You need a snazzy little gadget called a "gear puller". Your local hobby store should have one. Wedge the assembly into the gear puller, align it with the tooth, and slowly rotate the gear puller's screw shaft-- it'll pop right out.

Big problem! Does anyone know how to separate the plastic tail drive gear from its shaft? The gear threads got stripped so I bought a new tail drive gear assembly (HS 1013-1) but to install it into the aluminum retainer, the plastic gear (which is too large a diameter to pass through the hole which captures the bearing) must be removed from the shaft. How can this be done without destroying the gear in the process?
HELP!!

So there is only one thing I am missing from my T-Rex, glossy WOVEN carbon fiber flybar paddles.
Anybody???

Greentea,

Thanks for the help. I didn't know such a tool existed... I'm on my way to get one. I guess that I shouldn't be surprised that one of the few plastic parts on an SE is what fails first. I think I had the belt too tight and when the tail rotor touched the ground it shredded both the belt and the teeth on the pulley. I think I'll leave the belt a little looser than they recommend so it doesn't happen again. That is a tough part to replace.

Smadadet

GreenTea -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (3/17/2006 3:46:06 PM)

It's funny, but there seems to be a specialized tool for every application. Makes for an expensive hobby, but using a gear puller for instance sure beats trying with two pair of pliers.

You may also want to replace the belt, even if it looks perfectly fine. You're already going to have to disassemble the body to replace the gear, and the belt may have some hairline cracks that are not apparent. If the belt snaps, the tail stops rotating, and then your helicopter starts to resemble a flying top. And I think the belt's like $10 or so... not a bad investment.

The manual for the T-Rex shows that the belt should be tight enough that one side will almost reach the other if you compress it... I check by taking a screwdriver and using the long shaft to push one side against the other. You're good if they almost touch, or do touch with quite a bit of effort.

Good luck !

well my trex flew for the first time(with an experienced pilot flying it). Im not even going to detail exactly what all i had done wrong, but its fixed now. The batts are charging on my truck battery now, so ill be out uder my big lights trying it soon.

txaggie08 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (3/18/2006 2:52:36 AM)

dumb question(i hate batteries.)...

My batt pack slipped out of the strap that was on it when i flew just a minute ago. It damaged the shrink wrapping, but doesnt seem to have damaged the cells. The damaged shrink wrap is up front near the circuit board connecting the cells. Is the battery alright if the cells were not damaged? i dont see any puffing or smoking going on, so i used electrical tape to re-seal it, put it in a metal pot with a lid, and set it in the center of the garage for tonight.

Hey txraggie08, first of all, I dont think there is such a thing as a dumb question when it comes to LiPo batteries and damage! Anyway, as long as there is no damage to the cells or the wiring to and from those cells, there is no reason that the battery cannot still be used. I have a battery that had the shrink wrap damaged and I just re-wrapped it with clear shrink wrap (be careful if you do this, you dont want the battery getting too hot from the heat gun!) Knock on wood, it has been great ever since.

txaggie08 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (3/18/2006 7:56:53 PM)

thanks chris. No damage to the cells so i think im good. Brought them out to the field for the club meeting and let some of our electric guys look at them and they confirmed it :)

smadadet -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (3/20/2006 11:02:09 PM)

What batteries are you guys using? I've had two of those green 2200 mah lipo batteries (mystery battery) and neither one can keep the heli in the air for more than 30 seconds without losing power and slowing the motor. I have a 2200 mah 10c silver colored lipo battery that works well and has plenty of power. I don't know what the difference is but I'll never buy any battery that is green again.

chris b -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (3/21/2006 4:03:08 AM)

Hey smadadet, I am using a 3s Apex 2000mah and a 3s Thunder Power 2100mah (I like the TP2100 better). It is possible that the mystery green batteries are dead! Test them and see what the voltage is at. I am sure you know that LiPo batteries should not be discharged to under 3 volts per cell, so if the 11.1v pack is under 9v. it is pretty much done for unless it can be jump started with a Nimh charger (Jumpstarting this way can be DANGEROUS! ONLY DO THIS IF YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT YOU ARE DOING!!!!!)

GreenTea -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (3/21/2006 4:38:29 PM)

Check the voltage... if it's under 9V, do yourself a favor and just recycle them at a place like this. It's not worth trying to do it on your own, because LiPo's can explode if mistreated.

$60 vs a burned-down garage? Easy math for me.

leejax02 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (3/30/2006 1:43:48 PM)

Is the battery looking bloated? If so, then soak it in salt water for a day or two and then you can dispose it. Have seen a video of the exploding lipo and it looks like a flame thrower when they explode. Heard a guy torched the inside of his vehicle with a lipo...

rfaster -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (3/31/2006 4:46:09 AM)

HS65's mount w/out any mods to the SE - just pop them in. I hear the gear sets are not yet available... but I did not know this when I went with 65's over the 56's... I'm sure they will have gear sets shortly.

What modifications need to be made to the HS-56 servos to fit the carbon frame? I need to pick up some cyclic servos this weekend and it going to be the HS-56's or HS-65's. Thanks.

GLITCHING!

I have flown my T-Rex 450XL CCPM for about 20 packs now, and until yesterday everything has worked out fine. Suddenly I experienced an ugly glitch, seems like engine cut for 1/2 second, accompanied with a nasty tailswing. I managed to land without hurting anyone nor the heli. Checked everything all over. New take-off, and after just a minute or two it happened again, one second cut off, big tailswing, and bearly managed to save it once more. Equipment on board is BL420LF 3200 KV Brushless, BL25T ESC, heat sinc modified. Futaba PCM 146 receiver + GY401. Engine hot, ESC hot, but not extreemely, batteries (two different) only tepid. I have flown on the same field for years, with no glitching experience. I suspect my ESC, but seems strange that it suddenly starts to glitch... Since I am a newbe to helies, I don't like this extra challenges at all! I am ready to performe the very expensive elimination method, to get rid of the problem, but any hints are welcome at this stage.
BR Petter

endeavor_635650 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (6/27/2006 11:03:24 PM)

Static build up on tailbelt. Rub the wax from one of those static sheets that you throw in the dryer onto your belt. Or if you have an anodized aluminum tailcase, you can remove the anodizing where the case comes in contact with the with the little idler that rides on the belt. The static build up all depends on the weather outside. Temperature, humidity, and elevation all play a role in whether or not static will build.

Jan_Petter -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (6/28/2006 3:02:20 PM)

OK, don't know if I can get these static sheets in Norway... I will investigate, and try tp find som anti static stuff to put on. Thanks for the info. BR Petter.

How's it going? I've been thinking about upgradeing to a trex se since i've gotten better at flying my blade cp. Now I've been checking into all the different sizes of motors and ecs and sizes of battery packs and basicly I want to have power but also would like to have a nice flight time at least 15mins or more. what would be the best setup? My other question is with radios.I need to buy one but don't want to pay for all the extra stuff I really don't need but would like a decent radio and I really dont understand all the terms with controlers so if someone can point me in a direction that would be cool thanks.

consultjdm -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (7/30/2006 8:14:29 PM)

Bigt

I like the DX6 TX for $200, It is glitch free,
I like the 430L Motor $55, and Castle 35 Amp ESC $89. Its expensive though and I have seen some good things written about the $40 (I think maybe $60) motor and esc from ehirobo.com.
I also like the TP2100 battery, but that is expensive to $75.

On the walkera 60 site, here at rc universe, Soneebee can tell you what he thinks of the less expensive stuff. He is a good guy.

Hey JD,

I agree... The DX6 is awesome for the price, it can't be beat. On the other hand I changed my 430L for a Just Go Fly 450th and it's very powerful. I have 2 TP2100's and 4 Align 2100's and I do believe they are made by Thunder Power. Grand RC offers these's for 109.00 for a two pack...... Check it out...

Good to find you JD, how have you been?

consultjdm -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (7/30/2006 9:39:37 PM)

TMfnyc,

I'm doing great, my heli is flying great, I got a harley wide glide so Ive been biking a little.

I have a Just go Fly 400DH in one of my showguns (KV4400), its a good motor but I had a couple of the top bearings pop out and destroyed the motors. So I stopped buying them. The bearings came out from hard landings (not crashes just coming down hard on the skids, not breaking the skids) but they shouldnt have come out. Just Go Fly suggest the 450Th for the TREX and Im sure it is a great performer. I have the align KX850133A 4050KV. Is that the same one you have? What is the KV on the Just Go Fly 450th? Do you like the 450 better? My 400 runs real cool and the one I have now has not broken, maybe I just got a couple bad ones but the bearing being able to come out (the one on top with the shaft through it) seems like a bad design.

I flew my rex yesterday and plan on taking her up again shortly.

happy flying.

TMFNYC -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (7/30/2006 10:56:57 PM)

JD,

I think my motor from Align is the same as yours- It's the one that came with the Trex SE. The JGF450th is rated at 3000kv but I run it with a 13t and WOW it does everything great! Had a few crashes these last few weeks, due to wind.... (That's my story and I'm sticking to it) But will be flying this week.

Congrats on the Harley.... Be safe- it's not remote control and parts are more expensive!

consultjdm -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (7/31/2006 4:46:24 PM)

TMFNYC

I'm surprised your running a 13t. and that the KV is so low. I just thought that motor would be high KV like the 430L and run on 11 tooth for the TREX. the 450Th must have a lot of torque. Do you know what head speed you are getting and are you in Governor mode?

JD,

I am in governor mode, but don't know my head speed... I doesn't bog down at all and takes off like it's insane.... I love this motor....

Going flying....
