Thanks for considering PowerfLite Packs for your Piccolo Electric Helicopter. We have been working very closely with Rob White, a Piccolo pilot who does testing for IKARUS. He has had great success with our Polymer and Prismatic Packs. At this time, I am not aware of what motor and other equipment he uses, but he has told me our Lithium Poly & Prismatic give his Piccolo "TRUE" 3D capabilities for an extended period (much longer than he had anticipated).

After I meet up with him in Toledo at this weekend's trade show, I will have some more raw data for you.

Keep on R/Cin'!

I think this is the $20,000 question but I don't see it answered. I thought I had read through all of the posts after Red's post....but I have been wrong before (actually it was just seconds ago ).

How do you test Li batteries to determine when they are likely to fail?

Sorry for the delayed reply. I quote a comment from Chester Simpson of National Semiconductor ... "At present, there are no known problems which appear significant enough to prevent Li-Ion from successfully penetrating the high-end consumer market."

Having said that, let me add that in our research, Skyborn Electronics / PowerfLite have found that less than 1% of OUR Lithium Ion Packs ever actually fail. In most cases, the failure was found when an aircraft was safely on the ground. In other instances, the consumer had altered the packs design in some way. We have found this low failure rate to be within or actually below the overall fail rate in R/C with regards to batteries. Rest assured that Lithium Ion batteries have early indicators that will "predict" a pack or cell failing.

These would include, but not be limited to...

Failure of the pack to hold nominal voltage under a minimum load test of one amp...

Failure of the pack to reach a full true peak charge...

A decrease ... noticeable decrease ... in flight times between charge cycles...

To best answer your question, allow me to state that there is no "magic tool" or "special piece of equipment" that will tell you ANY battery pack is going to fail in X number of uses ... Ni-Cd, Ni-MH, Li-Ion, Lithium Poly, etc. Just use common sense and check your batteries as often as you need to make you feel comfortable.

Hope I helped.

Mark, I reposted this question here at your request. I look forward to your thoughts and insights.
On the weekend I bought one of those helium filled Zepplins from Megatech for my son. It is powered by a 3.0V Cr123 Lithium battery which I bought at RadioShack for $8. My son loved the toy, flying all around the house (sure my wife loved it). Anyways after only 2 days the battery finally died. I’ll go broke buying these batteries at $8 each at this rate. I have since found that these batteries can be found much cheaper in bulk but still don't say rechargeable. So my questions are:

Are Lithium batteries the same thing as Lithium-ion Lithium-poly or Li-metal batteries? Are all or none of them rechargeable Where can I find a reference on Lithium batteries to understand all these different types ?

If it’s not officially rechargeable, is there anyway I can recharge this battery, maybe a very slow trickle ?

Can I put 2 of them together and recharge them as a 6V battery.
Is there a rechargeable equivalent ? etc.
Thanks for your help. I have a Triton charger for my other R/C batteries, but can it be used here ? Thanks

Hope I can assist you. First suggestion I would make is that you look for a copy of the book "Batteries In A Portable World" ... it is THE best source of info on ALL types of batteries not just Lithium. It can be found at any of the several on-line bookstores or at your local book shop or library. It will help you better understand "All these different types of Lithiums" and I admit, it can seem a bit overwhelming.

The Radioshack CR123 is a 1400mAh, 3V Lithium Photo Battery comparable to the older Duracell DL123, Eveready EL123AP or CR123. Its shelf life is an estimated 10 years but it is not recommended for use with amp needs higher than about one amp. My guess is, that battery is not a good choice for the blimp you are powering.

The battery you have is a photo cell ... not rechargeable ... and once it is dead, it is for all practical purposes ... gone. The lithium Ion and Lithium Polymers PowerfLite carries are most defiantly rechargeable and we have cells that will meet your needs.

The Triton charger WILL work with our packs and cells. Please give us a call and we will assist you as best we can.

He has a 3 cell 1400mAh Lithium-Ion and a TRITON charger. He wants to know the normal mAh charge setting and the fast charge mAh setting.

Hope I helped.

Question from a nitro truck user:

Would it be a good idea to use 7.4 volt Lithium polymer batt to power my radio/servos ?

- I have a JR XS3 BEC receiver
- I use HITEC 5945 premium digital servo with high perf coreless motor.

I just want to find out if:

1- BEC receiver should be able to handle the "over 6 volt" batt
2- If the use of high drain high end servos are compatible with Li Poly batt

BTW, I saw on Tower Hobbies that KOKAM USA will have 1500 mA Li Poly available on mid september....would it be the best choice for my application ?

http://www2.towerhobbies.com/cgi-bin/WTI0097p?MANUFACTURER=KKM

So far, it seems it would be better than regular 5 cell NiMh that pumps out 1200 mA max, are twice the weight and twice the size...

If it does work, I can see it as being a big hit for r/c nitro cars !

Any other though ?

Tks

Hi Rick. I'm using 2 powerflite 4000 packs an a 2000 pack in my 40% Carden Extra and would first like to say how pleased I am with your products. Although, I do have one quick question to bug you with. Will your AC/DC 3 output 7.2V charger charge a homemade 2 cell polymer 7.2V pack without a problem? Thanks loads in advance, and thanks for the great products once again.
