How good are the plans for the F-100D? Enough detail to make a modification from the IC fan to something else?

Hi,
Unfortunately Col. Art Johnson passed away last September and I don't know if anyone has his plans.
The plans and article were in RCM many years ago. RCM is gone, not sure who has the plans now. Might try AMA, they may be able to point you in the right direction for plans/info.
As I remember, it was all wood with foam wings that had carbon fiber strips glued in between the foam and sheeting.
To answer your question, anything can be done but you'll have to decide if it's worth the time and effort, and if you have the skill/knowledge to do it correctly. Certainly it will have to be beefed up for turbine use, then's there's the problem of increased weight and hence an increase in wing loading. Other problems, such as, is there room for the fuel tanks and associated equipment needed for a turbine (valves, ecu, pump, etc), what retracts and will they fit in the wing, etc
As I remember it was pretty heavy for a D/F model and with the weight and small wheels, and he had to install small ball bearings in the wheels to get enough speed to get it off a paved runway.

Thanks..yes I read he passed away...I also didn't know RCM went under officially? The website still say's plans are available but the magazine side is up for sale again I don't know how long ago it was updated?

I was looking at these plans for possible reference use, non-turbine application.

I had the plane and the plans, though I did not build it myself. Great plan, lots of interesting detail, including slats, flaps, working canopy, gear doors, drogue chute, lots of good stuff. Not too tough to build, it's just balsa and ply. You could beef it up for turbine, just pay attention to the center section. It was not particularly heavy, 14 pounds RTF.

I have not ordered from RCM lately, but have HEARD that ordering plans is no problem, they ARE delivering.

Hi;
I am building from the Art Johnson F-100D plans now. Changes I have done include going to a BVM Viojet (KBV.82), Spring air retracts, full inlet ducting, lighter and more correct nose and tail cone blocks, corrected rudder trim tab, foremost drop mechcanism on plyons (vortax no longer available) and a removable wing. Although the plans show a 'removable wing" they cannot be as designed (flap servos).
A lot of detail is shown on the plans but there are some deficiencies: 1. The top and front view of the canopy is missing (it is not opening on plans but I have made mine do so for starting wand. NOTE Century Jet Models will not sell spare canopies that would fit this model). 2. the ridge from the nose to the canopy is not shown correctly. 3. The wing slats are fixed. 4. The dive brake is fixed for cheater hole. 5. Fuselage longerons are not on formers. 6. Wing mating to fuselage/fuselage planking in such area is not shown or discussed in article (note jagged surfaces on plans). 7. Tail skid operation, if any is not shown or discussed. 8. This model should have sequencing landing gear doors (ala P-51) and details are lacking. 9. The proper time to cut out the lower keel for nose gear et al is lacking.
The good news is that a lot of details are included: Radio installation (drawings and the critical artical photos). The model is a nice size and a joy to work with. Note that this model uses a lot of carbon fibre in laminating the fuselage formers as well as lots of 1/8" and 1/64" plywood.
This model would be next to impossible to build without the actual construction article with its photos (reprint with plans does not have photos). The are two two suppliment articles in RCM for the wings and the drop tanks. not referred to in the plans.
This is however a fun and not to common model to build and a blessing if you love to work with balsa.

I built one from those plans, but reduced them to about 50"wingspan. I finished it to the primer stage and put in 35 flights this last fall. Its powered by an MW44 and weight's close to 8 pounds. It was a hand full on landings till I added 3/8" to the fin trailing edge. Now it is one of the better flying jets that I have built.

I've always loved the F-100 and I love working with wood so I bought these plans instantly. Sorry to say it never happened though[] I'd still love to see others work on this fine design. As a tribute to Art I'd like to post his pictures as his own build thread! Thanks Art!

Hey Dionysusbacchus;
Nice tribute to the work of Art Johnson. Those are the pictures I was referring to, (mostly). Now if someone can post the Scale Views column that the Colonel wrote for RCM in 1984-85 you can read about his genius in designing and making models.

I realize this is an old thread, but I was just thinking about this old model this afternoon. I have the plans and I believe you can still buy the foam wing cores from someone, I'll have to check.

I was wondering if anyone has installed a turbine in this model and what modifications were necessary?
