well I got to maiden mine over the weekend. Had a heck of a time getting the zdz 80 to start, I must have flipped it a hundred times. when I finally got it started, it ran rich but very powerful. the first flights were just taking it easyto get the engine running and trimming etc, when I got warmed up it flew like a dream, so stable and light on the wing. I did some smooth rolling circles, some great knife edge with 0 coupling, perfect, just alot of pattern stuff I can honestly say this is the best flying plane I've ever flown, and it looks so awesome. I can't wait till the engine gets broken in and I can do some 3-d

I have something that you can try. Both my new ZDZ 50's were a beeotch to start until I did one simple thing: leave the choke on partially for the first start. After it's running a few seconds take the choke off and goose the throttle. Starts the first time every time now. Make sure to have the choke just cracked, almost full choke but enough air that it can keep running rich. It works freeking awesome dude.

thanks, I'll try that next time, it gets a little easier to start every timeit's only been flown about 5 times so I'm gonna go this weekend and fly the crap out of it! I've got my choke on a servo so I can just sub trim it to open partially, thanks, phil

Ive got the same set up with the same problem. make sure the choke is fully closed, even a little crack will make this thing really hard to start. mine starts on 6th flip now

I've flown my yak about 6 times now, and love it!, this zdz super 80 is a super pain in the ass though, every time I go to the field it's flip, flip flip, flipflipflip, choke on, choke, off, choke cracked, recommended starting procedure from manual, doesn't matter, it 's just a bear to start, and after I get it going, and after my flight I come in , wait 15 min, then it won't start at all. Maybe my ignition battery isn't large enough , I'm gonn a try a lipo setup with 2100 maand reg, and see if that helps, I hope it gets better when it's fully broken in. I'm just on my second gallon so I'm not too worried yet.

Pliebo. I have another manufacturer's engine that gave a similar problem. For me it turned out to be the low end needle was too lean.
Have you tried wide open throttle when choking it for the first time of the day? Please make sure that you have the airplane secured. (best with a friend)
Unless your battery is really small capacity I don't know that it will cause trouble on the start up. Battery capicity will come into play when running full throttle as the more rpm means more sparks discharged in a period of time.
Take a look at this guy's recommendations. I have not tried it yet but do know Pei knows his stuff.

I will reply to this because I just had the same problem over the weekend. I was breaking in a new ZDZ "first time out" and it was doing exactly what you were experiencing. Hard to start....and if it quit or was shut off....you would have to wait for a bit till the engine could be restarted. What I found was that the top end was too rich and the bottom was too lean. I was so frustrated at that point I just reset the needles to factory specs and it runs great now. 1 1/2 turn on the top and bottom. It's good enough to fly for break in and I will slowly tweak them to get the optimal setup. There is one thing to try though. After you shut it off....follow this procedure.

Ignition off
choke off
full throttle
flip the engine 20 to 30 times
leave the choke off
ignition on
it should start within a few flips.

What I found was happening is that upon shutdown the engine was flooding itself and by following the procedure above would help clear it out. But.....since I reset my needles and started from scratch....it starts and runs great now....albeit very rich.

thanks guys that makes me feel better that I'm not the only one. I think my low needle might be too lean also, I think I'll try the factory settings too. couldn't hurt and at least I can see where I am as opposed to where the factory settings are. I changed my battery to a 2300 ma lipo on a 6v regulator, and we'll see what happens. Phil

okay, I just started it, wasn't too bad this time, I richened my bottom end a little, and within about 20 flips I had it going. man, this thing is a real powerhouse when it runs! thanks for the help, Phil

You said your running a ZDZ RV-J right? You are not supposed to run a regulated pack on that ignition. It is made to accept a 2 cell lith pack directly into it.

I'm glad to hear it's running better, but it still should not take 20 flips to get it running. At a absolute max, 5 to 10 on choke to fire, then no more than 5 to 10 unchoked to run.

Here is the sequence I use to start

Ignition on, choke on
flip till it pops
unchoke
flip till running

This is done with the throttle at a idle setting. I check you needles. How many turn out are you on the top and bottom end?

you mean I can run a 2 cell lipo right into the ignition without a reg? I can't find my home made long & skinny screwdriver right now to check my needles but I think I started at factory settings then leaned out about 1/4 turn on each I think it'll get better as I get it broken in more, I think I didn't have enough voltage going into the ignituion, cause I only had a 4.8 volt 1100 ma batt on it.

I'm thinking about doing a smoke system on my yak, I have the pump and my muffler has a smoke fitting on it. has anyone had much experience with this? I need to know how to hook it up.
