I've gotten a bit confused with the set up of my Eclipse 7. I've changed a few things with my Eco8, and decided to get out of "beginner" mode. I want to set up as things should be, but I'm a bit confused about how to use the "idle up", "throttle hold", and gyro rate settings. These settings all seem to be tied to one switch (flight mode) on my Eclipse 7, which is confusing. Then of course there is the "flight condition" switch on the left of the transmitter......

You have 4 different flight modes.
Nor, ST1, ST2, ST3.

As far as my understanding of it goes, NOR is meant for normal flying and start up sequence. ST 1 and 2 are basically the same in that they're idle up (or stunt mode as hitec refers to it).

When you're programming things like pitch curve or throttle curve, you simply need to select the flight mode you want the settings to affect. E.g. If you're setting pitch curve for ST1, you'd switch the left flight mode switch to it's second position. If you were in the pitch curve setting menu, it shows you at the bottom right which flight mode you're in (nor or ST1/2/3). When you switch flight mode, everything can be reset for each flight mode (so you can have totally seperate values for gyro gain, throttle hold, throttle curve, pitch curve, trim settings, etc. for each flight mode).

For example, in my case, on my eco-8. With the left switch in it's upper most position (normal mode) my heli has a linear throttle curve for start up. I've got the curve set so that my blades will reach near full rotational RPM to match my throttle curve in st1 (to help prevent throttle jumps as I switch between the two) at mid-stick while my pitch curve will have my blades at 0 pitch. At this point, I switch over to ST1, where the blades will now move to their full rpm setting for that particular mode. (In my case, mid stick is set to 80% throttle) and my pitch curve moves to allow me to have negative and positive pitch values in both directions. This is all setup before hand of course with a pitch guage at home .

Basically, everything is just like setting it up in NOR mode, only you'll have very different settings most of the time.
Also, each flight mode takes precedence over the last. If you're in ST1 and you engage ST2, all settings for ST1 and below are overridden by ST2.

ST3 is meant for auto-rotations, which is activated using the Flt. Cond button on the right side. ST3 is linked to the throttle hold command. ST3 will seperate the throttle and set it to a pre-determined value (In an electric heli's case, this will be 0 throttle all around, for nitro birds, you can adjust it to set it so the motor continues to idle without engaging the clutch).

Hope that makes some sense to you!

What I've been trying to do - this may be my problem - is to use that right switch to stop the motor in the forward position, and spool up the motor in the rear position. However, flipping this switch takes me from "Normal" on the left flight condition switch into "ST3". Is this correct?

I guess I need to bone up a bit more, the light just hasn't come on for me yet. "ST3" or right switch forward is 0 throttle. Right switch back takes me to "Normal" where I spool up, then I need to switch to "ST1" and/or "ST2" to actually fly the helicopter. Correct?

Correct. ST3 will kill your throttle. It's meant for incase you crash (in idle up mode, it allows you to cut throttle to minimize damage) or if you just enjoy practicing no-power auto-rotations.

ST1 and ST2 are meant for flight. Norm is meant for startup and basic hovering/tweaking settings, etc.

Basically, leave your normal settings as they are, then switch the left switch into it's second position (ST1), now you can reset all your pitch/throttle curves to new values.

Typically, throttle will be something like 100 90 80 90 100 and then pitch curve is set to whatever works for your pitch range and what you're trying to accomplish.

EDIT: Forgot to add, when you switch modes, it will copy your previous settings into the new mode to aid in some of the setup as many of the settings won't change. It's easier than having to reset every thing.

Thanks again Credence, you are a wealth of knowledge! Seems like everytime I have a half-baked question, you have an answer! Now I'm ready to run home and get it in the air again! This has been like opening a can of worms! I'm ready to try some serious forward flight and needed to switch out of Normal or "beginner" mode. (Heli keeps dropping when I work the controls, so I need a constant motor speed)

BTW - I bought the 120 degree swash for the Eco8. So far so good, but I'm thinking about ording the servo relocation brackets from fxaeromodels to get that weird angle out of the control rods.

Hey, no problem, knowledge is useless if you can't share it!

As for the servo brackets, definately a good idea. Those wierd angles on the swash will really cause you havoc in trying to get balanced control out of your cyclic response. I know some people fly using the standard mounts, but I don't think it's a good idea.
