Hello all, I am thinking about getting into the "BIG" birds but I don't want to drop a ton of money into it. I am thinking about building a Four Star 120 kit. From everything I have read on here I think I want to put a G2300 in it and put a smoke tap on the muffler. Anyone think this would be a good set up? Anyone ever heard of a 2300 with a smoke system on it. I really want to get a big bird in the air and I don't need a giant scale Extra with a 100cc gasser and smoke system and a thousand dollars worth of digital servos on it. Just plain old big scale, easy to fly, fun with smoke behind it. Any suggestions would be most appreciated. Thanks a lot guys- Jon

I have my 2300 on a Goldberg Sukhoi, but if I ever lose it, I may go the 4* 120 route. My decision for a plane was between those two. I think it would be a great combination, and the fact that the 4* has the engine uncowled and a very big wing makes it a good plane to break in the engine on. It will take lots of run time to get it right, but it is well worth the effort. As for the smoke? I don't know if the engine will produce enough heat to get good smoke. You will be flying at very low throttle settings unless you go with a flat pitch prop. I have mine propped to peak out at 9500, which is what a Saito 180 will do on the same prop. You will absolutely love the sound if you use a Slimline Pitts muffler, but I don't think you'll need one with that plane.

If smoke is really important to you, avoid glow and go gas/spark. Much, much better smoke.

The G26 is a great engine on the model you are considering, as is the SV26 for half the price, but with a few worrisome aspects that the G26 lacks.

Jon, you don't have to go 100cc to get into gassers, the best class is the 50cc anyways. I would love to get into 50cc gassers but I just cant get that size to fit in my truck, I have to keep my planes in the 70" wing span size for transport. This leaves the 26cc-36cc engines which seem to be getting better an better.

P.S. the 26cc gassers and the super tiger 2300 seem to be around the same in power with the glow engine having the weight advantage, gas being cheaper to operate and more reliable.
