The LHS has the same deal... $499, plus sales tax. I know I could get it a little cheaper via mail, but I don't want to walk in there buying parts for something I've looked at in his store. One of my LHS though, wouldnt even open the boxes to be able to compare the SE and XL. They're not getting the initial sales business because of it either. The bummer is that with all the extras, I'll have another 1 - 2 months in putting this thing together. Until then, I guess I'll fly my BCPP. It's probably better anyway, that'll give me 2 more months to get practice!

Can this T-Rex really be flown in small areas (IE, basement)???

Only if your good.

shag555 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/19/2006 9:27:25 PM)

I have a really big basement, and otherwise, I suck at forward flight. I've been looking at videos of this 450, and it is amazingly fast!

Shag,

I guess that depends on how good you are, I would think you could hover.

Yeah, that's what I'm looking for... Just something to tinker with while in the garage and in the basement on a cold evening.

ECP666 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/20/2006 3:05:41 AM)

Shag:

I am flying an SE. Easy build, very stable, rock solid tail. I have HS65HB's (sweet fit - no cutting) on cyclic, a GY401 with an Airtronics 94761 digital on the tail. I have an SA on order. I will use HS65's in all four positions just to see the difference. Bet it flies almost as well without the digital, but then, I am not a 3D guy - yet! The HS65HB is also half the weight of the digital, and the SE tends to be a few grams tail heavy in my experience.

And, oh yeah, I have flown it (very carefully) in the living room.

shag555 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/20/2006 11:44:19 AM)

I don't want to sound cheap... I have a TP 3S3P 6000 mAh 11.1V 12C battery that I've cut apart to make 3X, 3P 11.1 V 2000 mAH packs. I know these won't be any good for flying 3D... Was hoping to save some buckaroos early and use these "home-grown" packs early on for hovering and learning forward flight.

Anyone see any problems with using these cells / packs (IE 12C packs) for initial "beginner" flight?

consultjdm -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/20/2006 3:55:16 PM)

Shag,

I don't know how to do it but if your successful it should work fine I think. 11.1, 2000Mah, 12C, Party on.

shag555 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/20/2006 4:30:06 PM)

I did a little investigating on Espirit Model's website (that's where I got all the goodies to begin with for my 40 sized 3D conversion)... It appears that the cells are actually rated at 15C (I THINK). Either way, I'm going to use them. Looks like I'll just need to put the packs together then soldier the balancer wires in too.

That'll save me a bundle!

consultjdm -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/20/2006 6:06:32 PM)

Shag,

Lipo cells come with protection circuits for overcharge and stuff that keeps them from blowing up during charging I think.

Will you have 3 sets of those circuits to make your 3 batteries from the one battery?

And my 6000 Mah battery for my Logo 10 was about $330. Seems more expensive to make it into 3 2000Mah batteries than buying new ones. Well, I guess if you have no use for the 6000 mah battery and can't get a good price on ebay it makes sense.

shag555 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/20/2006 6:37:57 PM)

I don't believe in Re-sale... I buy, I keep. I swore this battery was big bucks Feb 2005, but maybe I'm wrong... Espirit lists it as $205.00 right now, so who knows. I agree with you, it seems like a waste, but it's a waste just sitting there too. I thought about using it to run an electric starter for my planes, but that's an application where it's being picked up and dropped all the time, so I don't think the battery would be very durable there. Thought about a 600 sized T-Rex, but that thing takes 22V???

Believe it or not, there were no over-charge boards in this battery... I'm planning on using the Triton on these batts that I make, and plan on wiring the TP conversion for cell balancing. I'm not sure weather I want a TP or Triton Balancer, and weather the balancer will keep the batteries from over-charging??? Somewhere in the back of Fly-RC Mag, is a company that sells all this stuff. I'll be darned If I can find it though - they sell cells as well.

Again, looking on Thunder Power's website, they show a battery conversion for older batteries to convert them to charging with cell balancing. Their illustration shows the wiring directly to the cells, not to the circuit board, so maybe the cell balancer keeps over charge / spiking to a minimum???

Hope I don't burn my house down... Guess I'd better empty out that 5 gal clay pot quick for charging / storing these things!!!

shag555 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/20/2006 7:12:00 PM)

I did a search on that little circuit board... Turns out it's called a PCB Regulator, which does nothing more than limit the amount of juice flowing to each cell, to keep them from blowing during the charge cycle (provided the user tries to jam in too much Amps with fast charging). They do not have a voltage cut-off circuit. I'm planning on using my Triton Charger to charge my "new" packs I'm making. I'll need to get the balancer as I indicated in my last post, as well as the balance jack.

Should be OK...

This entire LiPoly Cell build deal reminds me of reloading ammo vs buying ONLY factory ammunition. I'm still breaking out the 5 gallon clay pot though.

shag555 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/22/2006 1:47:34 AM)

Well I went to the LHS today for a new set of servo gears for the BCPP, and the T-Rex SE was gone! There was an XL CDE and HDE yet... He also had a MX400 and 450... Pretty nice, but I'd prefer the T-Rex.

He told me that he'd order another SE in... I don't need the ESC and I'm a little short on cash too, so I'm going to part on the motor and ESC (he's going to take it and deduct $100 from the cost)... So I'm at $400 for a bare bones SE.

Guess I'll order through him monday!

Street Flyer -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/24/2006 11:04:45 PM)

Hey guys!

I am about to build a T-rex 450 Xl eCCPM with a GY401 and a 9650 on the tail. I am wondering what to set the transmitter gyro gain to.

consultjdm -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (9/25/2006 4:00:59 PM)

Shag,

I find them online for $389 delivered ($369 before delivery cost) to the States with motor and Esc.

Street flyer,
It depends on your setup but I think if you start at 70% that should be safe. Keep going up till the wag is too much then back it off 5%.

Ok i purchased the Trex 450 XL SE from Ebay have a trex 450 XL CCPM already but just figured i would go with this deal. but now i'm wondering what servos to get. i use HS55s with my Trex i have now but thought since i'am getting an upgraded version i should get the best for it. Any suggestions would be nice, i want it to be fully 3D no messing around. Have a Hitec Optic 6 TX i'm going to use and plan to get an Electron 6 RX. But just not sure about servos, going to use a Futaba GY401 Gyro. So any suggestion would be great.

don_87 -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (10/2/2006 1:14:14 PM)

For cyclic use Hitec HS 56hb.
The 65mg's are the servo of choice nowadays, but they don't work well with the electron 6 because of the 3.3 volts.
For the tail, most use the 9650 digital.

consultjdm -> RE: Official T-rex 450 XL SE Thread (10/2/2006 6:13:38 PM)

I use the HS 56HB's on Cyclic and the Big Digital servo that you get with the Gy401. I use a CC (castle creations) Phoenix 35AMP ESC. The ESC has good power for the servos and a great Governor mode, (very stable head speed).
