I am putting together a planes plus Dream 110. ~8.5lbs, 68" span pattern. I was planning on going with the saito 125, but now have my eye on the 120ax. Anyone think the 120 ax would be too much? I don't want to rip the wings off

Hi!
I do not think U could have any "too much power" problems!
The instruction manual writes:
" The Dream 110 is designed to permit the modeler to choose any of a wide variety of motors. Depending on performance desired, practically anything from a .90 two-stroke to a 1.40 four-stroke may be used. Keep in mind that larger motors will require careful balancing, and it may be necessary to add weight to the tail, or devise a way to locate the main battery pack far enough aft to offset the heavy engine. This example mounts a single rudder servo on a pushrod at the fuselage rear, and balances exactly on CG. Photos and an explanation of BOTH rudder servo options are included.

The ideal motor for this airframe is the YS 1.10 four-cycle, as it will provide the best power for weight and overall performance. We will use a Magnum XL 1.20FS four-stroke with standard muffler, because of it's relatively low-cost, ease of operation, availability, and use of low-nitro fuel.

If you choose a two-stroke motor, it should be a .91 size minimum. For best aerobatic performance, you should use a tuned pipe arrangement to provide power suitable for F3A-style aerobatics."

So i just say buy the 120 AX with stock muffler, take an APC 15x10 and do not be afraid of ripping the wings off just have fun!

G'day
What I have learnt is that you can never over power a plane!!!! If you take n otice of the flight characteristics and you think that there maybe a little too much then change the prop.

So is there any consensus about using a slimline or bisson muffler on the AX? I am running into the problem of not being able to arrange the muffler such that I won't have to hack my cowl up. I don't want that big ugly muffler sticking out the side of my pattern plane. So do the bissons have enough back pressure?

If you have a pattern bird, then do like me, and install a tuned pipe instead. It looks good, get better performance and you do not need to cut your cowl that much, if at all...

You can see some pictues here...from 4/18/2006

I have not had it in the ait yet, but there is lots of power for that plane...

A Prop Question:

I'm planning on mounting my new 120AX on a World Models Groovy 90 3D, for 3D flying.

What is the best prop combo for that setup? I was planing on using APC17x4, but will be more than happy to get an educated advice.

Thanks

Yaron

I have 2 of the OS 160 FX's running on home brew fuel with no nitro and they are very reliable and plenty of power in a Funtana 100 X, I bought a 120 AX to lower the weight and I'm wondering if anyone is running the 120 ddddwith no nitro and how is the reliability. The 160 is also very easy on fuel.

Hi
You are about to be dissapointed by the fuel consumption - as it is a bit higher than that of the 160.
Engine works very nice on 5% nitro so I assume no nitro won't be bad though you might expect power reduction

The 120 runs great on 15% heli fuel which is the one I'm currently using
