FE_Chris -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 1:10:02 AM)

It started after the 1st tank. I think It may be an air leak. I am going to pull the engine in the next couple days and seal it with RTV just to make sure. It cannot be leaking that bad....cause the temps are not going crazy. Heck I dunno. I am just glad I do not have the same probs as elite did with the oil everywhere.

Spac, sounds like your is buzzing a bit too??? Have you sealed the carb and back plate?

I also was looking at tiger drives, I wonder if anyone knows if this engine has an external one-way bearing. I know I will find out when I take it off, but I thaught it someone knew then I could just get the TD and install it while everything is out at once.

ynot1 -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 1:14:09 AM)

Check out part number LXJUK6 in Tower Hobbies for a body for the Warhead.
I don't know how to send a link!

I would like part number LXDVJ8 but I don't think it will fit ???

spacoli -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 1:18:59 AM)

Thanks, That makes since. Is it safe to say that after break in when I start tolean it out, most of the excess oil at the ehaust port will disapear.

I have been a little leary to lean it out too much during break in,it's been cold 40 when I run it, i have read that you need a richer needle to run in colder weather. The motor is responding well through out the throttle.

I have been running it with my son (it's his truck), he has a lead figner and has punched it from a stand still and it ripped away in a heart beat with no hesitation. Now I'm new to this and don't have anything to compare it to, but I think brake in is going well and the motor is showing progress every time we run it. I'm also getting alittle better tuning it as I go.

I think the top end need some work yet, I think? The next couple tanks will tell what the truck cna do. The weather does not look good for this week, so it may be a week or so till i get any more progress posted.

spacoli -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 1:29:19 AM)

No i have not sealed anything.
I have read about it and it seems easy. I'm really not familiar with Rc that much. The whole thing looks intimitidaing.

I have been looking it over and don't know what screw or bolt to take out first. I guess it's just trial and error. I have read that the modular design is easy to work on once you know what order to do it in.

As for the external oneway bearing I have heard a click sound while turning the flywheel, I thought that;s what the click was from(I don't know). It might sound like is is external. Why do you ask about the oneway bearing?

FE_Chris -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 1:34:08 AM)

I ask about the bearing because the tiger drive is setup to use an external one way bearing....Or rather a engine with a output shaft that uses an external one way bearing on the back. If it has an internal bearing the Tiger drive will not work.

Incase you do not know...A Tiger Drive is a 25$ replacement for the pullstart. It is a couple of gears and on the top there is an input for a shaft. You use the shaft in a drill (MUST have a clutch on the drill or else you can Eff up the motor) to spin the engine. It's way better than worrying about the pull start breaking, I love it on my mayhem ST. I will have to look too and see if the chassis will have room for this also. But I cannot look right now, I left the truck at work [:D]

spv1425 -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 1:39:55 AM)

Why not just get a starter box? That's one of the big advantages of this truck over others, it's bump start capable.

spacoli -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 1:45:19 AM)

There is a oneway bearing listed on the exploded veiw parts list. Page 5 part #19.
Here's the link to download the pdf file.
http://www.warheadmt.com/dtxd68-downloads.html

It's back at the pullstart, so your probably in luck. I like the sound of that starter thing.
Where can I get one?

FE_Chris -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 2:05:15 AM)

Tower has them. Follow my link below.

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/wti0001p?&I=LXGFK2&P=7

I looked at the part scematic, of course mine is at work too, so thanks for the link.

We are in luck!!! It has an external one-way bearing!!!! Whew-Hew!!!

I would use a starter box, but I already have to lug my drill around for my Mayhem ST, and this TD is only 22 bucks and a good starter box start at around 100 I do believe.

Check it out.

Also spac, your gonna have to seal the engine at one point or another. It's easy, just take your time and keep a clean surface when working on the engine.

Also, any of you temp your engines?? what are you running at consistently??? During breakin I have been running around 170-210. Heat Cycle method is what I am using.

spacoli -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 2:23:09 AM)

Thanks for the link. I have been watching my temp thoughout breakin. Me being rookie my temps have been up and down. I had it realy hot when I first run it. But since then I have controled the temps in the 220 -280 range. When I notice it gets that hot I shut it down at BDC. I try to keep it around 230 and it's been consitant at times. I have only been doing 3 minute runs and then letting it cool down to around 100. We have been running it up and down a parking lot and everyother pass we would temp it. If the temps were good we would run it for a couple of minutes, then bring it in to cool down to 100.

RCadmin -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 2:36:53 AM)

RCU should have a full in-depth review w/pics and video of the warhead up in around a week or so..stay tuned!

Hey... this looks like my helicopter starter would work with this thing. Cooool!!! Now just which one to get.. hehe.

Wide Open -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 4:08:08 AM)

spacoli, that clicking you mentioned is just a mecanism inside the engine that engages or disengages the pullstart. its just a simple pin and spring. also, i have found that this engine loves to be run at around 250 to 270 degrees. so far thats been its sweet spot. just remember that each engine is different and you shouldnt tune for a "magic" number.

EDIT: i have some pretty sweet warhead pics in my gallery if you want to see them!

lukskywalker -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 4:11:37 AM)

So let me get this right, if I order this part this will eliminate the starter box which is alot more $$$. Going to order my warhead this week. Please let me know. Thx

FE_Chris -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 5:23:23 AM)

Dude, I have to look on my WH tomorrow as it is not with me right now. I want to place an order with tower for WH parts tonight, but I would like to have that in the order and I wanna make sure the tiger drive will work with my setup Check back and i'll let you know if it will fit. I think it will. All you need is a little clearance in the back and room enough to shove a small shaft down with the drill to rotate the starter. Stay tuned as the RC admins would say!!! [:D]

BTW: We have 8mm Shafts right? Maybe someone that has there engine out could measure it up real quick. I am talking about the shaft that comes out of the back of the engine. it would go into the pullstart and the one way bearing would sit on it, inside the pull start. Just to clarify. 8mm check it out for us, thanks!!! This post rocks!!

jbrad65 -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 5:25:13 AM)

Hey guys I just got a Warhead last week. First three pulls from the pull start and it broke. But I starter boxed it and it has had a few bugs. Here are some of the things I have been dealing with, I keep running too hot. (Got it rich as it will stand). Fuel line leak. And big problem is the carb just sits kind of loosely on the engine.(Tried to tighten but no go) Iam sure that is causing a "lean" condition, Therefore that could be a coulpret with overheating. I also have those black specs it is defintlry the spur gear had to order 2 today. I have changed the body and radio to FM also went to a rechargeable batt. reciever pack (1400ma). I am not downing this truck because it has great potential! But there are some things that need attention. Another one is throttle linkage it seems to rub the gas tank and carb. Not sure what needs to be done to fix that. Well anyway does anyone have any advise on my overheating and carb problem. Maybe I should just replace engine with An OS, Surefire, or Trinty. What do you guys think. I just would like to get it running to play in the yard with. [8D]

Wide Open -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 5:42:11 AM)

the super tiger in mine has been great. id say give it about a gallon or so to settle down. i have a gallon and a half through mine and it finally settled to temps in the 250 degree range.

FE_Chris -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 12:27:22 PM)

That rocks, I hope so....seems to be a good engine...the more I run it the better it is. Gotta go to work fellas, i'll post back tonight with my thaughts on the tiger drive after I check out the WH.

dpatino -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 2:44:22 PM)

Is there a different number for DuraTrax support than the Hobby Services in the manual? I called and asked them about my engine, and was told to just send it in with a copy of the receipt and a letter explaining the problem. Didn't seem too interested in what was wrong. Also said that it'd probably be about 2 and a half weeks before I got it back... this blows big time. Brand new truck, only 3 tanks of fuel, and now I'm without it for 2 and a half weeks? Not a happy camper at all.

dpatino -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 3:12:42 PM)

Whale poop.

My spun rod bearing problem could have been caused by running the engine up without a sufficient load on it, couldn't it?

The more experienced guy I got to help me is an airplane guy... He's offered to pay for repairs to it.

so now I'm looking at replacing the connecting rod myself. only about $18 from tower, and I've already ordered a new pull start.

However now I have a new problem :( Dummy me was using a ball end wrench to remove the bolts from the head. 3 came out fine. The forth didn't. My ball end wrench's ball end broke off in the bolt. Anyone know of a way of getting it out of there? I need to make sure all I need to replacing is the rod.

And oh, hey! I think I just found what the flaking is from. I removed the clutch housing, and it looks like it's coming from either the shoes themselves, or the lining of the housing.. I'll get pics in a sec.

dpatino -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 3:37:59 PM)

Here's a picture of my clutch with the flaking stuff on it. Same stuff you guys are talking about? Looks like it originated from here, not just blew in or something.

Bill Plude -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 3:41:38 PM)

If you have a Dremel or other rotory tool, put a "cut off" disk in it, cut straight across the center of the bolt & you make it slotted and use a screwdriver to get it out. Works great when you round off the phillips screws too [:D]

dpatino -> RE: Anyone own a Warhead (1/3/2006 4:14:55 PM)

I've done that before, except this is one of the bolts that holds the head on. You can't get to it with a dremel because of the cooling fins.

Just keep in mind, it's a new truck, and we're learning its quirks.

My engine did NOT die because of being bad from the factory. It died because of head up rear end syndrome on my part. Only other thing I see on here about it is the plastic parts are easy to break in below freezing weather, but what plastic parts aren't??
