i have a question about the top plate for the engine box, do you think it would be okay to cut it short from the front, like back to the 1st notch or so? i need access to my mixture screws, and i was thinking then i could get at my motor bolts easier too, i have lock nuts so need to get inside incase changing thrust or whatever, i will have 3 "U" shaped notches, 2 for the bolts and one for the carb settings, or just cut the entire thing about 2 inches or so back, i am thinking it would still be strong cause the main firewall it self is right there, and most of the side support would be there middle to back, make any sense??, i could cut notches in the side panels instead for bolt access, but the top need to be cut either way for cabr adj., thought about glueing some rails in and screwing it in place, but i think epoxing in is stronger, even with some cut away, any thoughts??

diamonddave all you have to do once you are ready to put the top firewall on is cut a square right above your carburator about 3 inches each way. or whatever you feel necessary

Does anyone has mount a DA 85 on a Yak 33%?.

Yes Sir!

Four of us in our club bought these great birds with DA 85's shortly after Toledo. I was the first to get mine flying about a month ago.

FYI, I have some photos of my build in a zip file for anyone interested:

http://tufflight.com/yak/mine.zip

I didn't just want to barge into this thread and flood with pics, but I can post some here also.

This was my first real giant scale bird (gasser) so I made a few mistakes on her, but I'm now getting to the point where I can fly her and nothing gets loose or needs adjustment.

BTW, this thread was very helpful in doing my build. Thanks a lot for the info.

Joe

yeh thats kind what i am thinking, i know this plate dosnt need to be solid, a buddy of mine thats been building for almost as long as i have been alive(so i trust his input) said if i wanted to i could use a hole saw or something and cut some pretty big holes in the top and sides to lighten it up, i dont know how much youd loose in the way of weight doing so, but i feel comfortable hacking some away to gain acces to my bolts, carb, and throttle linkage
btw, decided not to add any more right thrust yet, i will wait and try it as is, plus the washers i had werent big enough, they would have crushed in and not changed things much anyway, so we will see, we back to work

diamonddave i wouldnt cut anymore holes than you have to. the box is pretty light and with a big 80 or 85 will make alot of vibrations. you need to secure that box as best you can. in my first one i made mistakes and my box broke. if you guys are goin to do hard 3d PLEASE PLEASE make sure you put a brass extension on your gas tank so your clunk doesnt turn around and you deadstick. i lost my first sd yak to this two weeks ago. i already got a second one and im in the process of building.
