It is soft annealled copper for hooking up manual oil psi gauges. I can get the part# tommorow if you want.

Just ordered my Saito FA-125a. Hopefully I can relearn how to fly and be in another Ultimate by mid-summer! Lots of great info here in your thread for when I start on my kit.

I was wondering if you had thought of anything you could do to make your plane lighter? My last CG kit, 10 years or so ago, was a Super Chipmunk. I was able to get the weight down around 7.5lbs AUW, but I was not a great builder. Hopefully I can keep the Ultimate at 7lbs or so, AUW. What have you done to keep your plane so light? I was planning on microservers, Li-Po batteries, kevlar, carbon fiber etc. to help. Maybe even replace some of the wood with lighter forms. Can you imagine this plane with the 1.25 around 7lbs? Heck, I am thinking that even at your estimated 8lbs AUW it will hover at 1/2 or 3/5 throttle, with the right prop. Well, maybe not quite, but you get the point!

I found it and got it installed in the exhaust. I used copper tubing from Ace Hardware used for air conditioning. It's a little thick though. I think I can test it this weekend.

I honestly didn't do much of anything to lighten her up other than buying foam wheels & a plastic spinner. I did do a lot of pre-covering balancing to make sure I didn't have to add any weight to get the CG right later.
I'll certainly post what my final weight is, I'm just hoping it will be 8. It will probably be 15 with all the monokote trim I put on.

As for what I could suggest to lighten it up.... Obviously going with lighter sheeting would save a few ounces, but I'm not sure how that impacts strength. The whole build seemed pretty light from my limited experience. I couldn't really see where I could cut any wood out to lighten it up.

I should have it all together this weekend, so we'll know soon enough.

OK, I'm pretty much done covering. I still have to add a few decal's, but I figured I'd throw it together on the floor so you could all get a peek at what it looks like together. (once again, no laughing)

I was a little dissapointed in the checkers on the front. I spent most of last night trying to cut out stretched checkers to blend from the normal checkers on top into the black pin stripe on the side. lets just say I settled with the solid black trim piece because it was a disaster...

Let me know what you guys think.

Your plane looks really good! You'd better get someone to make some videos of your first flights!

What building surface did you use? I don't really have the money to go with a full magnetic set up so I'll be using pins just as I always have. I used to use styrofoam under the plans. It looks like you used drywall sheeting or something in the pics. I can't tell what it is. How did you get it perfectly flat?

Thanks. I've already got a friend of mine lined up to take video of the maiden.

My work bench surface is topped with 3/4" MDF which is very flat and smooth. I then bought a couple smooth drop ceiling tiles from Menards to lay on top to give me something to stick my pins into. It works real well.
The real key is to get a very flat work surface. You'll see that many people buy a hollow core door & lay it on their bench for a flat surface. I've heard of others using an old glass table top too.

I was able to get everything done except the wheel pants & the aileron linkages yesterday. I need to make one more trip to the LHS today becuase I have to get one more pair of ball connectors for the aileron servo's.

Well my wishful thinking on the weight was just that. My final weight was exactly 9 lbs. fully assembled (threw the wheel pants on the scale too). I did go with a larger 6V 2000mah batter which weighs about 4 ounces more than the 1200 mah I weighed it with earlier. The APC prop is also pretty heavy. I could probably kill half a pound by using a smaller battery & a wooden prop, but I'll leave everything as is unless it won't take off from being too heavy.

Becuase I'm using dual elevator servos I taped a couple of straight straws on the elevators to make sure they were in sync all the way up & down. The digital servo's were dead on, I didn't have to adjust anything.

9 lbs! Ugh! Oh well they should still fly well. How did your CG turn out?
The covering looks great, I bet it will show up good.
I'm breaking in my engine today. I capped off the smoke oil lines and ran it at five turns out at 3500 RPM for a tank of fuel with the glow ignitor on the whole time. I just charged the glow ignitor and I'm off to tune it a little closer for 2 more tanks and then the smoke test.

I added the new nipple on the exhaust. The new one is for the tank because it's ahead of the oil outlet inside.
