Just got a brand new Irvine 53 engine. For some reason, mine did not come
in with instructions. Usually instructions give some suggestions for needle
settings, fuel type and break in suggestions. So my questions are:

1- How many turns should the needle valve be. I hate guessing.

2- I have FAI, 5% and 10% fuel. Which one should I use. What Oil content
%?

3- Should I run it in in the air or run a few tanks on the ground?

4- I have a 11x4 top flite and 12x6 APC prop. Which should I use first?
Or should I go to the hobby store and get a different kind.

Thanks in advance!

Phil

1- How many turns should the needle valve be. I hate guessing.

The instructions say 1 3/4 turns out on the main needle, and adjust from there.

Mine have always been right on the money as they came.

(As a side note, I have some Irvine 25's that I bought for Combat..they were mounted on the plane, started and flew with no running in at all...one of them I NEVER touched either needle!! That is the first time that ever happened.)

2- I have FAI, 5% and 10% fuel. Which one should I use. What Oil content
%?

The instructions say to use anything from FAI to 15% depending on the style of flying, with 20% oil.

I use Powermaster 10% in mine with fine results.

3- Should I run it in in the air or run a few tanks on the ground?

The instructions say to run the engine for short periods of 2~3 minutes with cooling periods in between, and a needle setting that is just slightly richer than peak (do not run this engine in a rich, four-stroke for break-in!) and to do the run-in at full throttle.

There are as many different methods for break-in as there are engines, this is what the instructions for this engine say.

4- I have a 11x4 top flite and 12x6 APC prop. Which should I use first?
Or should I go to the hobby store and get a different kind.

Either of those props will run on this engine..the prop selection has a lot to do with the type of plane the engine is mounted in.

I use an APC 12.25 X 3.75 and APC 12X4 props as my favorites on a SE.

If you would like the entire set of papers that came with an Irvine 53, just e-mail me your address and I'll mail them to you.

I might be wrong, but did you check between the foam and the cardboard top of the box?
When I (hurriedly and excitedly) oppened the box of my .53 I noritced that there were no instructions...
Luckily when showing off to some buddies the foam pried away from the top of the box and voilá there were the instrucions
Best Regards,
Patrick

where did you guys get your .53s? Sig's price seems a little steep for a .53? Thanks,
Eric

I hope the Euro doesn't mess a good thing up but the Irvine .53 at around US$100 is a good deal... you can get them at:

I bought the engine from justengines and the total cost delivered to New York was $107.

I checked the box and, no, the instructions were not in the top.

I think it is about the perfect engine for this plane...even with the stock muffler I think it would be great, but the UT muffler/12.25 X 3.75 APC combo is gonna be hard to beat IMHO.

http://www.pspec.com/

Click on the UT Muffler tab..the OS 46 is the one I use...seems like they are both the same (SF & FX), ask Dave.

My 53 turned the 12.25 X 3.75 14,700RPM on 10% fuel..15.5K on the 12X4. That was when it was being broken in..I haven't tached it since then.

Just to clear something up, the reason the price you see from Sig is high is because Sig is the US distributor for Irvine, and since they only discount to authorized distributors (i.e. hobby shops), they will only quote/publish the full LIST price. There are discounted Irvine prices from many hobby shops in the US. That said, though, as others have said, the folks at Just Engines are great to do business with.

I am also running a Sig SE with a Irvine .53 on an APC 12.25 X 3.75 prop and I can do a verticle take-off out of my hand. Running Sig 15% champion fuel.
