I have no idea how you do that, a gust that would barely lift a flag gives me trouble

I am back in the air!!! Found two good spots to fly at nite near the house. 4am I went out to give it a go. Got a good 3/4 pack out in 3 hovers ... (light) gust of wind +unplanned hard set down and I broke my tail boom in half LOL. It already had a blade strike on it and the second took it out. I really do not like how close the blades can get with a lot of rear cyclic.....makes me want to build a tail boom with a u shape or something. Course if I was better at flying/landing I would not notice this design flaw eh? Felt really good to have in semi good control for a bit of time tho.

JD I "think" my setup is pretty good at this point....I don't move my trims a whole lot except for the tail...it seems to hold pretty good. Most of my problems are over correcting and then over correcting for my over correcting. I've not had a chance at an absolutely calm day yet. The bird is good its all pilot I think. BTW I still got my links in the middle position so I am sure that does not help...but I am getting much more comfortable with it. I probably have too much pitch travel for my skill but I can hold my altitude pretty well. Its a twitchy thing ain't it? I am still flying with training gear, and thats a good thing for me, cause I still set down in motion sometimes....got to force myself to break that habit. Its all good. My goal at this point is to hold hover in a 3 foot box, wind or not, at will. I feel like if I cannot do that comfortably I got no business trying to do pattern flying or anything else.

Tommy.. tough luck on the tail boom, but their easy to replace... I would agree with you about getting the hover down first.. If you can't do that, you will only have problems everywhere else... I'm sure JD will agree.. overcorrecting is the biggest problem when learning to fly.. I did that in the beginning and I'm sure everyone else did as well.. I find myself not even thinking about hover control anymore(unless windy).. my fingers just do their thing.. I try to sneak a peak every once in a while, and I can tell my right fingers are barely moving.. this heli is so sensetive anything more just gets you in trouble.. Even forward and backward flight are only slight movements... I guess the larger throws are for 3D... and thats Waaaaaaaay down the road... I am going flying right now and will be back later.. the wind finally stopped.. just a hint of a breeze.. thats good enough for me...

Cenracer those batteries sound good.
Let us know how long they fly.

the wind can be fun - riding the gusts. You just have to be ready and apply the throttle correctly, LOL

power low on the gusts and pretty hard (well not so hard if your early to start reapplying power which is the best way) and early to regain altitude when you start to come down. Also the danger down low if you get a down draft, best to stay up at least 6 to 8 feet.

Yeah, you have to be able to hover without crashing. I bit of drift around or out of the box is okay as long as when your flying you feel in control. These helis are so light and quick they move around a bit. You do notice that in the beginning your making big corrections and finger movements and later on your barley moving the sticks. I think it has to do with forsight. You start to correct sooner so it takes less to get back under control. And I don't mean quicker finger reaction. I mean as soon as you see it start to move you start to correct or you know your changing your direction from into the wind to with the wind so you start to apply more throttle before it starts to drop.

I think you should move your links in if you can. it will make it much nicer to learn to fly on. You will probably never move them back out either. Even in all the way it still is plenty responsive.

Bro Cen.
When ready to take off you just gotta take her up. If you start slow a wind gust will tip you over. You also gotta come in with good revs on landing to prevent getting blown over again. in 5 mph wind the heavy bird lifts steady. And about the side to side (sensitivity), move the swash arms to the inner holes on servo arm as stated earlier by JD and the others. I left my elevator in the middle hole. I'm flying it like I stole it . Somebody in this forum says that

Usually tail boom strikes with the blades on landing is because you have your head speed/pitch set to low. Get it to lift just a little later. So instead of at half throttle maybe 60% throttle. Also try adjusting the travel with the other know so you don't have so much. You won't end up with as much negative pitch when your coming down. And it will take more throttle and be a little more stable when going up.

You should move all three links in so you don't get excess wear on the servo's. you dont' want them fighting each other.

if the front one pulls down 1 inch and back ones only go up 3/4 inch they are pulling on each other. Its called something, can't think of it. like interaction or cross something. But I know what it means. Burning out those servo's or locking them up when you need them would be bad, LOL. You have to put all three in the same hole on each servo horn or you will probably fry the servos early and not get as good of handling characteristics.

good luck.

Ok right now I am set for zero pitch right at 50% ...its easy enough to change. I got xtra links and servo arms so I guess I have little excuse not to set up on the inside. THX for the advice I will give it a go. Tailboom is no biggie it was already damaged. I guess the biggest thing is I have convinced myself I can fly it now....I don't worry about breaking anything or get nervous anymore...I just start it up and work on flying better. Its like a completely different machine if its setup good.
