maybe it won't glitch as much that way... I still wish walkera had released the 22E in 2.4ghz sooner.. I would still have the heli... I miss flying that one.. still alot of fun.. especially waiting for the radio to freak out and wondering "who will get hit, what will happen and where it will end up"...brings flying to a whole new level...

JD.. Philly cheese steak in NJ is better than in Philly.. we don't use as many onions or peppers... at least I don't....

Cen, I hear you on the 2.4ghz, it is so much more reliable and distance is great too.  But, it teaches you to really be on your toes with the ole lower band.  LOL!

Fixed the 22E and took it out back.  Bad idea, because I had the 3800kv brushless motor still in it.  Also the parts were just not up to the task.  I "Mangled" it again.  hit the fence doing about 25 mph sideways.  Ended up in the neighbors yard in several pieces.

I am going to fix it again, only I think I will go ahead and put a whole new head assembly in it.  CNC maybe, not sure yet.  OR, I could buy a transmitter-less 2.4ghz version and go from there.  I use my 4#3B transmitter on a blazing star I installed the 2406 receiver into.  One switch on the back of the transmitter HAS to be thrown or it will go backwards instead of forward and vice-versa.  I forgot that a couple times now and it was not pretty.  LOL!!  I was running for my life one time.  HA!!!  Flying too close.

A point of safety for anyone reading my post.  DO NOT try to modify a wooden blade on large helis.  If it doesn't fit, find the right blade that will.  PERIOD.   I almost killed myself when one flew apart on me on a test spin up to adjust tracking.  WHEW!!  luckily it ricocheted before hitting me in the arm.  It just blew up and came apart.  Not even close to half throttle.  I have a scar to remind me how dangerous these things can be.  What was I thinking???

Helimangler.. Hence your name... You are lucky you didn't get seriously hurt doing that.. I just stick to the stock blades and don't mess with those.. I'm still looking for a new heli, but I just can't find the time or energy to do it right now.. I've been flying my 4#3B alot lately and having alot of fun with that one.. really takes a beating thats for sure....

Helimangle,

Sorry to hear about the crash but thank god the 22e is so cheap and easy to fix.

Thanks for the input cen and jd.  It's appreciated.

Cen, yes the 4#3B is a fun little bird.  It also helped me learn how to handle helis.  I'm far from getting much out of them yet.  Figure 8s and a couple nose in flyings, but I almost crashed it.  I just can't help but ZIG when I should ZAG.  LOL!

I really like flying the 450 size helis too.  They are my latest obsession.  Spendy to fix when you smash  them though.  Unlike the 22E JD.

The 22E is not that bad when you figure out what to do with it as far as set-up and such.  Half the battle is getting it set up correctly.   Once again, you guys here have been helpful either directly or indirectly in this forum.  I still wish I could find  way to solve the easily messed up fixing plate for attaching the main gear to the shaft.  I tried to drill a small hole so if it does twist, it will shear the little bolt, but it is like drilling on a diamond surface with a small bit!  LOL!

Crashed my HK450 in the wind today.  Let it get blown behind me over my fence, lost site and orientation and smacked a branch on a tree, then the ground came up suddenly upon my home built bird.  *sniff*  hehehe!!   Still learing lots and lots to learn yet.

22E?  I still got it in a box (dirt, grass, rocks and all)  I also have a lot of parts.  Just not the right ones.  Oh, I could get it up an going again, but I need a new rotor head assembly (complete).  It's been pieced together so many times it is hard to get set up.  Too much slop.  I will fix it eventually though.  GOT TO!!

Take care gang.  TIME TO FLY!!

helimangler, tapping that hub with extra holes should not  be that hard if you get a little tap set.  its a pretty soft aluminum.  I got mine at the Do it Center.

Thats one of the only issues I haven't had with the 22E... I just used blue loctite and cranked it down tight.. Only let go once and that was after a tip over blade strike... Like I said, I miss the Heli.. Its was alot of fun and I had two of them so no downtime.. I sold them to a guy in california.. he sent me an email a couple of weeks ago thanking me for sending him two perfect heli's... they flew right out of the box... I guess the radio likes the weather in california better than in NJ....

helimangler.. I am probably at the same point with the 4#3B as you are.. I'm not pushing this thing because its not that stable to begin with and even though its setup right, its still all over the place.. alot of fun though... good luck fixing all the wrecks.... Cen

I just modified my Walkera #22E heli for a brushless main motor, Blue CNC Metal rotor head assembly, carbon fiber composite blades, the Super Skids 300 Landing gear system with the Adapter 22, the Super Skids Titanium Tail boom 305, 11.1 volt 1,300mah LIPO, and an ON/OFF Switch.  It's awesome flying  for a low priced 6-channel CP heli.

DChin,

Thanks for the video.  Nice setup.  Don't forget it's also the Venom NR3D.

Thanks.  I don't usually have access to the venom version, but I see that it is completely compatible with the Walkera #22E - It's just Green.  I also see that there are also Green CNC Metal rotor assemblys available.  Anyway, a nice starter 6-channel heli especially for those who don't want to repair belts.  It's unfortunate the electronics on the Rx aren't good enough to support a brushless tail motor.  I already tried.  I'm thinking that the E-SKY CP2 will be able to handle a brushless tail.  I might try that next.

Hey guys, I just finished installing the new tail motor yesterday after not flying for a week and half.

It was very hard to put the little gear on the tail motor without popping the back, I thought I broke it many times but in the end it would work.

So I start hovering it and it goes a little sideways, but I'm too scared so I throttle down. Then I go outside on a patch of grass and the helicopter lifts very fast, hovers for 4 to 5 seconds, I lost control and it crashes.

Tail boom bent, was able to fix it.  One of the blades was chewed, fixed it with tape.
The battery pack flew away, found it!
One of the small ball bearings on the rotor broke off, cheap plastic.

I'm very happy that the helo flew but I lost control too early, I'm thinking of getting that famous blue cnc head  everyone here has.
Where is the cheapest US place to buy it from?

Simio, welcome to the world of mangling helicopters.  LOL!

I went CNC early in my bird and bent it up pretty fast.  I'm not sure what to say about it.  I could probably do better now, and get more out of the parts.  But I smacked it around a lot and it got pretty sloppy.  I went half-metal and half plastic for a while and it wasn't bad for a bit.  This forum has grown into a montster size posting, but you can find a wealth of info and tips here by scouring through it.

JD, I can tap the fixing plate ok, I just cant put a small hole through the shaft with my tools here.  Maybe I can use a drill press and vice at out shop one day.  I used Blue loctite and Red loctite on the set screws but somehow I have managed to cause the shaft to spin inside anyway.  Then I end up stripping out the aluminum when I try to over-tighten the set screw.

It is all a matter of my flying skills and such.  LOL!   I always get ahead of myself and try something bold or tricky beyond my skill level.  One mistake at some of the speeds the thing can get up to it's into the tree or the fence.  LOL!   I really need to get out in the field behind the house more.  Less to hit except the ground.

Later gang!

Heli"MANGLER"    hehehehe

Helimangler,

Did you tap a couple holes and put set screws into like two of them?  That should hold it real good.  I have never had a problem with it holding with one screw.  I wouldn't think you would need to drill through the main shaft.  But if your really having a problem you could maybe grind one side of it flat easier than drilling through it.

I received your PM but I have a bug that doesn't allow me to send, the "ok" button is missing.

I just ordered a CNC metal head upgrade from your site. Thankfully you're in New York, not LA. Since I live in South Carolina its way better.
The tracking status says you shipped it the day I ordered it which im excited about, did you box it your self?

Yes I tapped two holes JD.   Two set screws.  Hitting something at full throttle usually spins it though.  Anyway, that was the best solustion so far.  I guess something HAS to give somewhere.  LOL!

Windy around here for days.  22E doesn't like much wind.  Hell, I have a hard time with the 450!  There of course are limits to how much wind to fly in.  I think.  hehehe!

Flew out near a thunderstorm and got to thinking, what if my copter gets hit by lightening?  Or worse.... ME!   Then a flash and a rumble and I went in before it got any closer.  Which was good, cause just after I landed my bird, the wind started gusting and blowing.  I would have lost it for sure.  I should know better than to temp fate like that.

Well, off to fly while I got the time and weather on my side.  Later guys!!!

Helimangler

Helimangler,

I flew my honeybee king II in pretty gusty winds on Sunday.  It is about the same size as the 22E and handles about the same amount of wind.  Always on the edge and tempting fate when flying in windy conditions.  I suppose it was about 10MPH with gusts to 15MPH Sunday.

Hey everyone!!!

I have a little problem but a easy fix but i cant figure it out and i know that anyone with a 22e will be able to tell me this..... heres my problem. I took  apart my whole heli to clean it all up and when i put it back togeather i came to one problem. My servos are pluged into the wrong places in my receaver and i cant figure out what one goes in what hole.  i only have 3 servos of course and all 3 plug into either 1, 2 or 3 or at least i though they did. So what i need is a pic that clearly shows me what servo goes in what slot on the receaver so i can get this baby flying again!

thanks alot everyone!

dchin, I just installed your metal cnc head upgrade. It took a full morning to do it and even more patience. Removing and installing the flybar on the blue metal head was trickiest part, and removing the 2 brass nails without breaking the plastic was a fun challenge.

All in all the helicopter is assembled and just needs to be recharged and balanced, that is if I didn't bend the shaft slightly.

The only big problem which I don't know how to fix is the tail motor oscilates, its rpm changes high/low/high/low like a bipolar girlfriend. Any tips on how to fix her?

Looking at the heli from the rear, the servo up front by itself plugs into #1. The left side rear plugs into #2. The right side rear plugs into #3. Hope this helps. I don't have my 22E any more (I had 3 at one time) but I made these notes when I took the stock radio out and put in a Spektrum and seperate gyro (that didn't work out). Where in SC are you? I'm in Barnwell.

The tail motor is always a problem.  The oscillation can be the result of the gears on the heli being loose or the tail motor not meshing properly with the tail gear.  You can adjust via the two tail motor screws.  Spin the tail rotor and make sure it meshes well.  Not too tight and not too loose.  Additionally, the typical tail motor lasts about 30 full flights.  I am currently working on making the whole heli brushless.  The tail motor costs about $7.99(USD).  That gets expensive after awhile and I hate the tail glitches that appear every so often.  I solved that problem by using a line noise filter.  The brushless main motor emits very low RF noise so no need for a filter on the main motor.  Hope to report back regarding this.

I was just flying today with my training gear on, and after 5 minutes of flying the helicopter, 2 ft above the ground, breaks appart midair in the most horror crash accident I've ever seen.

After all the evidence is gathered up the training gear took almost all the heat and pieces were picked up 50ft away from crash site. Some how the helicopter has minor damage.

The block cnc head broke off a screw in half and one of the blades flew off with the metal holder. One of the small two plastic ball bearings dissapeared, I have to order one now, one of the vertical plastic oval pieces broke off too.

Soo... sad

There was slight wind, not too bad. One of the helicopter's blades flew off while it was flying midair. I'll illustrate to the best of my abilities below.
