Twostroke, I've heard the same thing about the little engines, but my philosophy is that the regular starter turns it a H^ll of a lot faster than my little finger-digits can flip it! And you know, they've always seemed to start as long as they hav everything they're supposed to have...even when I'm breaking them in..

I'm about to break in my new Norvel .074, and I've never done one before. I asked about it nearly a year ago and got quite a lot of good and I think pretty sensible advice. I went back and found the thread last night and printed it out. Had to chuckle at the recommendation to squirt a little oil into the cylinder, replace the head and turn it over a few hundred times by hand... I'll probably kill the time by watching MacGyver while I'm doing it!

I started my 074 by cramming the starter on & spinning it till prime then fire up... maybe 4-6 seconds with the occasional finger over the exhaust to help prime. You can tell when it catches, but yes, the engine wants to idle faster than the starter was spinning. It's fun to take the starter off and hear the engine rev up to starting-high-idle. Rarely I would remove the starter at just the wrong time in the rotation cycle and the engine would die from starter drag too late after the cylinder fired, 1 in 20 I would have to bump it again.
---A good starting procedure and a standard starter are all you need.

KidEpoxy,

You may have just touched on why some people have had problems starting Norvels, especially by hand. They're a lot easier to start with the throttle open.

Most engines start better with a good dose of fuel in the cylinder...

Did you try 2nd chance hobbies in San Antonio / Universal City? I used to go there for all kinds of stuff.

I ventured out (in a rare condition for springtime in West Texas . . . calm winds) to see if I could get a flight or two with my Norvel powered Little Extra. We did get one flight out of it, but the glow element was pushed over to one side and the plug was cooling off and begging to be replaced.

But, there are no Norvel .074 plugs in the pantry. Worse yet, I even sold the things back when they were more plentiful.

Is there a hidden economics lesson in the fact that you can still get plugs for a 1960 model TeeDee, but not for a 2000 model Norvel?

Anyone know where we can purchase Norvels for a decent price? www.norvel.com and it's "shopatron" system has not been working for about 2 weeks now, please let me know if you know of another good website or mailorder location they can be found.
Thanks

I got mine at Quantum Models (www.quantummodels.com) at the usual going rate. They seem to have a pretty good selection.

In the left column, click on Manufactures/Norvel/Engines to see some of their selection. They appear to have two pages of Norvel engines and accessories.

I hope that this helps,

Bob

Sorry for such a basic question but I'm a little confused about the configuration of the Norvel heads. Are Norvel .061 Big Mig "glow plugs" one piece like the Cox .049s or are they a head plus a plug? If "one-piece" are these available anywhere? If not I checked the Sig site and they have NV110131 Head for XL plugs and NV110138 Freedom XL Glow Plugs...is that what I want to go with for replacement?

Thanks,

Rob

Upon closer inspection of the Sig site there seems to be a CLX .061 and a Big Mig Start-up .061. They look the same in the picture and I can't decipher the difference from the description. Both cost the same. What's the difference?

Thanks,

Rob

Okay, one more question and I'm done. I bought a "Nig Mig Start-up from eBay. It is inscribed "AMA 10" and does not have the bolted carb nor the spring loaded fuel tank vent. The box is marked "BS6", What vintage is this? As well...it cam with a very long (much more than necessary) length of fuel tube and a short slightly bent piece of brass tubing. Any ideas as to what they are for?

Thanks again,

Rob
