The Walkera Dragonfly 4 seems to be a popular choice this Holiday, for people that own or have 'actually' ownded one; how'd you rank the Walkera Dragonfly 4?

oops -> RE: Walkera Dragonfly 4ch Poll! (12/17/2005 2:09:02 PM)

A slightly modified Walkera 4 (clipped blades only) needs no additional mods...

Just set it up and take it up.

And it's one of the simplest models around. Easy to fix and cheap to operation.
Challenging to fly.

I love mine :)

Clipped the blades? got any instructions for that?

Dragonfly 4 C. I just won one off e-bay for 70.00+25.00 s/h and it has the sim kit.

I need a lil simple toy before I ruin my Blade CP... LOL.
I'll have a better idea of this poll next week after X mas :D

I have one. The servo's arent very good, so as soon as they start jittering get some Hitec HS55, much better.
When the tail motor burns out, replace it with a GWS direct drive kit. Lasts heaps longer. Get some heat sinks on both motors, again makes em last longer.
When your sick of breaking the landing gear buy this http://www.helidirect.com/product_info.php?products_id=826
I did and dont regret it. Read my post about it here http://www.rcgroups.com/forums/showthread.php?t=458803#post4810376
Lastly, get yourself some 2s 1500 or 1800mah lipo batteries and a charger to suit. 20 min run times. Flight time when your learning is money well spent.
If after every 5 mins you have to stop and recharge, your goin nowhere. Who needs that?
Also, the Venom Night Ranger II is the same heli, so all parts fit, and its at your local hobby store, not China.
Thats my 2 cents

well, you can buy it from autoscafe.com for 111.99 with express shipping so it arrives in under 5 days... but really, this is probably the best FIRST heli you can buy, it teaches you mechanical skills and once you can get over it's qwirks you can fly almost any heli out there, plus it tests how far you REALLY want to go in the hobby. if you decide that the #4 is just too much and you really don't want to get too involved in the hobby then the lama 2 ia always a great SECOND choice.

Hi Twflys,

THe clipping of the blades is to increase the main motor RPM so as to improve stabiliy and forward flight capability (The DF4 will fly quite fast with improved rotor head speed)

The mod I developed over time for the Version 2 DF4 (thick blades, and has a metal disc under the main gear) is to remove material from the trailing edge of the blades.

I presently use 32mm max chord. I've flown a stock DF4 with 32mm clipped blades and flown for over 10 minutes on the standard battery !!!!. Just in hover.

Anyway, measure back 32 mm from the leading edge, and mark anything past 32mm. Then remove.

The quality of the blades is critical for this mod, so only the latest Walkera blades work well. Honeybee blades are good, but too soft. Old Walkera blades are too thin and brittle.

On the older model, you just remove the tips by 1cm, and try again. It works also, but flight time is reduced. Increasing the aspect ratio of the blades is definately the best move.

My Walkera 22 D started out good but after about 5 or 6 flights the gyro receiver started nutting up. Now im looking at putting all new electronics in it. The body and rotor's seem tough enough it's just the electroncs that seem to be cheesey. [:'(]

Hey guys, wanted to let you know that I received my shipment of the #5-4 helicopters and put them through an inspection. As the statements in the forums say, it is not quite as ready to fly out of the box as the Blade CX. However I believe it could be a better helicopter. It is definitely quicker if you want it to be. Here is what I found that needed to be done to it….

As they said, the difference between the #5 you can find on the “Bay” and the new version #5-4 is that the receiver and servos are separate components now instead of molded to the fuselage. But for some reason the sticky tape they put on it doesn’t hold the long ride from China. And since this unit has the gyro in it you can see why you would want it secure. So take the canopy off and secure it better to its platform.

Next, the blades are put on with a single like the bigger heils and unlike the CX. So tightening and proper straightening of the blades is critical for a stable flight. (be careful not to over tighten the screws as it will strip the blade mount. Just snugg). Now it may take a time or two to get the blades straight but after it flies very well!

I actually like the battery platform better than that of the CX. It is easier to get to and holds the battery better.

Here is some pics and a video for you guys. Can you think of which one I need to order and put through the ringer next? I am definitely going to stock this one and parts. (Sold 4 in one day already J) but I want to carry more. So just like I did here I’m gonna order then put to test and let you guys know the truth. By the way Walkera is the manufacturer of OEM products for the Megatech Helis if you were wondering why they looked alike. It is becasue they are like the origional #5 that the #5-4 replaced. However the Walkera one is cheaper. About $170.

Thanks!
