If anyone cares ... after months of neglect, I finally got my evolution 46 to run correctly. I found a pin **** hole in the fuel line and tightned the stopper in the fuel tank and magic ... nice, strong, smooth operation again.

I'm putting floats on my Alpha and going boating ... sort'a ...

Cheers!

I also have a Hangar 9 alpha , and I have been contemplating on adding floats. But I do not have a clue on how to begin. I would appreciate any and all info.

11X6 Zinger, I left the flywheel on, and I have lost count of the number of flights. Last two flights were in an extreme downpour.
Still starts and runs very well. I grab the spinner, and just give it a quick twist backward against the compression. No fingers in the prop.

Okay, I went to my LHS yesterday to pick up a reciever, and he has THREE brand new Evolution engines in the display case. There are three versions of this engine:

1. The Evolution trainer system, which is the one that comes with the Alpha trainer. The engine by itself comes with the flywheel and three blade Evolution prop.

2. The Evolution .46, which appears to be the same engine as the one above, but WITHOUT the flywheel and three blade prop.

3. The Evolution .61, which is bigger, and has no flywheel or prop.

I have read several complaints about the performance of the engine with the thre blade prop. Fact is guys, that system was not designed for stellar performance. The prop is designed for low noise, and slow speeds, so a trainer is easy to handle. If you take the Alpha, or any other trainer with the Evolution trainer engine and three blade prop on it, and put it in a dive, you will notice that the plane doesnt gain any airspeed. This is the whole point of that system, to have a no frills engine and prop that will keep the trainer at slow speeds so a beginner can keep on top of things. the guy at the shop tells me he is running one of the new .61 engines, and it has rivaled or beaten any other .61 he has run in its class. I havent seen it fly, but several of the guys in his club are saying the same thing.

You young engine men put this in your gray matter memory cells ! Some time down the road this engine will be a collectors item . If you can afford it buy one & put it away . I wasn't smart years back & missed my chances to buy engines that have greatly increased in value. Got to be better than ENRON stock ! MAX H.

Max, I'm just curious as to why this thing might be a collectors item. I know it's a neat looking engine and I suspect it's a good engine. I'm like lowlevel, I've seen guys on here who just don't get the concept of the .46 on the trainer system, in the simplest terms, it's supposed to run nice and fly nice. You don't buy that plane and engine to 3D.

tell ya what folks,i used an alpha trainer to learn, and i have purchased a couple of them that were destroyed in crashes,i have used the evo .46 on a couple other planes,a balsa usa phaeton2,and a sig smith miniplane, and got one on a WM P-51,my point....... take off the flywheel, press out the prop hub,put on the hobbico/tower .46 tuned muffler,or a pitts muffler ,put on an 11x6 apc,and enjoy. and, even though it will stir a stink,i will put any one of my evo .46's against an o.s. 46fx any time! they are very powerful and cheap to boot! later

Anybody using the .61 Evo? I was thinking of putting it in a Sig 4Star 60. I have the Extra Easy2 with the Evo .46, starts easy, no hassles works well ( I am a newbie, need simple things at this point ). Thanks

Michael

hobbsy: I think it will make the grade due to it's unique looks & what will be it's low volume of manufacture. We both know the sales will not match those of the larger manufactures. I have one located on the special dealers display stand & that should help it more yet. MAX H.

Any engine that emerges into this world sporting a DA (duck's ass) hairdo has earned it rightful place into the world of collectorship. This just might catch on with the teens as Honda's have.

You must be talking about those Hondas those kids buy for $16,000.00 and then spend $12,000.00 more for hotrod stuff so it will run as good as a $1,000. Chevy.

Danny03,

I did the floats this weekend and have the following advice.

1. Do a search for Jim Casey here at RC Universe and check out his links for setting up planes for floats.
2. Following his advice and buy or build a set of floam floats. Pay attention to the details a set them up according to his instructions.
3. Have an experienced seaplane pilot take it off and reset the trims for you.
4. Have fun.

The Alpha handled the floats fine and took off and landed just fine. The Evolution 46 was easily up to the task. I was using a 10x6 Master Airscrew prop.

Well, just put a brand spankin' new Evo .46 on my Kadet LT40 taildragger. Fired it up last night, and it runs like a charm. Very smooth transition, and plenty of thrust with an 11x7.5 wood powerpoint prop. I did have to adjust the limiter on the low speed needle though, as I couldnt get it leaned out enough with the stock setting. Other than that, I had no problems. I fueled it, put the heat to the glow plug, and it fired up and ran on the first try with the starter. I wont get to fly it until Sunday afternoon, but I can already tell it is going to be a winner. Next to the little old Webra .40 I did have on the nose, this thing looks huge!! I'm thinkin' about ordering the Evo .61 for a 4 Star .60 project I just bought.
