You will notice that back in the days the terminal speeds already were very fast – many of these twenty year old nitro setups would be very competitive in their specific F3S-class - even this years Speedcup!

That makes sense since same ducted fan and speed engines and pipes are popular today (OPS, ROSSI, PICCO, OS). The propeller sizes and shapes remain similar as well but have been refined step by step (prop design evolution is one of the key factors). For instance if a certain CF propeller was used for different speed planes in the past (provided same engine output), actual speed planes usually do get their specific CF prop today.

During those German Speed-Cups in the 60s, 70s and 80s all times through the 200 m speed trap were recorded using plain manually operated stop watches. It turned out that the “human error factor“ was very small using two neutral (not R/C hobby affiliated) measuring crews simultaneously (= 4 stop watch results per fly through).

However to match the actual FAI specific time recording standards which became stricter over the past twenty years, the old style stopwatch method definately is too inaccurate. Not to mention the vast increase of safety by switching to a fully automated photo electric barrier measuring device.

Status: offline 		Dear I.L.J., again, THANKYOU for every bit of coverage of the FAI F3S Class events that you have taken the time to provide the rest of the world.
If somehow magicly we could have blow by blow video footage of the models and the speeds the guys the in late 70's, 80's, and early 90's achieved would'nt that be a special bit of history!!!

Guess I better move back over to the right hand lane of the highway.

This stuff is way beyond my capabilities.

The good thing is that I have reached my limitations as a pilot and am content.
