ORIGINAL: RVM Just ordered my Saito FA-125a. Hopefully I can relearn how to fly and be in another Ultimate by mid-summer! Lots of great info here in your thread for when I start on my kit. I was wondering if you had thought of anything you could do to make your plane lighter? My last CG kit, 10 years or so ago, was a Super Chipmunk. I was able to get the weight down around 7.5lbs AUW, but I was not a great builder. Hopefully I can keep the Ultimate at 7lbs or so, AUW. What have you done to keep your plane so light? I was planning on microservers, Li-Po batteries, kevlar, carbon fiber etc. to help. Maybe even replace some of the wood with lighter forms. Can you imagine this plane with the 1.25 around 7lbs? Heck, I am thinking that even at your estimated 8lbs AUW it will hover at 1/2 or 3/5 throttle, with the right prop. Well, maybe not quite, but you get the point! I honestly didn't do much of anything to lighten her up other than buying foam wheels & a plastic spinner. I did do a lot of pre-covering balancing to make sure I didn't have to add any weight to get the CG right later. I'll certainly post what my final weight is, I'm just hoping it will be 8. It will probably be 15 with all the monokote trim I put on. As for what I could suggest to lighten it up.... Obviously going with lighter sheeting would save a few ounces, but I'm not sure how that impacts strength. The whole build seemed pretty light from my limited experience. I couldn't really see where I could cut any wood out to lighten it up. I should have it all together this weekend, so we'll know soon enough.
