My F3B winches are done for now and all you "retro" guys out there with Hawks that need stabs, or the larger "Superhawk rudder" please let me know as I'm thinking of a limited run of these for those who are interested. I will also produce some Butyrate (yes, Rit dyeable and rare) canopies. Dennis Ross is not messin' with the tooling anymore but has provided me with some of the essential parts, so if you are in need of these parts let me know and I'll put you on the list. Cost will be about $40 for each piece except canopies which will be $20. I also have the molds ready for some Kevlar/carbon fuselages with the longer boom in the works as well. These will have the Polycarbonate dorsal and tubes installed. Cost will run about $170 a copy for these. I need to gage the need before investing the time or materials in the parts. Otherwise they will all go to E-Bay and we all know how nuts the bidding can get there! More Superhawks are in the works for Spring 2006. They sell out faster than I can make them so let me know if you are interested in a copy ASAP as my capacity is limited.

Hello,

The Superhawks to be built currently are having all the materials gathered. The materials are VERY hard to locate and are VERY expensive. I will pick up the last of the expanded high-density polystyrene and Finland plywood today and plan to start on a batch of 20 planes as soon as next week. The planes will be completed as my time allows. I will not take deposits as this puts too much pressure on me to rush the job. Dennis Ross has kindly and generously supplied me with the dorsals to complete the planes and Hobie is/has been very supportive of the new version of his creation. The planes will be available for purchase only when they are ready from final assembly. This could be May or as late as August. All planes will be spoiler versions with the SD7037 airfoil. Price will be $695 plus shipping. Few people are on the list as of yet but all planes have sold out before production is scheduled to to be complete in the past. If you REALLY want one of these I suggest you put your name on the list NOW. NO DEPOSIT REQUIRED. They sell out faster than I can make them. Orders come from worldwide locations. They WILL NOT BE PRODUCED IN MASS QUANTITIES! EVER!!

You can PM me if you want to be on the list in the order received.

Thanks,

TONY JOHNSON

Hello,

I have all the materials together now EXCEPT the plywood. I managed to get most of the plywood but they were short on this one size The importer is out of the 1/64 in the large sheets so until this shows up there will be a delay getting the wings made. They are expecting a shipment from Finland to arrive sometime this month, so keep your fingers and antennas crossed. Lots of other things to do anyway.

Just went out and flew last week and was able to slope soar with a group of 4 Bald eagles. They showed a little interest in the Superhawk turning their heads to look at it and then were able to easily accelerate past it on their way down the beach. I wish I had the ability to penetrate into the wind like they do! The advantages of having evolution and an on-board computer...PRICELESS!!

Thermals,

Tony

Everyone who has sent me a PM has been added to the list. I am STILL waiting for the importer to notify me of the shipment of the .4mm plywood for the wing skins from Finland. This is such a pain in the you-know-what. As soon as I know something on this I will post it here.

I just looked at E-bay and someone has listed one of my RES Superhawks there and he did a super job on it. It is DEFINITELY worth the asking price as he put a lot of work in finishing it. If you don't want to wait for the next batch to get done, I would seriously consider this one. It is item number 6059841972.

And no, I don't know him personally. He just cut and pasted his verbage off of Brian Joders Hobiehawk.com website.

Thermals,
Tony

Glad to see continued interest in Hobie's designs. I'm a long time fan of the original Hobie Hawk and currently own 2 of them, one of which has only been used for display. I'm just starting to get back into the RC sport after a 25 years hiatus.

I'm converting everything I own to electric and was wondering if you have considered an electric powered version. I have considered doing this with one of my original Hawks. Those of us that live in flatlands (mid-Michigan) get tired of having to set up winches and hi-starts.

Either way I'm interested in your new variation. I will keep an eye on your progress, unfortunatlely, I'm not in position to acquire one of your new birds at the moment, but hopefully you will keep them in production for awhile and they will still be available when I am ready.

The Hawk still has a good following and the folks that have them had connected with the unusual design when it first came out.

Anyway, I looked closer at the Superhawk RES on e-bay and noticed it has some covering variation on the wings. Looks like it has had some sort of recovering done on the wings so I would ask about this before buying. One spoiler bay is white, the other black. The spoiler panel may be missing on the right wing?

Thermals,
Tony

Hi Tony,

Im the guy who listed the Superhawk for my friend Richard who bought it from you awhile ago. Richard asked me to sell it for him on ebay. It kills him to sell it but he needs the money. The plane is almost finished just alittle work on the spoliers and incident pins. Otherwise the plane is in perfect condition and never been flown. I cut and past a description from hobie hawk.com on the ebay listed hope thats ok, just trying to help out my friend. If my wife wouldn't kill me I'd buy it...but.
I used to live on Orcas Island, my folks still do. My father gives biplane rides on Orcas in his 1929 Travel AIr 4000...the Red and Yellow one, maybe you've seen him in anacortes...he's been sharing the magic up there for 15 years or so. I fly my hobie hawk here in Dana Point at the strands where Hobie started. Just thought I'd drop you a line and tell you nice job on the hawk...it is awesome.
Sincerely,
Scott Magner

Thanks Scott,

The Superhawk sold after the auction closed on e-bay from what I understand. The new owner is not going to be disappointed!!

Anyway, I now have the .4mm Finland birch plywood on it's way to me and the construction on the wings and fuselages has begun again. I hope to have the planes available by late August or early September. Please understand I am a one person construction team on this plane and the delivery dates are at best "approximate" as I am not a mass producer of planes. I can only go as fast as my spare time allows and explained earlier this is a mass undertaking as far as labor "intensive-ness" is concerned. Please be patient and I will have the planes finished as soon as humanly possible. I take no deposits from anyone as I cannot gaurantee delivery times because of my busy work schedule at my "regular job". If you pass it is easy to sell the plane to someone else. I have vacation in July and will not be sniffin' epoxy fumes then but will be on a beach in Maui with a mai tai in my hand for a couple of weeks instead... ALL will sell out no matter what. The list is over 75% full now if you want a copy e-mail me a PM now...

Another Hawk project is in the works. Stay tuned for more info later this Summer!

Thermals,

Tony Johnson
