The Nylon Locking Nuts on the back side will be captured. They are not in my picture, but I figured out a way to effectively capture them in the laminate. It will take me a few days before I can post the solution on this. What will be nice about this cowl attachment strategy is that the fasteners are flush, scale looking, the threaded part will be captured, and the nylon lock nuts will stop them from vibrating out. So if it all works out as planned I couldn't think of a better way to go.

Top part of the cowl is a flush fit to the fuselage so there is no overlap. It is designed to be bonded permanently to the airplane and then the join is filled and sanded.

Status: offline 		Here is my method to effectively capture the nylon lock nuts on the inside of the laminate. I made some little vacuum formed "Nut-Caps". A mixture of resin and filler is applied around the nut and then the "Nut-Cap" is pressed over the top. They work great. I actually think I may have created a new product to start making. We will see. The result is a clean secure looking installation. Now on to finalize the firewall perimeter ring. Leo

Status: offline 		I changed the lock-nut strategy again. Sometimes you have to try something before you learn a better way. I wasn't getting good adhesion between the white styrene caps I had made and my resin. That forced me to come up with a new idea. I like this one better anyway. I bought some 3/16" plywood and drilled partial depth holes that the Nylon locking nuts are pressed into. This looks good. The nuts are captured in the wood and they cannot turn or push through. The wood has good adhesion to the vinylester resin I use, plus being square I am able to put a small fillet around the edges to capture them. I think it is an improvement. This is what I am moving forward with. In the pictures you will now see the 1/8" firewall former that is glassed into the back of the cowl. This will be epoxy bonded to the firewall of the airplane. Cowling #1 is done! Leo

Micheal, The razor back conversion kit is next. Now that I have the cowl done this will be my focus. With the speed I've been moving at I figure it will be done around March 08. I don't expect it to be nearly as difficult to make as this cowling was. I plan for it to be a flush-fit with the sidewalls of the fuse and to have an internal balsa structure that will allow it to be bonded right on as a top cap. The stab is moving up by something like 5/8" to be in the scale location. The top cap will have the stab to vertical stab fillets built in. I sold one already for $90 and it is not even finished. That is a good target price for now. PM me if you are interested. Mold progress will be posted here moving forward. Leo

Status: offline 		Mmmmmm! Laser cut parts. What a beautiful thing. I'm glad somebody created this technology. I just can't think of any other way that a person could cut parts like these cowl screens without damaging the wood. I've got a good supply of them now and the fit check on both sides of the cowl was perfect. I figure that the customer can open up the recess area on both sides of the cowl with a dremel and leave a ledge to bond the screen to. This will provide a little more cooling and give the cowl the right look with shadows from holes that are actually there. You can also see some pictures showing my DA-50 within the cowl opening. It is equiped with a 1.25" prop extension from Sierra Giant Scale. I have learned from running this extension on a Spitfire and a Mustang for the past year that you need to change the back crankase cover bolts to steel versus aluminum that the engine comes with or they will stretch and you will blow out the case gasket. This is data for a later forum thread that I will detail someday. Leo

Looks great, love those screens.

Very interesting comment regarding the crankcase bolts, something else I need to add to my modifications list. How does the extension cause the bolts to stretch? I wouldn't have thought there would be any additional in-line thrust but perhaps a little more centrifugal force?

Sure. $5 a set. I will cover the postage. Send me a PM. As soon as I saw them today I knew people would want them separately for just about any 1/5th scale Mustang they have. I have to figure out what to call them. I think they are "Cowl Screens". For fun let's compare how they look. Macon Belle's Screen Left and Scale Screen Right. Leo

Status: offline 		The perforated panel is a cover for the carburetor air filter. There are several pictures of P-51s, especially during the winter, where that panel didn't have any holes in it at all and it was just a solid plate, so if modellers were not to add any holes in this area that could still be correct.

I'm building a 1/6 size P-51, but your panel might be a little too big for my application. Can you provide the length and height of the pieces you made?

Tim, The dimensions are 2.800" Long X 1.520" Wide X .033" Thick (1/32" Ply). They are 1/5th scale as measured off Kermit Weeks Macon Belle in Polk City FL. It is surprising how big they need to be in order to be scale. Leo
