Lockheed P-3 Orion
Anyone interested in a P-3 or any variant. I am putting together plans for a 90" span EP-3. I have 2/3 of a fuse built that is about 5 ft long and 10" in dia. This first plane is a prototype that will not fly but is for "proof of concept" and getting formers/shape correct.
Expected weight will be 15 to 20 lbs. Will be about 6 to 8 mos before these are ready as i want to put one in the air before I put plans out.
Am using Compufoil for the wing design. Good software and OUTSTANDING support from Eric.

I had kicked around doing a P-3 before, I'm involved in something else that will take me thru a good part of next year though... I think it would be neat. Several C-130s have been done - a P-3 would be diferent. One guy in our club started on drawings for a Neptune - I don't think he's very far along. 90 inch span sounds reasonable. What motors will you be using?

I'm thinking along the lines of .35 - .40. A friend at work who is into electrics is trying to talk me into going electric. Will decide when I get a good guesstimate at weight. Not looking for torque roll power, just enough to get up down and around!

You may even be able to get away with smaller motors. I think I remember a large C-130 model (Skip Mast?) that used 4 .20 or .25 size motors. I agree with the torque rolling - you'd want motors that were reliable more than anything else. And the ability to turn a reasonable looking prop, diameter-wise. You could even have it pop out little fake sono-buoys!
I had seen photos somewhere of a Japanese operated P-3 with a really unusual color scheme, if I remember correctly...

Jeff, I can't believe it! I have spent the better part of the day looking for P-3 plans! I've toyed with the idea for years having been a U.S. Navy P-3 Flight Engineer for 11 years, my eyes & Navy medical ended my flying. The nacelles and Fowler flaps kept scaring me off of the task. I'm am most interested in this project. Let me know if you need anything, technical data, drawings, true dimensions, C.G. info, etc... Do you have any pics of the progress? Let me know if you need anything.

Thanks for the interest in the P-3! it keeps me focused!
Ron - remember the C-130 span is longer than the fuse, The P-3 fuse is longer than the span so I might be a little hesitant to use smaller than a .35! With a 90" span I'm looking at around 96" in length. The mad boom will make it even longer 'coz I'm doing an EP-3..

You may be right with the engine selection. I haven't looked at a three-view recently. Better to have a bit more power, than not enough. Anyway, I hope you do this project - it would be neat to see.
How do you plan your construction? Do you see this as built up fuselage, or fiberglass?
I remember as a kid, seeing these things fly over the Chicago area, from either Great Lakes or Glenview NAS...

After four or five large cups, taste doesn't seem to matter any more. Its one of the tastiest ways to get drunk and have a good time. I think the civillian authorities would have a heart attack if they saw some of the things we got up to in the Hilton (groundcrew bar) and various bars in Forres.
I seem to remember that u guys had some very fine looking female ground crew with you ? They looked very good at one of the toga parties!!!!!
Happy days LOL

Hi JMODGUY,
I'd be interested in a set of plans also. FYI, I've got a Stafford B-24D that's powered by 4 Saito 30's and weights 17lb + and it has more than enough power. Just my 2 cents on the engines.

This will be a display model. I am designing and building the fuse at the same time so I can get the correct shape. So far so good. The next will fly. Not sure if I will make a glass fuse. Seems like a really BIG plug to store somewhere. Will make glass nacelles and cowls tho along with forward and aft radomes.

Jmodguy, we are embarking on similar quests, maybe we can share some R&D processes, look at the thread in the "kit building" forum called"help building ATR twin turboprop". I'm looking for a better way to build the tapered section and the cabin section of the fuselage, the main fuselage will be foam core over a box.

P-3 status
Sorry for not keeping up with this but I have been pretty busy with work and family so progress has been a bit slow. I have worked out the main wing design and have one panel built up and partially sheeted. THe next long pole in the tent will be the nacelles and cowls.
Will try to keep this updated more often

RE: Lockheed P-3 Orion
Jeff,
I was a P-3 Flight Engineer for 10 years and have just started RC recently. I'm very interested in a P-3 kit as a future model to add to my collection someday. Do you have an update?
