Leejax, I hit 103rd today so you don't have to bother. I'm going to fiddle tonight with the components and try to get it to balance.

No problem, I was on the way up there tomorrow to get some Blade parts for my son. Fubar03, I checked out trextuning and it is informative, but no where as much traffic as on RCUniverse. I saw alot on the 450x and really haven't been back in a little bit.

Well if flies!

I moved the speed control to the side, the reciever to the front, all the way forward under the battery. I had some left over 3M velcro that could suspend my jeep from the garage ceiling and put that on the batteries and battery platform and moved the battery as far forward as it would go. Then I put the 401 about 3/4" behind the motor under the main gear and everything balanced.

Now I need to tach it and see what my head speed is. Any suggestions for throttle curve in Idle 1? I've heard 100, 90, 100 but that seems excessive.

A quick question:

I have a xl with a futaba 240 gyro. I have been flying it for about three weeks and recently switched the gyro to the AVS mode. It is the first helicopter that I have flown with a heading hold gyro. I have the gain at about 50% but the tail seems to be a little bit twitchy. It does however hold the correct heading. I tried turning the gain down but it did not help. I am not sure if this is normal or not. I would hate to fly for weeks and weeks not having it set up correctly. Secondly do most people use the avs 100% of the time? Is their any situations where normal mode is preferable?

The gyros with a switch like yours most set up in HH mode and leave them there. On the nitros we fly mostly in HH with the exception of the 401 that needs to be trimmed in normal mode.

The notable exception is some of the scale guys like to fly in rate mode and feels that it looks more natural when the tail follows the nose by weathervaneing, whereas in HH you have to do coordinated turns using the rudder in order for it to look right and appear smooth which is what the scale guys are after.

Other than that there's really no good reason to buy a 401 to run in rate mode and have to setup revo mixing et all, its like buying a vette and putting a chevette engine in it.

The problem your having is likely too much gain, both gyro and mechanical. How far from the center of the servo spline is your pushrod hooked up on the output wheel/arm?

What servo do you have on the tail? Is your linkage nice and smooth with no binding?

I have a hitec 56 on the tail. I think it is pretty smooth. On normal mode it does not twitch. It does have a z bend to the servo arm which probably has a little slop. I read somewhere that the atv works different on the avs mode, but I did not get a good explanation of how it is different. It flies good but it just has a little wag. I have started loops and rolls and the avs does seem to keep the tail in line.

I am assembling my first trex and ready to install elctronics - while placing components temporarily to check balance I notice that everyone here is talking about tail-heavy and yet mine seems to be nose heavy- even without canopy. Heli is XL with 420 and Align 25 ESC, Axis 2200 mah battery, DX6 rx and JR G500t gyro and using S75 servos (until later). I want to locate ESC on left side next to motor, rx right behind motor and gyro right behind rx. Any suggestions for balance? Any problems foreseen for this arrangement?

Thanks

barracudahockey,

It is 3/8 of an inch from center of the servo. It is the last hole in the two hole arms that come with the hitec 56. The atv on my radio is at 115 for the rudder.

I am giving up my dragonfly 35 for a t-rex SE. With it being all metal, I'm wondering where the weak link in in most crashes. I'm especially concerned about using metal blade grips on both the main rotor and the tail. In nearly all on my dragonfly crashes, the blade grips broke and saved the rest of the mechanical parts from breaking. Would I be better off to buy plastic blade grips for the SE?

I am trying to finish up my TREX 450 SE but have some remaining questions:

1 - Where is the best place to mount the ESC (Phoenix 35) and what do I use to mount it (velcro, double sided tape, tie wraps???)? Will operating temps be so high that velcro or tape are out of the question?

2 - Do I need to insulate (shrink tubing, etc) the connectors from the motor (AON 2815-3500) to the ESC? When I soldered the connectors to each wire I put shrink tubing over those joints.......I just don't know if I have to insulate the connectors from each other to prevent contact and frying my electronics???

3 - I am using HS-56 servos and a Futaba 9650 on the tail.......I hooked everything up electrically to check out my radio but noticed on the HS-56s there is not a lot of throw in either direction off center??? This is my first electric micro-heli..........is that normal for these micro servos?

4 - Any suggestions on how best to hide, stash, or tie up the maze of wires so this bad boy doesn't look like a airborne bundle of wires? Currently have the receiver aft of the motor as far back as possible........maybe move it to the front above the battery? I searched the gallery but didn't find any pics that were helpful. If you have some photos you can post that would help!

Thanks for helping a newb and safe flying!

Ed
