Columbo -> Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/16/2005 1:40:06 PM)

Sammy has informed me that my 33% Yak has arrived and ready to be shipped.
Unfortunately, I will be away on vacation the next couple weeks. I will start the build
thread here when I return the first week in January. I have attached some pictures
of the plane before it left the factory. I will take more when it arrives. The cowl was
left unpainted (I will be doing a custom paint scheme). However, the production batch
will have painted cowls.

Sweet..what engine do you plan on using

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/16/2005 3:15:36 PM)

I will be using the new 3W80 Xi. I ordered one from my LHS about
3 weeks ago. I called Aircraft international, and they are now on
backorder until mid January.

SpaceW -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/17/2005 12:24:46 AM)

What is this scheme? Is it red or orange?

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/17/2005 2:46:45 AM)

It looks orange in the photos, but it is actually red.

SpaceW -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/17/2005 7:18:33 PM)

Thank you. You have understood why i was asking about the color. But ok red is better I think.
Do you what hardware is coming with the plane? Are there wing, stab bags? Are the wing and stab tubes made with CF? what about the tailwheel?

cope -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/17/2005 7:37:33 PM)

I have one on order space w there are no wing or stab bags Ihave a 30% yak and 30% edge from aviation models and used most of the hardware on both planes the wing tubes are not cf Sammy is very helpful and his planes flyand go together very well hope this helps

SpaceW -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/17/2005 7:49:42 PM)

How is the stab fixed to the fused? I can't see how does it work on pics.

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/17/2005 10:41:24 PM)

The stabs use a tube. There are screws that secure the horizontal stab in place.
This makes the stabs removable if necessary for transporting. I will be leaving
for vacation Sunday the 18th. I will post plenty of pictures when I return the first
week in January.

erjpilot -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/18/2005 12:41:33 PM)

Does anyone know if the elevator servos mount in the stabs or in the side of the fuse?
Thanks, Travis

pferg -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/20/2005 4:58:50 AM)

I have one also. The servos mount in the stabs. They included extended servo arms for these with the plane. If you go to their website you can download the manual which has photos of the stab.

jrjohn -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/23/2005 5:48:45 AM)

Does anybody actually have this plane yet? if so I'd love to see some pictures. Do the wings recess into the side of the fus. (thus a round fus instead of a flat none scale one like aeroworks is building) I have a 3W75IUS looking for a home. This could be the plane. Currently fly and 87" EF Yak. Love it. Hope they are built in the same factory as the EF yak

jrjohn -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/23/2005 5:53:56 AM)

I recieved an e-mail from Sammy today with the specs. He said the wing area was 1755 sq " I just looked at the website and they list the wing area at 1540 sq " I hope the 1540 is a mistake and it's really 1755

John

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/23/2005 3:40:17 PM)

The 33% Yak is a downsized version of the 37.5% Yak which means the construction is
the same, but the plane is just smaller. I attached a couple pictures of the 33% Yak fueselage.
One is covered and the other is not. You can see the fuselage is round with wings that recess
into the fuselage.

The 1540 sq in of wing area is a mistake. The 30% has 1411 sq in of wing area, so the 1540 for
a 33% cannot be right with a wingspan of 95 in. The 1755 sq inches is the wing area given to me
by Sammy when I first inquired about the plane.

Since this plane is very similar to the 37.5 Yak, a read of the 37.5 Yak build thread might be a good
idea. Here is the link:

I am typing this from my mom's computer in Chattanooga TN. Hope everyone is having a nice holiday.
I sure am.

Greg, The construction looks very simular to my EF Yak, thats a good thing. I'm very happy to see they made the fus round and scale. I'm quite sure this is my next plane, can't wait to see how it builds and flys!

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/24/2005 5:17:48 PM)

John, Sammy has confirmed that the correct wing area is ~1740 sq in.

Volfy -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (12/25/2005 7:27:55 AM)

What is the width of the cowl? This one looks like it might be perfect size and weight for the 86cc twin I have.

What is the price going to be? I hope it is substantially less than the 100cc class aerobats. Price is the main reason I don't much care to get into the 34-35% stuff. Once you get into the 100cc twin class, everything gets much more expensive.

The contact is on their web page:

Volfy, I should have my plane by this coming weekend. When I get the plane I will send you the cowl measurement.

Greg, do you have your 33% yak yet?

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (1/1/2006 2:47:22 AM)

I just arrived in town yesterday afternoon (December 30th). My plane had arrived and is ready
for pickup. However, the company that shipped my plane closed early and won't be open again
until Tuesday due to the holiday. I will pick the plane up Tuesday and post some pictures by
wednesday. I will start assembling the plane Friday. Still waiting on my 3W80 which is on backorder
and probably wont be here until mid January at the earliest.

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (1/4/2006 9:14:32 PM)

I picked up my Yak yesterday. The plane arrived in a crate that wouldn't fit into my 4-runner,
so I had to remove the individual boxes. It costs more to ship with the crate due to the extra weight.
However, Sammy likes to use this method since it reduces the risk of damage during shipping. Within
the crate are 5 boxes containing the fuselage, the wings, the cowl, the landing gear and tubes. The 5th
box is within the fuselage box and contains the stabs, rudder and hardware.

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (1/4/2006 9:17:49 PM)

Everything comes well packaged with plenty of bubble wrap to prevent damage.

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (1/4/2006 9:24:48 PM)

The wheel pants are gelcoated and very high quality, and the fuselage felt very light. The plane
even comes with a large spinner that will have to be drilled and cut for your particular engine. The
rudder is a behemoth.

Greg

Columbo -> RE: Aviation Models 33% Yak Build Thread (1/4/2006 9:31:53 PM)

I wanted to compare the size of the fuselage on this plane with that on my 33% WH Extra 260.
As you can see the fuselage is slightly smaller than the WH due to the way it tapers off toward
the rear. Due to its smaller size, it also felt lighter. Notice however, that the rudder is larger on
the Yak. The ligher and smaller fuselage with larger rudder should give this plane some serious
rudder authority. Im looking forward to some effortless knife edge loops given the size of the
rudder and the power to weight that the 3W80 should give.
