hi guys,
i can't tell from some of the pics but after i cut my elevators to match the plans i can't get enough(not happy with) rudder throw. are you guys cutting yours to plans size? it looks like i would have to cut an additional 2 inches from the back of elevator (slanted to hinge line) in order to get xtreem rudder throw....

Steve,

I cut mine as per plans, but looking at it I don't think it will allow for much movement. I am planning to make another cut out of the elevator to allow more throw.

I got the stab hinge lines beveled and drilled for Robart point hinges. I used the same bevel angle as the plans, but I beveled both the stab TE and elevator LE for maximum throw. Looks like more throw available than what I will be able to achieve mechanically with the servo linkages.

Thought I'd revive this thread a little bit. My yak is coming along nicely....I'm nearly finished with the construction phase and about ready to start finish sanding and covering.

I ended up tossing the hatch pieces into the scrap pile and started off on my own. I felt the plywood plate that comes with the kit was just too heavy. I also made a front dash out of some scrap foam and found a smaller instrument panel that looks a bit better proportioned with the rear instrument panel that was included with the kit.

Yeah, I've been a bit lazy lately. I switched jobs and haven't been spending too much time in the shop. But, I just got back from the JR Challenge and was psyched to see Mike Elder's Yak fly there. So, now that the Challenge is finished and I'm getting used to the new job, I'll be heading back into the shop to finish up mine.

One thing Mike told me is to definitely put functional louvers in the cowl. He had his cowl blow apart during practice due to air pressure building up inside the cowl.

Hey jmiricle, do you have any pictures of your completed motor box and engine mounted on it?

I don't have any photos of the completed motor-box with the engine mounted, but I can take some if there's something specific you need to see.

I don't think it matters much.....but I'm building the 35% version, not the 40%.

Thanks for the heads-up on the cowl....i don't like the look of the louvers, but I will make sure I have plenty of exit-area on mine. I don't remember from the pics I've seen if Mike is running a spinner on his yak or not. I would think a big spinner would help reduce some of the intake area on the front of the cowl....that should also help lower air pressure inside the cowl.

Hello,

Mike has several flight on the YAK. Functional louvers let alot of air out. He also had screws back out and that contributed to the problem. If mounted it wont move. But the 35% will float like he 40% for sure. Great meeting you Pete.

Thanks
John

Yes John I scorrect, I did have screws back out which helped attribute to the cowling blow off, the other problem that attributed to the cowl problem was not having enough exit area for the air. With the set-up I had I was only losing about 5% of the air through the exits holes that was coming in the front. You know that rule, atleast 3 times the exit air as intake air. Well I did not follow that because I figured with the big hole in the front I would only need minimal exit holes, well I was wrong. After my practise flights I refitted the cowling to fly at the Challenge, and open up a substantial amount for an exit hole, the functional louvers not only make the yak cowl a yak cowl but they will also allow you to open more exit holes without cutting the entire bottom of the cowl off.

Sorry if I interpreted this incorrectly to you at the challenge pcastine.

P.S. John i had a great time flying at the challenge with you guys, you truly make a great flying plane, my yak flew on rail all weekend and your new 300 mid wing tore up the freestyle flight I had without giving me any troubles. Keep up the good work and see you at the Venice Imac.

Dear Mike,
Congratulations for the JR video and flight.
Could you put a video of the Yak´s flight as well? I would love to see it.
Another request is, Could you send me some pics of your currently setup for the Yak´s cowl.
Did you do the fuctional louvers as suggested by John?
Did you use the origina ABS Louvers or have you ordered others?
If you want you can send the pis to my e-mail: marcelo.assis@sigmanet.com.br
Thanks a lot,
Marcelo.

Alright, despite the new job and the extra work, I'm slowly getting back in the shop. Got the right wing sheeted, now capped. I'm planning on cutting the tip in a curved manner, trying to emulate the full scale wing tip.

Because of the thick airfoil, looks like I'll end up with a blunt leading edge. Is this good for precision type flying? I thought I remembered that a blunt leading edge is good for 3D, it enhances stall characteristics. Is this true?

YOU HAVE IT A LITTLE BACKWARDS AS I UNDERSTAND AND HAVE BEEN TOLD FOR YEARS, BUT MAYBE I HAVE BEEN TOLD WRONG. AS I HAVE BEEN TOLD A SHRAP LEADING EDGE WILL MAKE THE PLANE STALL BETTER THUS MAKING CERTAIN IMAC MENAUVERS, SNAPS, SPINS, NEGATIVE SNAPS, THINGS LIKE THAT A LOT EASIER BECAUSE THE WING IS MORE PRONE TO STALL. A BLUNT LEADING EDGE MEANS THE LEADING EDGE IS NOT SHARP THUS MAKING IT MORE DIFFICULT TO STALL AND BEING BETTER FOR 3D ALLOWING THE AIRPLANE TO FLY AT MUCH LOWER AIRSPEEDS. THE TRICK THAT I HAVE LEARNED IS TO GET A LEADING EDGE THAT IS SHARP ENOUGH FOR IMAC YET BLUNT ENOUGH FOR 3D FLYING. IF YOU CAN GET THAT THEN YOU GOT THE PERFECT MIX BETWEEN THE TWO FLYING STYLES.

MARCELO - I WILL SEND YOU SOME PICS SOON, WE ARE GOING TO THE VENICE IMAC THIS WEEKEND AND I WILL TAKE SOME PHOTOS FOR YOU AND E-MAIL THEM ALSO. I HAVE A VIDEO OF THE YAK BUT AM STILL EDITING IT AS I HAVE BEEN BUSY WITH FAMILY PROBLEMS RIGHT NOW. THESE PROBLEMS HAVE SETTLED DOWN ENOUGH FOR ME TO GET BACK IN THE RYTHEM OF THINGS AND I HOPE TO HAVE THE VIDEO UP WITHIN THE NEXT WEKK OR SO.

MIKE

Does anyone have a good picture of the cowl on the cowl ring. Also are you guys making the cowl 1 piece or are you leaving them two pieces? Hope to get covering on mine as soon as I get back from Toledo.

Chris
