # 7.

It still did not work any better. Even if I also minimized all values in video setup in BF2 to "low quality".

I have made a new DxDiag report, encl. # 8.

Maybe BF2 is not meant for my machine?
(I run BF1942, HL2, Americas Army, Wolfenstein ET etc. in highest quality modes (1280x1024 32BPP) without any problems. Doom3 I had to return to the shop due to in game crashes every now and then)

Any more clues? Does the DxDiag report look good now?
Response (Ariel Y.) 08/16/2005 12:29 PM
Hello,

Thank you for contacting EA technical support. I am sorry that you are having difficulty.

I have looked over the system information included with your email and it appears that you are in need of an updated driver for your video card. Go to the following website and follow the simple instructions to download the latest drivers. The following instructions are solely provided as a general guide as each manufacturer may utilize a different method for installation.

Your video card driver can be obtained by taking the following steps:
1. Go to: http://mirror.ati.com/support/driver.html
2. Click on Drivers and Software on the left hand column (if you do not see a + sign in front you should see the nest step below)
3. Click on your Operating System (again if you do no have a + sign scroll down to find out Operating System)
4. Click on your Video card type
5. The Right Pane refreshes to give you the current drivers for your video card.
6. Click on "Download".
7. Click on "Save"
8. Set the drop down box next to Save in to Desktop and click the "Save" button.
9. The file that has been copied to your desktop is a self extracting executable, meaning you should be able to double click on it and follow the directions to install it. It is normal to have to restart your computer after this is complete.

If you need a previous driver, click on “Previous Drivers and Software”
Customer 08/15/2005 02:24 PM
What is the correct link to submit to ATi or Dell for access to this very error history / troubleshooting log?
Customer 08/15/2005 02:23 PM
I have made a new DxDiag test with all possible tests executed successfully, see encl # 5
I also have run an ATi error tester (AtiInsp.exe) with an enclosed report, encl # 6

Is the DxDiag report more complete and comprehensive now?
Does the "ATi error report.txt" enlight anything?
Should I contact ATi and report the problem?

Yours Nicolai F.
