Does anyone in this forum fly any of the Yellow Aircraft warbirds? I just received the Yellow P40 and am undecided on using the ZDZ60 or ZDZ80. I am looking for insight / advise from you folks with giant scale warbird experience.

Thanks in advance for your help,
Banks

Banks:

What is Yellow saying the final weight will be? I had a YA P-47 that weighed 24 pounds. I had a Zenoah G-62 in it and it had more than enought power. I would think the ZDZ 80 might be a little on the big side.

K_sonn,

At this time, I am assuming it will be close to the 20-25 lb. range. I am still waiting on the build instructions, drawings, and wing tips . They are supposed to be here soon. Until then, I cannot accurately answer your question (

Banks, I fly a Yellow Spitfire with the 3W-60 and it provided the nose weight we needed and the extra power if needed. I would think the P-47 would be a good match for the 3W60 with the 80 being a bit much. The 60 seems to have a good deal more power than the G-62 has. Hope this helps.

it sounds like Yellow is now shipping the P-40.....how does it look? Any obvious problems that you can see?....I fly 1/5 scale warbirds and always put the biggest engine I can fit without having it hang out the cowl.....you can always throttle back

Banks,

I fly a Yellow Jug with a G-45 at 22 lbs and no nose weight.
It is VERY fast and really scale at around a third throttle.

I also have a Yellow Spit with a G-38 at 26 lbs with 2.5 lbs of non cc material on the firewall. It barely sticks out of the cowl. It too is fast, but bleeds off speed in the military climb outs. Speed is as fast as the Jug. 1/2 hour flights on 24 oz tank too .

I have a Yellow Zero with a G-45 at 28 lbs. About 3 lbs of that non CC material in the cowl. I haven't flown this one yet.

And Santa is bringing me a Yellow P-38 with G-38s on ignition right after Cristmas. Weight is around 36 lbs

My family will be getting coal for X-mas

I like Zenoa engines... I would use a G-62(it should fit) and keep fuse servos within cg range with the batteries to nail th cg.
Zenoas are inexpensive and reliable

I hope to be adding The P-40 to my stable late next year...

LA7flier and Alleymutt,

As far as I can see and with my limited knowledge in giant scale, the Yellow P40 is absolutely beautiful. The quality that you are accustomed to from Yellow is evident in the P40 kit. I own two Yellow kits (P40 & F16) with another 3 to be purchased in the near future. I do not have the wing tips, plans, or build instructions for the P40 yet (and some other items I can't think of right now), but they will be in shortly. The wings look nice. I had a small fracture on the bottom sheeting that ran parallel to the sheeting joint directly above the main spar hole, but a little CA fixed that. Other than that, I found no problems with my kit. IT appears as though this kit will go together nicely.

Regarding the engine, a ZDZ60 or 80 will fit inside of the cowl easily. As a matter of fact, I bet one could put two of either or in there running in-line and still have room. My issue though, is with the power. I was concerned about using the ZDZ 80 since Yellow recommends up to a 60. I had visions of placing a space shuttle booster rocket onto an ultralight. Overpowering is one thing, but overpowering and jeopardizing structural integrity is another. My thought was "If people are using the ZDZ80 or equivalent in other Yellow kits, then I would feel comfortable trying it in the P40."

Banks

I think a G62 will be a good engine for this plane. I think theres plenty of cowl space for it also. You may find one online for 300-350 and it runs great and very reliable.

Just a thought.

My .02 on the subject:

I doubt a G-45 or G-62 will work in the P-40 and provide a scale look. If the P-40's cowl space is similar to the Yellow Spitfire, I can see the advantage of using the ZDZ or 3W rear carbed engine. As such, I believe I will be using a 3W60 on mine.

Thanks to all that have provided their input on this matter.

DLU,

You comments regarding a rear carbed engine is precisely why I am chosing ZDZ. Yes, the cowl space is very similar to the Yellow Spitfire.

Thanks for your $.02. It is appreciated as well as everyone else's.

Dorjes,

Will do! There are 3 Yellow P-40's and one Yellow Spitfire being built in my basement this season. As soon as one of us remember to bring the digital camera, I begin a running progress update for those of you interested.

As it is today, our 2nd week into the build, the wing leading edges have been planed and sanded. The flap wells have been lined and the flaps fitted into the wells. We will be working on the ailerons this weekend with end caps and leading edge caps epoxied into place. Yellow retracts should be in next week and the ZDZ80's were ordered yesterday.

We are still waiting on a COMPLETE instruction booklet, plans, and the wing tips however, we're using the Spitfire instructions to keep progressing. We received some updated parts that are to replace some balsa pieces that came with the kit. I guess Yellow found it best to update with a bit more "insurance." Overall, I am pleased with the kit and with Yellow's responses. They do what they say they are going to do and that goes a long way with me.

I'll keep everyone posted and hopefully, have some pictures to share next week.

Regards,
Banks
