i found that the added weight and reduced operating time killed my flying fun with the gws dd tail. obviously there is a spot on this tail for the mounting of the stock setup, how in the heck do i mount it so it works. the stock blade is designed to spin one direction and cant be flipped over, how and where do i find a tail rotor that will work. i really dont feel like changing out tail sections again because of the generous amounts of CA glue i used. any help would be appreciated .

Your the first person I have ever heard that didn't like the DD tail. Going back to the stock tail is just insane. Did you setup the DD tail correctly? What exactly don't you like about it?

i just swaped to the dd tail about 2 weeks ago. and i too noticed the full power flight times went down to about 4 min. it drains your stock battery fast. i switched to the 3 cell lipo about 4 days ago. and just bought a 8t pinion and put that on my motor so i didn't have to buy a new motor. and i get 15-20 min of full power flying and you will love the dd tail it's so stable. i'd recomend upgrading battery. and you will be done with upgrades and have a stable heli that will fly forever

well i am still running nimh batteries and my run times are about 5 minutes long, which makes it very hard to setup the 4-1 properly . maybe its just my whirlybird but every time i get it off the ground the tail drops like a rock. i have even cut the tail boom down 1" but to no avail. the tail rotor can barely take a hit, hell just looking at it i think it broke, the tail support is a joke it provides very little support if any. the set screws on the blade adapter are a freakin joke, you cant even tighten it down without the allen wrench spinning inside the set screw. yes i applied loc-tite to the screws but it still doesnt even hold the adapter on. after about 3 tail rotors flying off i decided to use a dab of ca glue, which works pretty well but is a pain to get off. i really am tired of messing with this tail, maybe if i got lipo's it would help with the tail control issues but then all of the other problems just arent worth it.

so, does anyone know which rotor to buy for this dd tail so i can make my stock tail gear work?

laters,
shaun h

If you want your stock tail gear to work just put all of your stock parts back on .

the direct drive tail system is a new motor and the prop hooks directly to the motor shaft so you dont have any gears. it's alot quieter, smoother, no gears to strip, no slop, keeps tail from drifting. very nice. here's a site that has a complete right up of the switch over, i ordered everthing there from towerhobbies.com. and got everthing for 19$ + s/h. best upgrade ever

once you get to where your gonna be flying your blade, the stock battery willnot do. it will give you 7-8 min of full flying and that's not enough, by the time you get it going, trimmed out, and flying, your batteries are dying. a 3 cell pack will be a must later on. if you do it now, it's so much easier, it can get it trimmed and it'l stay that way for 15 min. 20 if you have stock tail. you will find if you go back to stock tail system you'll always be correcting it. if you are having trouble flying this thing make it easy on yourself and get the dd tail with lipo, you can keep the flat bottom blades, and everything else stock. it's a whole new bird. a more stable one and much easier and predictable. i love it.

only on the ground at full runner input can i hear it. you probably wont be giving full rudder in the air. my buddy has a blade and his is much louder, mines got a deeper (quieter) humm, you may hear the motor every now and then but it's definely quieter than the gear meshing of the stock one. just my experience. from what i hear the motors are hit and miss, even the stock ones? now my main gear is loud and whiney?

I do read much.

If you want a stock setup, go get some debonder and put the stock gear back on.

You don't like the dd setup, you think the whole thing is a joke. It'll break when you just look at it blah blah blah blah.

It's gotta be the way you've got it setup. I'm running the dd and it works great, keeps the tail much more stable. I've crashed a few times due to high gusts of wind (haha yea right!) and the tail prop guard has held up great. At $2.50 it's worth every penny. I'm running the GWS 4530 prop with the motor covered in as much heat sink as I could fit.

The run times do go down a bit but with lipos you'll never miss it.

Go hear and read: www.bladecprepair.com .

lipo's make all the difference in the dd. the tail would wonder on mine stock, and about the time i got it trimmed out it's start wondering cause the battery was going. so i went to the dd. and it just drained the batts faster, the lipos are a dream. usually im tired of it before the battery runs dead. and i didn't have to cut anything off my tail boom. i hear some people did. that may change when i take my training gear off it may be weighting the front. dont know? i did have to move my battery most the way forward but not all the way?
