Default RE: Need Fedback on Nose Art.

As I stated above I am a combat veteran of the air war over Europe. If someone thinks we covered up the nose art when our wives and girlfriends showed up I'd like to know where he got that information. It wasn't done anywhere that I know of, even in the states when some of our birds were flown home for bond rallies and such. When I revisited Italy I took my wife to see the statue of David. Am I a pervert for that ? No more than we were perverts in the nose art department. Do you imagine that the pinups in the barracks were covered when family was allowed to visit ? No way in hell. I assume that abhorrence to nose art and pinups is inspired by some sort of religious intolerance. Consider that religion has inspired more crimes against humanity than any other cause. As witness I refer to 9-11. We have the right to worship any way that appeals to us but we have absolutely no right to force these beliefs on any one else. The morals and ethics of this country have deteriorated into PC and in my opinion that is just as bad as any Muslim fanatic on Jihad.
On this soap box I could go on and on but I know better. Remember George Santyana's reminder to all philosophers. "Those who will not study history will be condemned to live it again". Nose art is, and always will be, a part of our past. If you deny it you deny truth.

I totally agree with F4u5. Being 33 i have not had to endure what these service men and woman have been put through. To put 19-20 yr olds in B-17's fly them overseas scared sh**less. I owe them my freedom. So if they want to put noseart on their planes so be it. As far as R/C planes goes if it's to represent an certain plane at an certain time then by all means make it an exact duplication. I will not be offended. And when my kids ask about the R/C noseart then i can give them an quick history lesson. Included is an pic of my late LT-40 which augured in on it's maiden. Defective switch harness. Amy is my G/F name and her age included in the pic. On the nose of an LT-40 is so small you really have to be up close and personal to even notice it.

Terry:
Did you ever build the P-39? It is a difficult subject due to the nose gear hitting the head of the model engine. There was a guy here in Denver that built one and put the model engine in the scale location. He was a machinist and he made the extra long crank shaft.

Dick T:
Do you have a web site?

Is there any truth that the Systine Chapel in St. Peters in Rome is off limits to the easily offended American tourists due to the nudes on the ceiling?

I still have not completed the model. Everytime I get a chance to get back to it another kool project pops up. I was all set to start back at it after the first of the year, but a B-17 fell right into my lap.
I will get around to finishing it before long though. It will be finished in the scheme of the racer "Cobra II".

Hi Terry,
I have wanted to do a p39 for a long time.
That nose art (airacutie) looks fantastic and fits the time, perfect for a scale bird.
If anyone has a good file of this I would love to get my hands on it and make it airborne.
Thanks Mark

I posted these links on a jet thread, but these stand to illustrate racy nose art extended into the jet era as well. I've even seen mostly naked muscle guys painted on F-15E's now that there are a lot of female aircrews. Like it or not, its part of the warbird genre. These schemes are so good (look at the refueling port) I think I'll have to build an F-105 some day.

Amazing about the last WWl vet finally passing. Also good to see only a couple of ninnys here out of the bunch. But we must all be aware, the few offended coolaid drinkers have also experienced great hardship such as what scarf to wear with their Cardigan. There is NO reason to be offended by any historical noseart and if one is LOOK THE OTHER WAY!! Luke, that pic was truly offensive as I found myself LMAO, twisted!! Ova, Nick Pockets

I think a part of what is fueling the debate is the influence of pornography that has overrun the culture at large and blurred the nature of nudity in all contexts. I myself am not so much into the nudes on the ships of the era, but if the scale accuracy is there then that's fine by me. It feels like some(and I make absolutely no assertions of any individuals here) maybe using historical reality to extend the purient interest to the modeling environment, yet to point the finger to an individual simply can't be done. Finally, my heart goes out to the souls of those young men that hopped into those machines and flew them, and as close to the real thing they were ever going to see was that glorious hope painted on the nose before they were lost to us forever.

Well if the shoe fits I'll wear it, I have wanted to build a p39 for a long time, and if a particular theme caught my eye then so be it.
The fact is that was a flying warbird, myself as an ex serviceman I feel proud to pay homage to those who fell during their service.
If it happens to be a racey theme on a warbird then I'm ok with that.
My club is full of male members and all of them would love to see a replica of that bird.
I showed my wife and mother in law the pics of airacutie and they didn't have a problem with them at all.
I think Americans are a little prudish in general. Australians tend to be a little more laid back and accepting, so perhaps that's where the difference lies.
Did you ever serve your country Roary?

Yes, I am a veteran; USAF, SAC. I hope those reading what I have posted will not read into it an attitude of judgementalism since it was a series of observations I thought would be helpful in understanding the nature of the topic. To revise the history nose art regardless of how racy it might be, I agree, is to show contempt for those who served. As for myself, I am perhaps a bit on the prudish side, though not entirely. My ASM Black Widow is MoonHappy and she's got some big guns on the roof, big guns.

BTW, it was around 1990 and I would have nothing to do with scale. A friend showed me what kind of aerobatics a scale plane could be capable of, his being a redbox P 39 with a K&B 61 with fixed gear. He was doing tumbles with it and I was sold on scale ever since. The P 39, I think, is one of the best scale planes for aerobatics, not to mention ground handling.
