You need a snazzy little gadget called a "gear puller". Your local hobby store should have one. Wedge the assembly into the gear puller, align it with the tooth, and slowly rotate the gear puller's screw shaft-- it'll pop right out.

Big problem! Does anyone know how to separate the plastic tail drive gear from its shaft? The gear threads got stripped so I bought a new tail drive gear assembly (HS 1013-1) but to install it into the aluminum retainer, the plastic gear (which is too large a diameter to pass through the hole which captures the bearing) must be removed from the shaft. How can this be done without destroying the gear in the process?
HELP!!

Greentea,

Thanks for the help. I didn't know such a tool existed... I'm on my way to get one. I guess that I shouldn't be surprised that one of the few plastic parts on an SE is what fails first. I think I had the belt too tight and when the tail rotor touched the ground it shredded both the belt and the teeth on the pulley. I think I'll leave the belt a little looser than they recommend so it doesn't happen again. That is a tough part to replace.

It's funny, but there seems to be a specialized tool for every application. Makes for an expensive hobby, but using a gear puller for instance sure beats trying with two pair of pliers.

You may also want to replace the belt, even if it looks perfectly fine. You're already going to have to disassemble the body to replace the gear, and the belt may have some hairline cracks that are not apparent. If the belt snaps, the tail stops rotating, and then your helicopter starts to resemble a flying top. And I think the belt's like $10 or so... not a bad investment.

The manual for the T-Rex shows that the belt should be tight enough that one side will almost reach the other if you compress it... I check by taking a screwdriver and using the long shaft to push one side against the other. You're good if they almost touch, or do touch with quite a bit of effort.

Good luck !

dumb question(i hate batteries.)...

My batt pack slipped out of the strap that was on it when i flew just a minute ago. It damaged the shrink wrapping, but doesnt seem to have damaged the cells. The damaged shrink wrap is up front near the circuit board connecting the cells. Is the battery alright if the cells were not damaged? i dont see any puffing or smoking going on, so i used electrical tape to re-seal it, put it in a metal pot with a lid, and set it in the center of the garage for tonight.

Hey txraggie08, first of all, I dont think there is such a thing as a dumb question when it comes to LiPo batteries and damage! Anyway, as long as there is no damage to the cells or the wiring to and from those cells, there is no reason that the battery cannot still be used. I have a battery that had the shrink wrap damaged and I just re-wrapped it with clear shrink wrap (be careful if you do this, you dont want the battery getting too hot from the heat gun!) Knock on wood, it has been great ever since.

What batteries are you guys using? I've had two of those green 2200 mah lipo batteries (mystery battery) and neither one can keep the heli in the air for more than 30 seconds without losing power and slowing the motor. I have a 2200 mah 10c silver colored lipo battery that works well and has plenty of power. I don't know what the difference is but I'll never buy any battery that is green again.

Hey smadadet, I am using a 3s Apex 2000mah and a 3s Thunder Power 2100mah (I like the TP2100 better). It is possible that the mystery green batteries are dead! Test them and see what the voltage is at. I am sure you know that LiPo batteries should not be discharged to under 3 volts per cell, so if the 11.1v pack is under 9v. it is pretty much done for unless it can be jump started with a Nimh charger (Jumpstarting this way can be DANGEROUS! ONLY DO THIS IF YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!!!)

Check the voltage... if it's under 9V, do yourself a favor and just recycle them at a place like this. It's not worth trying to do it on your own, because LiPo's can explode if mistreated.

$60 vs a burned-down garage? Easy math for me.

Is the battery looking bloated? If so, then soak it in salt water for a day or two and then you can dispose it. Have seen a video of the exploding lipo and it looks like a flame thrower when they explode. Heard a guy torched the inside of his vehicle with a lipo...

HS65's mount w/out any mods to the SE - just pop them in. I hear the gear sets are not yet available... but I did not know this when I went with 65's over the 56's... I'm sure they will have gear sets shortly.

What modifications need to be made to the HS-56 servos to fit the carbon frame? I need to pick up some cyclic servos this weekend and it going to be the HS-56's or HS-65's. Thanks.
