ORIGINAL: sdougm Hi! I see you fantastic cowl job and like know if it can be used in kit version of TF P-51 1/5... and if it can be used i like know how much you want for one unit of this cowl Thanks Doug
Doug,
The answers to all your questions are yes, but I will send you a PM (Private Message) with all the details. RCU gets a little uptight when sales & transactions start to happen in the forum pages versus in the marketplace area of the site. So I don't want to violate their desires. Look for a detailed PM from me. Leo
Other people to talk to on scale props are KMP (Kondor Model Products) http://www.kmp.ca/ They are making some really cool scale flying props. I don't know if he has one big enough or not.

I wet sanded the "B" model razor back plug today with 400. Taped off the edges, waxed it 3 times and then shot it with PVA. Sprayed orange polyester tooling gel and then laminated the mold. Things are looking good. I will let it cure for a day and then add some plywood supports to it before pulling it off the plug. Leo

I glassed some plywood reinforcements to the outside of the mold and then pulled it off the plug. The mold looks fantastic and it is a good thing because the plug was destroyed in the process. No problem. I carefully sanded down to the trim edges. The next step is to laminate a sample part and then trim it with the arc of the back windows. That will become another trim edge in the mold. Razorback Part #1. The first part is always trial and error. This is not a good part, but it helps a person learn how to make a good one. I laminated in some 3/8" square balsa stock on the lower edges for bonding it to the fuse. This will be a great concept, but I think I can drop it down to 1/4" square. I also struggled greatly with laminating the tight curves for the radii fairings in the back. I need to go to some lighter glass in this area and do multiple layers to get it right. This piece will serve well as a cutting pattern for the rear window an help me finish the cut lines on the mold. Part #2 should be made on Sat. and posted Sun. Leo

Worked on cutting and trimming the curved window openings near the back of the Top Flite canopy to fit the fiberglass part. Once I had it I then scribed these shapes into the mold and cut the areas away so I can then trim against these edges and offer the customer this feature in the completed part. By handling the part I have determined to add one former just behind the cockpit for stiffening. I am happy with the overall fit and design concept. Next I will make a couple parts. Leo

Laminated what should be the first good Razorback tonight. Went with 3 layers of really light cloth on the back fillets. It worked well. Nothing like clothes pins for clamps. You can get 90 of them for under $2. Hard to beat that. I will let this cure overnight and pop it tomorrow morning. Leo

Dumb question, but where did you get the canopy?
Canopies are available from TopFlite (Great Planes) for something like $28 plus shipping. I personally bought 6 of them during this past year. They still make them for the discontinued B/C model of the plane they used to make in kit form. I sure hope they continue to keep making them because this whole Razorback concept is based on that canopy as a custom fit. I do not include the canopy in the Razorback kit I am providing.
Popped the part this morning. Fantastic! I like it. Lot's of work to get to this point, but worth it when you hold the final part in your hands. I think I'll make another one tonight. 3 people are waiting on them already. If you're interested, send me a PM. I will advertise it here on RCU once I get the backlog caught up. Leo
