Hi,

I want to build a rudder servo pull pull tray & I have no idea what weight of CF I need. I will be using giant servos in a 40% Edge. Please advise.

THANKS!

If you are using CF laminated plates, 2mm thickness is fine for most applications like this. If the span of the plate is unusually long, you can use 2.5mm.

Go with 5.7 oz, it is the most common and is the cheapest.

Use 1/8" Nomex Honeycomb or some Closed Cell Foam for your core. If you use Nomex or End Grain Balsa, throw it in your oven at about 200°F for about two hours before you lay-up. This gets out any moisture which will cause voids in your laminate.

Your lay-up should be, 0°, 45°, core, 45°, 0°. Put under vaccum if possible, or use a lot of weights.

You can cut a lot of lightening holes in the piece.
It will be plenty strong for your application.

Thanks for the replies.

I had planned on laying up 1 layer of CF over a balsa core to give me my shape. After reading this I have decided to lay up 2 layers with a core of foam. I wish I had a vac. bagger. Can someome send me one for xmas?

I was wondering if the tray was made just of CF or is there balsa in the middle. Also were can you buy nomex material. Is that what they are using for pattern ship fire walls.

There is a core between the carbon skins, you adjust the strength by the thickness of the core. A solid carbon 1/8" laminate would be incredibly heavy.

If you are going to use balsa as a core, Gene of Troy Built Models told me to use the purple can of Aqua Net hair spray on the balsa before you lay it up. You spray until it puddles, then wipe smooth and wait for it to flash off. This prevents the balsa from absorbing the resin out of the skin.

Keep at it!

I was wondering if you know a good supply of the nomex core. Also what is closed cell foam.

PLASCORE and Hexcel are the big manufactures, give them a call and see what they can do for you.

This is Hexcel's part number: 1.8 1/8 HRH-10
See if they will send you their tech manuals
on the honeycomb material, there great!

Here is a place to get 2'x4' sections.

CST is a good place to find material also, they have a core material section with definitions.

Question for you guys making these plates for servo trays: What do you use to give the servo screws something to "bite" into? Maybe a thin (1/8" plywood piece below the tray?

Good question Ken. I never really thought about it until you posed the question.

I think I will make the "meat" of the sandwich out of balsa. After making holes for the servos, I shall cut out & replace with ply where the screws will go thru. Should be Strong enuf.
