Greetings,
I have been reading these forums for the past week and have read most every post in the walkera section.

While I am not new to helicopters I have yet to be able to achieve hover, originally I bought a kyosho ep concept which I crashed while trying the first flight and parts were broken that were never available to be bought so it was scrapped. A few years later I bought a Ikarus fun pic V1 and had no fun with it as it never had the power to get out of ground effect at all. Aparently on reading the forums alot of people also had that issue.

So here I am for attempt #3 at trying to learn to hover and fly a RC copter. I would like to eventially move to a Walkera #36 once I learn the basics of flying to have a good outdoor flying machine.

Not wanting to do the large splurges I have in the past of the kyosho ($600) and the ikarus ($250) I am exploring the Walkera line of chopers.

I al currently debating on getting either a 22e or a 4 and am not sure which I should purchase. I am asking the community to please help with my ordeal. I would definatly like something with more than enough power to hover easily either stock or fairly stock.

I have a 22e and it hovers very well and has enough power to shoot up very quickly if you have the desire. It seems to be a great machine! I dont know about the #4 though.

Is this your first helicopter model that you have flown or did you fly others previous? Also which battery packs are you using as I see some come with nimh 650mah packs and some come with the lipo packs.

22E and #4 are totally different helicopters. The 22E is a collective pitch machine, which will be alot more stable than the #4 is. It will crash harder and break more parts, and is more complex to setup, but flies better. The #4 is more unstable, but it's very resiliant to crashes, it's easy to configure and it's cheaper. If you've had experience with collective pitch machines, the 22E (or 22A if you don't want a motorized tail) would be a good choice. If you want to start off cheap and simple (aslong as you don't mind a steeper flight learning curve) the #4 is a great choice. I personally learned on a FP micro. While not for everyone, I think they make the best trainer for the reflexes if you've got the patience to stick with it :).

In the end, it comes down to what you personally want from your heli.

Thanks for your input credence, the Kyosho was a CP chopper however I have yet to get a heli with enough power to hover. The setup was more difficult however things like pitching the blades were easier because of the design.

I am leaning more on the direction of CP I think though, Like I said I had the v1 fun pic and it's design was so far off from flying out of the box it wasn't even funny. Replacing the servos to me is no big deal as for added cost either. I do read mixed reviews on the electronics including the burning transistor however I am handy with a soldering iron so thats not a issue either. I read of one person suggesting even stacking the components to double the draw they could handle and if worse came to worse I wouldn't have any problems doing that either.

On the walkera forums it appears the 22e is shown as being more stable in hovering though which is a big part of my decesion. The parts replacement isn't even that much of an issue if you figure it out. A snapped tail book on the #4 requires a tail housing, boom, and frame which costs you about $15 or so plus shipping which I am sure I could get a metal boom for. As far as the tail motors the one in the pic seemed to wear well with a heat sink installed. I live in AZ so I was trying to fly at temps of about 90f with low humidity as well.

If anyone else would care to chime in I would love to hear any other opinions as well.

This is my 2nd 22E, I bought the second cause it seemed like every crash it would break off a ball off the blade nip, or the control arm. I am running the 11.1 1900ma lipo it runs a little over twice as long as the 650ma its awesome.

If the 22E is anything like the VNR3D (and it appears to be very similar, if not identical), it is an extremely quick helicopter. It is very stable, but it is neutrally stable (it goes where you point it and stays where you point it) Probably pretty severe to use as a trainer.

The Walkera #4 is similar, if not identical, to the EF Sabre, which I also own. The Sabre flies quite well and is pretty easy to fly, although it does not like wind.

The VNR3d is actually from what I have read a licensed copy of the walkera choppers however the 3D comes with a brushless motor from what I have seen for sale so it is a bit upgraded in comparison. Still a difficult decesion as both birds seem to be decent quality in the long run and parts are cheap too. I even saw on one site a full version 4 chasis for $40 bucks and thats a whole set of spares right there except for the electronics.

Perhaps I just need to purchase a #4 and with the extra cash I would spend on a 22e just get a ton of spares, reading the boards I have a decent idea what the most breakable parts are.

Then I should get the 22e for basic outdoor fff training and see how it goes from there. I do appreciate everyones help in these decesions though and look forward to making my first actual hover soon.

The VNR3D does not come stock with a brushless motor, but is extremely aggressive with the stock brushed motor.

I have the brushless upgrade, but have not installed it yet.

The quality of the machine seems very good. It is very quick, has a lot of power, and is quite fast in forward flight.

I am most impressed!

Well the #4 dragonfly is ordered, actually was looking to pickup a 22e as well and actually get both (heck it's about cheap enough) but cannot seem to find the deal I saw before, I think the bird was $124.99 and it came with a Airwolf fuse, 2 lipo batts and some spares and am sure it was on e-bay but no luck now [:o]

I got a WK#4 this week, and after 2 days and maybe 5 battery charges I am hovering quite well in my back garden for 20-30 seconds at a time tail in, staying within a 10ft area. I am extremely happy with this little bird and am improving every flight. Looking for my first mods now..
