I am not aware of the weight limit being removed, did I miss something? I knew it was going to be brought up, but I hadn't heard if it had passed. is this just a rumor or something for sure? If for sure, got a link or something? because it's huge news.

With the new ZDZ, even with the limit in place this plane can be made legal, with some to spare. I'm so confident I'm going to prove it

Almost done painting, gotta clear one plane and 2 more canopies. Jeez but these things are looking good!

Mike,

I read it here at RCU on the weight limit, I think you are right on the issue being discussed, but I remember that it will be introduced for 2007....but I might be wrong. I'll try to look for the link again.

Yeah, its huge...but someone must actually win with such combo before it catches fire...

regards

Hi Mike
I 'm very impressed by what you do. Awesome construction of plane.
I heard news about ZDZ 40 RE F3A 'll release on april and it weight 'll 1100 g (38,8 oz)
instead of 1300 g (45,86 oz). Have you some information about this new ZDZ ?
Claude

I think the weight issue has only been discussed. Nothing has passed as of yet. I can say with reasonable certainty that if it had passed it would've been out on the NSRCA email list rather quickly and would've been discussed thoroughly all winter. I think this is just in discussion phases as of now.

Sneak peeks of my new weapons for 2006. This camera is doing some funky stuff to the images, it doesn't look exactly like this in person.

But, enjoy.....huge update coming VERY soon now.

Tommy, short kits are available now. See www.customairframes.com for details.

More complete kits are in the works, but it's a little ways off.

Yep I'll have both of mine at Ocala, and hopefully Emory will have at least one of his electrics there too.

Funny thing about those fishnets...you should have seen me in Walmart picking them out....."those are too small, where's the Bertha size???" hehehehehe. I got some odd looks from the Walmart shoppers.

Been following your threads for a long time Mike, like most of the pattern community here on RCU. Beautiful airplane... no kidding, would love to see one fly (may have to build one anyway ).

I especially love the one picture of the nose where you can see the cigarrette packs, asprin, meds, cough medicine... just how much has this plane taken out of you man??? lol

I fly electric, and would be very interested to know what weights your Pletty powered versions come in at. My motor of choice weighs a bit more than either the Hacker or Pletty so it is of concern.

Beautiful plane man, keep up the good work!

Hey Tom,

After I get the planes from Mike, I will get everything installed and probably put a new thread on the electric pattern forum. I'll get some pictures, list what is installed and give the weight. I can't wait to get these planes. Mike is an exceptional builder.

Mike,
I am a pretty good builder but I haven't been in the hobby for to long. Is there a chance you could do up an approx. list of the wood sizes and types and amounts need to complete the airplane? I have always wanted to build a plane from scratch but don't have the experience in knowing one type of contest balsa from another or what type of ply is needed for the formers. Thanks for your time.

Hi Michael

On page one of this thread is a complete list of materials required

But here they are anyway

30-32pieces> 1/16x4x36
6-8pieces> 1/8x4x36
1pieces> 1/2x4x36
2pieces> 1x4x36
1pieces> 3/8x4x36
1pieces> 1/4x4x36

12pieces>14 1/4 square x 36

4pieces> 1/8 x 12 x 24 lite ply
1pieces> 1/8 x 12 x 6 A/C ply
1pieces> 1/4 x 12 x 6 A/C ply

4pieces> 1/8 x 3/8 x 36 spruce (spars)

strip of .007 carbon ribbon

7/8x30" PBG C/F wing tube and socket

7/16x12" PBG stab tube

Set of Gator (or equivalent) wing adjusters (4 total)

Set of Gator (or equivalent) stab adjusters

Landing gear of choice

Engine/motor mount
*NOTE* The cowl on this plane is made light. Do not mount a nose ring to this cowl unless you add a reinforcement strip of 4 oz glass or 2.5 oz carbon weave. ESPECIALLY if you intend on using a 4 stroke. I suggest using the Hyde ARAI(S) or a mount. You can use an ARA or Budd mount, but realize you will have to add some strength to the cowl to support it. An OS 140 for instance probably wouldn't give you any trouble, but if a DZ kicked back hard, it could turn your nose into confetti if you don't use reinforcement.

Set of large scale radio south hinges

Various hardware of your choice; keep it light.

Troy,
Thanks so much. I either must of missed that or I had a brain fart. Thanks for pointing that out.

Should all the balsa be contest grade? If so what type?

It depends on what flavor you're building. Glow, you can just use good quality 4-6 lb balsa. If you use a YS, you may want to use a little denser wood for the tail post, and stiff 1/4" cross braces for the rear fuse.

If you want electric, the wood need to be hand picked. The lightest you can find. In either case, you need light 1/16" for all of the sheeting, and use a good quality laminating resin spread thin to keep the weight down. it's not necessarily hard or expensive, but does require that you pay attention. This is a BIG plane. I can't forsee one coming out over 11 lbs unless you use a lot of epoxy and wood better suited to building houses.

BTW these electrics I'm building for Emory are looking sweet, the weight is ridiculously low. I'd hate to venture a guess right now, but I know they'll be well under 11 lbs with Tanic packs (3 lbs). With the newer TP packs, this plane could easily be 10.25 or less. And mind you this is with a glassed and painted fuse.

Stay tuned, it's all unfolding in the next week.

-Mike

Mike,
I am really interested in building one for the new ZDZ 40 F3A coming out. What would your wood recommendations be for that combo? The same as say a DZ?

Yep, but as far as the sheeting, same as electric...LIGHT. Use contest balsa for everything, just use C grain and make sure it's stiff and not brittle.

I'll probably build one along with ya
